By 1984, Steps Ahead's personnel had stabilized with original keyboardist Warren Bernhardt rejoining the group and teaming up with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Peter Erskine, and vibraphonist Mike Mainieri; guitarist Chuck Loeb guests on one selection, as does Tony Levin, who is heard on the Chapman stick. This outing is very electronic and does not quite reach the heights of Steps Ahead's earlier Elektra album, but it certainly has plenty of spirit and power. ~ Scott Yanow

Modern Times album
$12.65 TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group and "Outrance" was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
Tenor saxophone master Michael Brecker has shared the stage and studio with most every major drummer in modern music at one time or another. It was three very special stick-slingers, however, that Brecker chose to feature on TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE: the fiery Jeff "Tain" Watts, the inventive Bill Stewart, and the incomparable powerhouse Elvin Jones. Along with Brecker's muscular wail, guitar legend Pat Metheny and organ wizard Larry Goldings offer some stunning musical vehicles for these three outstanding percussionists.
It is Brecker's signature tenor tone and bravado that prominently conducts the proceedings and he is in fine form sparring with Jones on the waltzing opener "Arc of the Pendulum," complete with Elvin's signature loping gallop. Watts gives a commanding performance on the quirky "Dr. Slate" that offers some of the most rhythmically intricate ensemble work on the disc. Stewart is his usual amazing self on such tracks as the funky "Half Past Late" and "Renaissance ...
| | Steps Ahead Live In Tokyo 1986 CD (1986)
Modern Times CD music
$13.79 This Steps Ahead concert (which has long been available on laser disc) has both good and bad points. Michael Brecker's virtuosic tenor solos show a great deal of passion and creativity within the genre. Also Mike Maineri's vibes are an attractive part of the ensemble sound, making the R&B-ish unit sound like Spyro Gyra with guts. Unfortunately the rhythm section (which consists of guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Steve Smith) is never subtle, the rhythms are bombastic and the electronics (including at one point a drum machine) are excessive. The solos might be fiery but the unimaginative backup makes this potentially super band often sound run of the mill and monotonous. There are much better Steps Ahead concerts to preserve than this one. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Steps Ahead Smokin' In The Pit CDs (1982)
Modern Times songs
$22.25 Recorded live at The Pitt-Inn, Tokyo, Japan on December 15 & 16, 1979. Includes liner notes by Mike Mainieri.
Digitally remastered by Todd Gerard (Gerard Sound Lab, New York, New York).
On this stunning two-disc set, the original lineup of Mike Mainieri's legendary fusion band Steps Ahead--then known as just Steps--performs to an enthusiastic crowd at the Pitt-Inn in Tokyo in December, 1979. Fresh from an extended run at the Brecker Brother's Seventh Avenue South club in New York, Mainieri, Michael Brecker, Eddie Gomez, Don Grolnick, and Steve Gadd tear up the stage with powerful grooves, blistering solos, and magnificent interaction. One listen to the dazzling power that this group conjured in performance and there is no doubt that it constituted the cream of the crop of electric jazz in its heyday.
Brecker and Gadd shine brilliantly on tracks like the opening "Tee Bag" and Grolnick's furious samba "Fawlty Tenors," the latter featuring Gadd in an explosive cadenza. Grolnick is his usual tasteful self on his own swinger "Uncle Bob" and the beautiful solo "Momento." Mainieri gets his feature with the classic "Lover Man," taken here with a caressing glide. Other familiar tunes include Joe Zawinul's intricate "Young and Fine," the sultry ballad "Soul Eyes," and the ...

| | Franklin Kiermyer Tauhid CD (1966)
Modern Times music CDs
$12.39 Judging from his work on the later Coltrane LPs, one might not have predicted that Pharoah Sanders would produce such an accessible free jazz album his very first time out on Impulse Records. (His post-Ayler squawking and squealing detracted from the magnificence of albums like LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD AGAIN and MEDITATIONS.) Happily, Pharoah seems to have conceived the beautifully realized TAUHID as a less frenetic meditation of his own. World music grounded him in a way it didn't even Coltrane, who typically used Indian and African motifs as spurs to his awesome late-stage improvisations. Actually, Pharoah and company (pianst Dave Burrell, ...
| | Babkas Fratelli CD (1996) (Import) Reissued; Canada
Modern Times songs
$11.49 Babkas is an provocative trio of Downtown New York improvisor/composers -- alto saxophonist Briggan Krauss, guitarist Brad Schoeppach, and drummer Aaron Alexander. Their work draws on all manner of modernist musical resources, from rock, funk, and jazz, to contemporary classical. The resulting composite is rather greater than the sum of the parts, for Babkas has developed a pleasantly unconventional blend of the composed and improvised. The written melodies are most irregular, as are the structures they blow over -- there's a nice coherence to their sound that comes from regulating, ...
