Personnel includes: Anita Baker (vocals); Greg Phillingaines (keyboards); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Though Anita Baker got some airplay out of The Songstress, that promising solo debut didn't bring her financial security. In fact, Baker was earning her living as a legal secretary in her native Detroit when she signed with Elektra in the mid-'80s. Elektra gave her a strong promotional push, and the equally superb Rapture became the megahit that The Songstress should have been. To its credit, Elektra made her a major star by focusing on Baker's strong point -- romantic but gospel-influenced R&B/pop ballads and "slow jams," sometimes with jazz overtones -- and letting her be true to herself. Rapture gave Baker one moving hit after another, including "Sweet Love," "Caught up in the Rapture," "Same Ole Love," and "No One in This World." Praising Baker in a 1986 interview, veteran R&B critic Steve Ivory asserted, "To me, singers like Anita Baker and Frankie Beverly define what R&B or soul music is all about." Indeed, Rapture's tremendous success made it clear that there was still a sizeable market for adult-oriented, more traditional R&B singing. ~ Alex Henderson From the opening piano chords of `Sweet Love', you know there is a good song coming. Ex-Chapter 8 vocalist Baker has an effortless delivery that swoops and dips like a swallow. `Sweet Love' is just one of those soul songs that people who say they don't like soul music like. The choice of material is superb, and heart-tugging songs such as David Lasley's `You Bring Me Joy' or Ken Hirsch and Marti Sharron's `No One In The World' are only beaten by Baker's voice. The slower material is stronger and only `Watch Your Step' and `Same Ole Love' fail to hit the spot, simply because of the mood the other tracks set.

Absolutly stunning wonderful music wonderful songs wonderful soul. Anita Baker hit big with this cd after departing with her band of Chapter 8. She's obviously much better as a solo act. I love every song on this album, except "Watch Your Step." But everything else is stunning! Submitted by a reviewer (Columbus, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Impeccable! This is the R&B "songstress" in what is arguably her greatest recording ever. This is the one that put Anita Baker on the map. The only song that isn't perfection here is the very last one. Other than that this is play-through affair. Her delivery and heart felt lyrics are just as timeless now as they were back in 1986. This is easily one of the greatest albums of all time from any artist and any type of music. A true landmark and must have to and R&B aficionado.

Her Best! Only Baker CD that made my personal top 100 from a large CD collection. Next time you go to the beach, listen to this one while relaxing and looking at the ocean. Bet you will understand what I mean. What a soothing CD! If Baker ever comes back into music, as long as she attempts to duplicate the effect of "Rapture", she may fall short but will still be sucuccessful. Trends in African-American music changed considerably between Anita Baker's first taste of national exposure in 1979 (when she was a member of Detroit soul band Chapter 8 and sang lead on the hit ballad "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl") and her debut solo album, The Songstress, in 1983. While 1979's black music charts were full of large ...

| | Lumbee Overdose: Album & Game CD (1970)
Rapture
$11.59 The original LP of OVERDOSE came with a board game insert, complete with play money and detailed instructions that started with the perquisite "No one who intends to stay straight may play." Players were to set up dealerships in locales such as Berkeley, California and Greenwich Village, New York City with the threat of narcs everywhere present. Lumbee wasn't, as the opening song on Overdose suggests, tone deaf, but their music wasn't particularly tuneful either, meaning there isn't really anything on this straight CD reissue that you can live without. Even hardcore fans of '70s hard rock will find the songwriting largely undistinguished and the recording surprisingly lacking in excitement. The band seems unable to muster up a high level of energy, and as a result, the songs have a tendency to sink into plodding, Southern blues-by-the-numbers rock. Despite the dynamic multicultural makeup of the band, the music doesn't manage any sort of unique angle or edge, which is a genuine disappointment. The album does have its merits. Lumbee erupts into a sizzling but far-too-brief jazzy break toward the end ...
