Highlights include "Marian (Version)" and "Some Kind of Stranger"; on the first, Andrew Eldritch's vocals (about half of which are in German) are felt rather than heard, an effect accentuated by crystalline guitar notes. The latter song is arguably the most spectacularly gloomy song that the goth movement ever produced--nearly seven and a half minutes of soaring keyboards, morose, tortured vocals, and aching, brittle guitars. Fans might wish to note the album's 1992 remastering cleans up the sound quality significantly, but whichever version you hear, this album is an extraordinary document.
The Sisters Of Mercy's debut, 1985's FIRST AND LAST AND ALWAYS, is the definitive goth record. Combining the filtered punk-inspired angst and fury of Bauhaus, a machine-honed brittleness, and the literate dourness of artists like Leonard Cohen (whose songs are referenced in both the Sisters' lyrics and by their name), it's an amazingly solid album.
Live Recording

Q (p.159) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "FIRST AND LAST AND ALWAYS helped crystallise goth and remains the purist's album choice." Q (12/99, p.171) - Included in Q Magazine's 'Best Gothic Albums Of All Time' - "...their tombstone....This mordant beast survives as a mission statement...for the genre: pitch-black, rock-hard, utterly oppressive, shrouded in bollocks. NOT AT ALL LIKE THE ORIGINAL VINYL this, my friends, WAS a great recording from a great band. that is until eldritch f'd it up by remixing it for the cd! this is the best sisters album, but i own the original vinyl, and it sounds COMPLETELY different (read "superior")!! the guitars WERE clearer, the mix was put together better, and things weren't added to supposedly make it better. trust me, if there is a way to get the vinyl version, GET IT INSTEAD! even with some vinyl "crackles", it is far superior. andrew eldritch, like dave mustaine, or george lucas, should leave the original art intact, thereby continuing the enjoyment of those who know and love that original work of art! there really should be some sort of law or something to stop even the artists who created their works, from altering them in any way. unless the fans get a choice between the original or the artist's so called improvement, just being basically forced to listen to an inferior version is a travesty, in the most complete definition of the word. lose the egos, you artists out there, and listen to your fans! don't tamper with your art, because it is also our art to enjoy, and without your fans, you are nothing but a self indulgent hack. Epic! The Sisters released several standard setting EPs in the early '80s. Body and Soul was a masterpiece in itself. It sounds like it was recorded in a Gothic cathedral. The title track echoes of dark, damp night. But the real gem of that album is the last track on the B side, Afterhours. The rest of the Sisters' EPs were almost as good. Two artful tracks are Blood Money and Bury me Deep. Also, may I recommend "Emma", although I have only heard it on a bootleg I bought in London in 1985. But it was with the LP, First and Last and Always, that the Sisters drew the Gothic world map. Submitted by Sven (Saratoga Springs, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Meet the unparalleled and passionate "Sisters of Mercy" This album takes you on a tour to the dark side of the planet and back again. Most delightful when you're feeling depressed, the broken-hearted vocals and powerful play of instruments are moving in all moods. Especially German speakers might like the song 'Marian' where Andrew Eldritch switches to singing German with a rough accent for a few lines. While the songs from this album peter out all to soon, the echo of the music in your head and the wanderlust for black planets and flood-lands remain.
