This was Browne's New Wave album, which means you can expect (and get) a lot of tick-tock eighth note rhythms, catchy guitar riffs, and lyrics that are less personal and introverted than usual. There's also more pop, in the Brill Building sense.
The standout is the title tune, hands down the funniest song Browne ever wrote--admittedly, a short list. It's a gleeful skewering of Reagan era Cold War paranoia and yuppie greed, with a killer chorus hook and a neat falsetto break that may or may not be a homage to the Four Seasons. Also noteworthy are the hits "On the Day," "Tender is the Night," and "Downtown," a celebration of winos, bible thumpers and assorted other habitues of the urban jungle that includes a witty quote from Petula Clarke's '60s classic of the same name.

Jackson Browne was one of the leading singer/songwriters of the '70s, and THE PRETENDER, his fourth album, under the supervision of Bruce Springsteen's producer, Jon Landau, remains his definitive '70s record. Part of the cadre of L.A. musicians that included the Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt, Browne stood out as the spokesman for baby boomer angst. This low-key rocker sings in a plaintive tone, concentrating more on lyrics than melody. But his music is complicated and off the beaten-path of standard folk-rock songwriting, sometimes sounding like the soulful Van Morrison, especially on "Your Bright Baby Blues."
The title track is a scornful indictment of middle-class America, while "Linda Paloma," led by a Latin beat and harp, is a dreamy South-Of-The-Border love song. Many tracks are just plain confessional and primal. "Daddy's Tune" ...

The first Jackson Browne album presents a thoughtful, literate artist informed by the street-poet-with-guitar sound of Bob Dylan. Browne takes that approach and refines it with a more formal use of language and a more carefully crafted folk-rock sound characterized by spare, tasteful arrangements. The L.A. studio-rock sound that crept into much of Browne's '70s catalog is at a minimum here. Instead, the album is full of low-key, acoustic-oriented ballads such as the somber "Song For Adam."

Browne's second album is state of the art early '70s L.A. ruminative singer/songwriter stuff, but in retrospect it's nowhere near as slick or mellow as the listener might remember. In fact, the combination of Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pealing steel and David Lindley's smudgy psychedelic lead guitar on songs like "Take It Easy" (all but unrecognizable from the Eagles' pop version) and "Our Lady of the Well" create a sound that eerily anticipates the '90s alt country rock of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog.
Even better, Browne's songwriting, though not quite as consistent as on his debut, is still in top form here. The poignant, often-covered "These Days," the uptempo feel and nudge-nudge humor ...

This is Jackson Browne's most political album. At times, it seems less like a collection of songs than an aural neon sign flashing "I am outraged!" In "The Word Justice," for example, Browne paints a devastating portrait of Oliver North's appearance before Congress, and later devotes a verse to the CIA's alleged drug smuggling activities. Elsewhere, the title tune warns of America's decline while "How Long" rails against defense spending at the expense of hungry children.
