Waits's voice isn't the deep, gravelly instrument that would bellow its way through RAIN DOGS, but a smoky, measured one, devoid of artifice. Accordingly, the song structures are simpler, and the best ("Martha," "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You") attain a timeless feel. For all his relative conventionality on this debut, though, Waits is still closer in spirit to the great American songwriters of the '40s than any '70s California rocker. Listeners looking for the eccentric, carnivalesque atmosphere that typifies Waits's work from the '80s and '90s will be surprised by the relative straightforwardness of CLOSING TIME, yet the album announces an important talent.
The 1973 album that introduced a young singer-songwriter to the world at large is a far cry from the wonderfully twisted sonic lanscape that would define SWORDFISHTROMBONES a decade later. The Waits of CLOSING TIME was a barroom balladeer too, but one who fit neatly into the early-'70s folk-rock, singer-songwriter paradigm (CLOSING TIME's opener "Ol' '55," in fact, was covered by the Eagles on their first album). The arrangements here are straightforward, piano-based affairs that present the songs with a minimum of fuss.
Live Recording

amazing album This is a stunning selection of songs and gentle piano playing. A great album to listen to in the early hours of the morning after going out. The chorus on 'Lonely' is so beautiful, wow. Thanks so much. Submitted by sean1983 (London) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wonderful Music! I can't believe the last review noted that Tom Waits did not care for this album very much. I enjoy it a lot. It is by far my favorite of his works. His voice sounds completely different in this CD than in his other works. It is not "scratchy" it is very soft and melancholy. I would describe this Cd as drunken depressing music yet bittersweet...Its wonderful!!! Submitted by Amber (Asheville, NC USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Black Sheep... This is for Tom Waits his black sheep album. He has said in several interviews.Even in his greatest or anthology albums he has never included any songs of this album. For me it's one of the greatest albums in rock or pop history. That's why i think this album have so magic in it,because of Tom's rejection about it.His voice was still soft and after his second and next albums it didn't change as we know the Tom Waits of this days.Anyway you can do one thing...forget about this album or just buy it and know more about Waits history and how great was his evolution. But for me i recommend you to listen songs as Martha,Rosie etc etc..maybe too much Bob Dylan's influence in here or maybe too much genius in it.You decide. Closing Time CD music
$6.49 Though Tom Waits had spent most of the '70s establishing himself as one of America's most distinctive singer-songwriters, SWORDFISHTROMBONES found him reinventing himself and creating one of the most original sounds in popular music. Leaving behind his Kerouac-influenced lyrics and lounge-lizard piano-bar stylings for an unprecedented eclecticism that merged Brecht-Weill artsong, Captain Beefheart-style avant blues, Harry Partch-inspired junkyard percussion, along with a healthy dose of everything else but the kitchen sink.
All this sonic exoticism would be for naught where it not accompanied by equally striking, arch songwriting. SWORDFISHTROMBONES moves ...

Although Exene Cervenka and John Doe's contributions continually stand out, much of X's spark came from ...

| | Bevis Frond London Stone CD (1993) Bonus Tracks
Closing Time album
$10.79 If you were to take any three albums by the Bevis Frond and reshuffle the tracks, you could easily come up with two albums of brilliant material and one album that shouldn't be released. One of those discs would be tough, hard-rocking, and poetic, the other wistfully bleak electric folk. The third release, the one that would never see the light of day, would be derivative psychedelia that shows promise but never quite delivers. The good news is that London Stone would have a lot of selections on the first two albums and only one or two tracks for the third. Among the hard-rocking highlights are the organ-driven "Still Trying" and the incredible "Coming Round," which ranks with the best up-tempo tracks Nick Saloman has ever laid down. It's hard to imagine that both parts of that sinuous, muscular guitar duel were played by the same guy, who is also tossing in the tasty bass work, but that's the genius of Saloman in the studio. "And Now She's Gone" approaches the same level of emotional impact in a more straightforward way, with punk rock intensity and lyrical simplicity carried by Saloman's expressive voice. There are one or two highlights from the sensitive, folk-driven side of the Bevis Frond too, notably "Lord of Nothing" and the unusually empathetic "On a Liquid Wheel." It's hard to figure the exact nature of the title metaphor in this story of a merry has-been, but listeners don't really need to know. What matters is that it's a lively and compassionate character study and a great piece of music, one of several highlights in an album with lots of them to go around. [The record was reissued in 2005 with the addition of six bonus tracks, including the demos for "Coming Round" and "And Now She's Gone."] ~ Richard Foss
