BREAKING THE CHAINS may not be as strong as future Dokken releases such as UNDER LOCK AND KEY and BACK FOR THE ATTACK would be, but it laid down the groundwork for their future success. Don Dokken's operatic vocals and tales of heartbreak, as well as George Lynch's six string heroics, are already on display throughout the album, especially on such highlights as the title track, "Paris Is Burning," and "In the Middle." Bassist Juan Croucier appears on the album, but was replaced by Jeff Pilson shortly after the its release, later resurfacing in Ratt.
L.A. rockers Dokken rose out of the same scene that spawned such '80s pop metal heavyweights as Motley Crue, Ratt, W.A.S.P., and Quiet Riot. The only problem was that when Dokken released their debut, 1983's BREAKING THE CHAINS, it got lost in the shuffle, as all four of the former bands' releases hogged the MTV spotlight and the press.
Live Recording
Dokken: Don Dokken (vocals, guitar); George Lynch (guitar); Juan Croucier (bass, background vocals); Mick Brown (drums).

So so debut. I bought this album on cassette some 20+ years ago after hearing the title track. Unfortunately, the only other songs that are any good are "Live To Rock" and "Paris is Burning". It's amazing that they followed up such a mediocre album with what is still, 22 years later, their best album by far, "Tooth and Nail". Submitted by beermandbt (San Diego) Was This Review Helpful? The Start! This CD is good. It's a must buy. Production? In 1983 is it? Come on, this is great music. Dokken is great. Submitted by jamesm333 (Yelm, Wa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
WARNING! Every music professional should read As the first American to hear these tracks, it's disappointing to tell you that this album easily could have rated 4+ stars. I hate to pan albums unless I feel a very familiar artist has really let me down; I'd never heard of Don Dokken before I met him....and I'm going to do it anyway.
After laying down the basic tracks (and hanging out with Klaus Meine & other Scorpions), Don flew from Germany to L.A. with the original "bobby" - a sort of open-faced tape reel used in Europe. Riffling the yellow pages to find a late-night studio, he drove from the airport to Pax Productions - a rehearsal/recording biz owned by my band Ocean. I spent 6 hours mixing down more than 24 tracks to 4, then mastered the product to stereo so that Don could listen to it in his car & elsewhere. That mix is how I remember the songs sounding....great! Typically lush Dokken vocals with driving rhythms and crisp, slightly edgy guitar tracks. My copy even found its way into my rotation of favorite albums for a time.
When "Breaking the Chains" was finally released I was, frankly, shocked. Gone was Juan along with his change-of-pace lead vocals & lyrics on "We're Illegal". The hasty-seeming rewrite yielded the vapid and sparkless "Live to Rock". Gone was even a hint of hard-rock sincerity to any of Don's lead vocals. Gone, too, was the brightness demanded by George Lynch's masterful subtleties - he might as well have cut off his "B" & "E" strings! The best song, "Paris is Burning", has lost its counterpoint instrumental hook.....George plays a descending arpeggio leading into the chorus. On the smothered top two strings.
In the final analysis, there is one area where this album could shine: As an object lesson to all in the recording industry; a warning against overproducing and obsessively overpolishing the raw material presented by the musicians - who've shed bucketsful of blood, sweat & tears already. Quiet Riot Dokken? They may have looked like Quiet Riot on this, their first effort but they sure didn't sound like them. This is a very good first release from a band that always had an orginal sound that still continues today. Some really solid songs here including the title track and Paris is burning. | | Scorpions Fly To The Rainbow CD (1974) (Import) Germany
Breaking The Chains music CDs
$9.89 This is the Germany import edition of FLY TO THE RAINBOW by hard rockers the Scorpions, featuring lead guitarist Uli Jon Roth.
On their second effort, Fly to the Rainbow, the Scorpions begin to establish their trademark hard-rock sound while exorcising the last of their remaining psychedelic hippie tendencies. In fact, the band bursts out of the gate in surprisingly straightforward fashion with the hard rocking "Speedy's Coming" before resorting to the aforementioned bad habits on otherwise promising tracks such as "Fly People Fly" and "They Need a Million"; the first never really gets off the ground, seeming almost like a prelude to the title track, and the second is let down by the weak vocals of guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Uli Jon Roth, who have no business competing against vocalist Klaus Meine. Roth insists, however, on taking center stage for "Drifting Sun," which exposes his shameless Hendrix-isms, down to the opening riff lifted straight out of "Spanish Castle Magic." And while it closes the album in rather schizophrenic fashion, the epic nine-minute title track would become a concert ...
| | Amon Amarth Crusher CD (2001)
Breaking The Chains songs
$9.69 After nearly a decade of recording and a few lineup overhauls, each contributor to Amon Amarth's previous effort, Avenger, stuck around for The Crusher. Original members Johan Hegg (vocals) and Olavi Mikkonen (guitars) are again joined by Fredrik Andersson on drums, Johan Söderberg on guitar, and bassist Ted Lundström. There is nothing new on this outing to surprise fans of this band's familiar Scandinavian death metal. The riffing from guitar and drums is workmanlike, and Hegg's vocal rants carry all the requisite ferocity. During slower, more musically focused numbers like "As Long as the Raven Flies" and the opener, "Bastards of a Lying Breed," certain attributes of '80s thrash and song-driven ...
