Kraftwerk's music had always been completely based in technology, all the while reflecting a healthy fear of global automation. This album met that fear head on, from the plaintive musical theme and lonesome Everyman protagonism of "Computer Love" to the chilling "Home Computer," which foretells the PC revolution via the group's trademark marriage of relentless, melodic electronic music and stark, touching human imagery. Other landmark compositions include the infectious, oft-sampled "Numbers" and "Pocket Calculator," a cut which stands out even on this album as a milestone in quirky, Teutonic synth-pop.

The surprise album from the German electronic pioneer scientists surfaced in 1981, three years after their final monumental "Trans Europe Express" album. In the US, they shifted gears by electing to record for Warner Bros after many years with EMI (where they remained outside the US). "Computer World" was a revelation in that the band's sound was so totally refined and perfected, sounding almost other worldly for the times....and that notion still holds true on listening to it today, as the tracks seem to have a cryogenic quality to them, sound fresh and modern. The flow and sequence of the songs is like an elaborate electronic symphony that is playful, intense, tongue in cheek and ultimately exhilarating.

By the 1980s, the world had at least somewhat caught up with Kraftwerk's chilling musical vision. Synthesizers were everywhere, and the automation of music was developing with alarming speed. As pioneers of the genre, Kraftwerk was hitting its stride as the rest of the pop music world was taking its baby steps. 1981's COMPUTER WORLD serves as an ominous reflection of our evolving technological world, and it's a seminal influence on electronic music to come.

Kraftwerk: Wolfgang Flur, Florian Schneider-Esleben, Karl Bartos, Ralf Hutter (synthesizer).

Q (5/95, p.123) - 5 Stars - Indispensable - "...their best LP to date. A celebration/valediction of information technology, it flickers with hooks..."
Alternative Press (8/01, p.112) - Included in AP's "10 Essential '80s Albums" - "...A concept album...a huge influence on Detroit techno's elite producers..."
Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[With] a sense of everything sound beautifully nocturnal."

5 stars Kraftwerk: TRANSLATION = The Future is Now
Well, actually "Kraftwerk" means Power Plant, but it could mean "The Future is Now". In this case, the future is in the past. Possibly the best Syntechno ever, next to "Electric Cafe"

5 stars Lost in Translation
The German version of this album (ComputerWELT) is much better, at least for what concerns the song "ComputerWORLD" ("ComputerWELT"). Something has been lost in translation: the German song, in facts says something complete ("InterPOL und Deutsche Bank, FBI und Scotland Yard, FinanzAmt und das BKA HABEN UNSERE DATEN DA"), while the English version's words mean... nothing. They are just another sound. They just repeat "FBI and Scotland Yard" without saying that their data are stored in the main worldwide databases!!

After some great releases in the early '80s on Posh Boy Records (collected on CD as The Skinhead Years), the Channel 3 boys tossed their punk roots aside for an ill-fated excursion into beer-soaked roots rock with their "Last Time I Drank..." album in the mid-'80s, then quickly sank without a trace. The band's main men, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Mike Magrann and guitarist/vocalist Kim Gardener return to the scene 20 years later with an album that side-steps their roots rock years and jumps right back into the punk fray. Though not as bitingly raw as their early years (it is 20 years later, after all), Magrann and Gardener do not embarrass themselves with lame re-writes of early glories. Instead, they play it like they ...

Gambit
Matt Darriau's Paradox Trio Gambit CD  (2005)

Computer World CD music
CD $13.05
Gambit moves the feet and touches the heart with its gorgeous melodies and moody, spacious arrangements, ample evidence that Matt Darriau's Paradox Trio are still around and kicking out the Balkan jams first heard on their debut disc a full decade ago. Their old Knitting Factory releases may have all gone out of print by the time the 2000s rolled around, but thanks to the Munich-based Enja label you can still experience the granddaddies of the old downtown Balkan jazz scene during the new millennium, and the recorded evidence suggests that saxophonist/clarinetist Darriau and company are as strong as ever. Darriau (who also plays a mean gaida -- a Balkan goatskin bagpipe) first cajoled Boston's Orange Then Blue big band into exploring Balkan musical forms back in the '80s. He (and others who spilled out of Boston music schools) brought the Balkan vibe south to N.Y.C. in the early '90s and was one of the very first to introduce an East-meets-West tone into the downtown jazz community. Darriau and the other members of his quartet (it's not really a trio) have been busy with many musical projects in addition to Paradox over the years (Darriau himself is probably best known as reedman for the Klezmatics), but they have found time to keep the Paradox flame burning, and music listeners are all the better for it. On 2005's Gambit, Darriau, guitarist Brad Shepik, cellist Rufus Cappadocia, and Macedonian dumbek wonder Seido Salifoski are initially joined by Bulgarian kaval (an end-blown flute) virtuoso Theodosii Spassov, who demonstrates a deep rapport with the Paradox members. The Bulgarian is front and center in the mix and integrated so well into the band on the first four tracks recorded in Sophia during 2002 (Spassov's unison and counterpoint thematic statements and riffs with Darriau's fluid alto and Shepik's precisely articulated guitar on the rousing opener, "Theo's Gambit," set a high bar that is easily matched by his appearances on the next three tracks) that it's hard to imagine he wouldn't be missed on the pieces recorded without him in Hamilton, Ontario, during 2001. Yet the core quartet also acquits itself just fine, thank you, as "Faux 7" and "Free Gaida" -- beautifully atmospheric and filled with Roma soul -- lead into the 12-minute "Cocek i Gong," where a spirited uptempo motif sets the stage for extended fire-breathing guitar and alto solos over a killer vamp that draws not only ...
