Personnel includes: Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Bob Mann (guitar); David Frisina (violin); Tommy Morgan (harmonica); Plas Johnson (tenor saxophone); Oscar Brashear, Tony Terran (trumpet); Chauncey Welsch (trombone); Don Grolnick (piano); Bob Mangnussen (bass); Louis Bellson, John Guerin (drums). Recorded at The Complex, Los Angeles between August 24 and October 5, 1984. What's New illustrated that Linda Ronstadt was no longer interested in contemporary pop, and since it was a surprise success, there was no reason not to repeat the formula on Lush Life. Working again with Nelson Riddle, Ronstadt runs through several pop standards -- "When I Fall in Love," "Sophisticated Lady," "Falling in Love Again," "It Never Entered My Mind" -- which are given lush, even syrupy, arrangements. Ronstadt's voice isn't entirely suited to this material, but she sings it professionally, and Lush Life is just as effective as What's New, which means it's fine, but not as good as the real thing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine What's New illustrated that Linda Ronstadt was no longer interested in contemporary pop, and since it was a surprise success, there was no reason not to repeat the formula on Lush Life. Ronstadt sings the material professionally, and Lush Life is just as effective as What's New. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine LUSH LIFE is one out of the three Ronstadt forays into the world of jazz standards and WWII-era pop numbers. Like its companions WHAT'S NEW and FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS, it captures the multi-faceted soprano buoyed by Nelson Riddle's big band stylings. Riddle, the former Frank Sinatra arranger, employs such luminaries as Louie Bellson, Peter Asher and Don Grolnick to aid Ronstadt along the journey. Ronstadt's interpretations range from the delightful and playful to sassy and romantic. At times the orchestration can get a little too sweet, but Ronstadt sings such faves as "When I Fall In Love," "Skylark," "Sophisticated Lady," "Falling In Love Again," "Lush Life" and "You Took Advantage Of Me" with enough charm and grace to overshadow some of Riddle's overly ambitious arrangements.

Lush Life
$10.45 Live Recording
Personnel: Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); George Wadenius (guitar); Lou Marini (alto saxophone, flute); Cornelius Bumpus, Illinois Elohainu (tenor saxophone); Lawrence Feldman, Dave Tofani (tenor saxophone, flute); Ronnie Cuber, Roger Rosenberg (baritone saxophone); Alan Rubin (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jim Pugh, Birch Johnson (trombone); Paul Griffin (Hammond B-3 organ); Walter Becker (bass, guitar); Leroy Clouden (drums, percussion); Christopher Parker, Dennis McDermott (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion). Recorded at River Sound, Clinton Recording and The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Hyperbolic Sound, Hawaii. KAMAKIRIAD was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. Donald Fagen's second solo album is a song cycle of sorts, following the adventures of an imaginary protagonist as he travels the world in his car, a brand-new Kamakiri. It is an odd concept, and one that is not obvious to the listener, but reflection upon Fagen's liner notes while listening to the album does tend to evoke a vision of a non-apocalyptic near future, where swingers sip cocktails and fresh vegetable juices as they groove to synthesized jazz-rock. Evocative or not, this is not Fagen's best effort. The songs on Kamakiriad are mainly static one-chord vamps, with little of the interesting off-beat hits or chord changes that characterized most of Steely Dan's corpus (although, it must be said, Two Against Nature isn't too far conceptually from what Fagen is doing here). There is a slightly antiseptic feeling to Kamakiriad. Although the drum tracks are not synthesized, they sure sound that way, and even the horns sound electronic at times, a far cry from the lush arrangements of Aja. Another shortcoming of this record is the fact that the verse melodies don't sound very developed. The choruses are as catchy and cryptic as you would expect from Donald Fagen, but the verses are less than memorable. Walter Becker, who produced the record, as well as contributing bass and guitar, also co-wrote "Snowbound." Perhaps ...
