(3 Customer Reviews)
After honing his salsa chops in the 1970s in lengthy stints with the bands of Ray Barretto and Willie Colon, Panamanian Ruben Blades formed his own band, Seis del Solar. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Seis del Solar's first album, introduces Blades's unique fusion of salsa, rock, and Caribbean rhythms, and the full range of Blades' literate, witty lyrics and expressive vocal flair. Though the politically pointed angle of Blades's words will be lost on those with a language barrier (Blades sings only in his native Spanish), the inventive, accessible nature of his music should appeal to many.
Blades concocts a musical stew that includes Latin jazz ("Todos Vuelven"), reggae ("Desapariciones"), African folk ("Caminos Verdes"), and art music (the pell-mell narrative of "G.D.B.D."). The opening cut, "Decisiones," kicks off with a retro-'50s doo-wop intro before segueing into high-octane salsa. Remarkably, Blades pulls off his synthesis of styles with aplomb, remaining true to his Latin roots even while pushing and expanding his musical vision. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Blades's first fully developed personal statement, is the opening salvo in the formidable, diverse discography of this multi-talented musician.
Principally recorded at Eurosound Studios, New York, New York between May and August 1983.

Buscando America
$5.59 After an exploration away from the mainstream of salsa that would last nearly ten years, beginning with the release of 1984's Buscando América, Rubén Blades fans who missed the coro-shouting, compana-banging fun of his Fania years will rejoice in Caminando. Though a contemporary release, with plenty of contemporary influence, Blades' playlist on this record is much more salsa than fusion. From the rollicking, joyful title cut, to the slinky, trombone-driven Colón-esque "Prohibido Olvidar," the Rubén Blades made famous in the dancehalls is back, if but for a short time. The production on Caminando is unique to other Blades productions. The ...

$5.59 All lyrics printed in Spanish and English except "Baby's In Black" (English only).
As Ruben Blades' last album with Son Del Solar, AMOR Y CONTROL makes for a tasty end to an era with 12 poignant cuts of exceptional songwriting and stylistic variety. With loads of heart and conscience, the Panamanian singer/songwriter further explores myths of America through the names, faces and lives of its citizens. Indeed, while the melodies and rhythms here are satisfying on their own, Ruben's lyrics are the cornerstone of his music and thankfully are included in the package ...

| | Laura Pausini From The Inside CD (2002)
Buscando America
$9.65 Italian pop star Laura Pausini's first English LP, From the Inside, is a guilty pleasure for any closeted fan of easy-listening pop (Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, Backstreet Boys). The album kicks off with the glorious "I Need Love," a song that earned her U.S. exposure when the ABC daytime drama All My Children used it as a love theme. Other highlights include "Every Day Is a Monday," a Europop mainstream song laced with a wah-wah guitar, and the Dion-like "Without You." Pausini is clearly influenced by Dion. Her voice doesn't soar to the heights that Dion reaches, but she comes close in songs such as "If That's Love" and "Every Day Is a Monday." Like most albums filled with love songs, "surrender" is a theme throughout From the Inside, especially in the funky ballad "Do I Dare" and the Europop "Surrender." This is one album to surrender to. ~ Christina Fuoco
