Much like the English punk movement before it, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal invaded hundreds of American garages in the early '80s and launched countless bands across the nation. It is interesting to note, however, that while in major cities with thriving punk rock this phenomenon manifested itself in the form of thrash metal (for example, L.A.'s Metallica, New York's Anthrax), in secondary capitals, up-and-coming bands generally boasted a more mainstream metal approach. Such was the case with Phoenix's Armored Saint, Connecticut's Fates Warning, and Seattle's Queensryche, but Metal Church (also from Seattle) seemed determined to cover both angles on their powerful 1985 debut. But while the complex songwriting and aggressive riffing seen on trad metal epics like "Beyond the Black," "Gods of Wrath," and "Metal Church" are about as good as it gets, thrashier moments like "My Favorite Nightmare," "Battalions," and the appropriately named instrumental "Merciless Onslaught" still needed a little work. In fact, the band's incredibly tight musicianship is a highlight all on its own, and vocalist David Wayne's piercing screech (similar to Accept's Udo Dirkschneider) was considered very hip at the time, believe it or not. Concluding with a full-throttle cover of the Deep Purple standard "Highway Star," this album remains an overlooked classic of straight-ahead American-bred heavy metal. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Metal Church Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews METAL CHURCH RULES!!!!! NWOBHM is great isn't it? This cd is very good. I was always curious about them and bought this to get a tatse. Well i was not surprised by the level of quality on this record because i like most of the NWOBHM stuff. Crunchy guitars, great riffs and different vocals. Like King Diamond Meets Bruce Dickinson. Metal Church
$5.29 San Francisco's precocious Death Angel finally reached musical adulthood (though some band members were still barely old enough to vote) with 1990's Act III. | | Metal Church Dark CD (1987)
Metal Church
$7.69 Metal Church's excellent debut had impressed critics and fans alike with its ferocious blend of classic metal and thrash. But by the time they released its follow-up, 1986's The Dark, the band seemed to be struggling with their direction and wrestling with internal problems. The fact that they were collectively one of the most unattractive bands ever (even by heavy metal standards) didn't help matters either, especially in image-conscious America, so it was no surprise when the band's appeal remained firmly confined to the metal underground. Which is too bad, since The Dark contained some of the group's best material, including the brutal intensity of "Start the Fire" and "Method to Your Madness," as well as what was probably their best-known song, the astoundingly heavy epic "Watch the Children Play." Extensive touring with Elektra labelmates Metallica had also motivated the band to develop their thrashier inclinations, resulting in vicious moshers like "Ton of Bricks" and "Over My Dead Body." ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Metal Church's excellent debut had impressed critics and fans alike with its ferocious blend of classic metal and thrash. | | Wylie & The Wild West Paradise CD (2001)
Metal Church
$14.55 Wylie & The Wild West: Wylie Gustafson (vocals, guitar); Ray Dole (vocals, guitar, baritone guitar); Mark Thompson (electric guitar, gut string guitar); Hoot Hester (guitar, mandolin, fiddle);Duane Becker (steel guitar, dobro); Jeff Taylor (accordion); Dennis Crouch (acoustic bass); John McTigue (percussion). Recorded at The Ol' Bunkhouse Studios, Madison, Tennesse. Includes liner notes by Waddie Mitchelle. Paradise doesn't quite match the high-standard set Ridin' the Hi-Line, but it's hard to deny that Wylie and company have turned out another excellent album. Gone are the joyous whooping clarinets, and although one misses their energy, there are many fine moments here, especially Wylie's adaptation of an old Badger Clark cowboy poem, which he sets to music for the lovely "To Her." Other highlights include Dylan's "Girl From the North Country," the Latin shuffle of Hank Snow's "The Gal Who Invented Kissin'," and a return to country-rock for "Hooked on Honky Tonk" and "Yodel Boogie." Elsewhere, though, the album is reminiscent of Total Yodel! in its simplicity and lulling melodies. There is enough ...

Metal Church
$7.99 Tim's material is reminiscent of other guitar-playing singer/songwriters such as Dave Mathews, Josh Pyke, Ben Lee, James Taylor, and John Mayer.A burning desire…For Tim it has always been about a passion for music and the audience. As he will tell you “I want reach as many people as I can who can be moved by my music.†As long as Tim can remember, the dream of music spoke to him from deep within; he never imagined pursuing anything else.Tim is a prolific songwriter as well as an accomplished guitar player… When Tim was 14 he worked many odd jobs to save up for his first guitar. Over the next few years he spent countless hours teaching himself Blues, Rock, Classical & Heavy Metal styles. Whilst in High School he began playing lead guitar in award-winning stage and rock bands as well as composing his own material. After high school he began his career as a professional guitarist, becoming very sought after in the northern NSW area. That road eventually landed him in Brisbane in the late 90’s where he scored some great jobs playing guitar for more established acts; impressing punters and work colleagues alike in roles ranging from lead guitarist in hard rock bands to guitarist/backing vocalist in acoustic duos. But his true path…Tim was always a songwriter at heart. With a strong passion for songwriting, he keenly presented his songs to his colleagues. Going from band to band, he continued to find himself in frustrating situations with band members not being interested in performing his music. But something was telling him to go solo...Tim wanted his performing career to have more personal expression; so in 2002 Tim swallowed his fears and left his role as a guitarist for a solo career as a singer/songwriter. He hit the Brisbane club & pub circuit playing sets of his original music and selling CDs he had recorded himself on his digital 8 track recorder. The level of connection with an audience in this new role was exactly what Tim was searching for. He then recorded his first Ep, which was well received in the Brisbane area, selling over 100 copies privately. Getting to perform his original material was by far the most enjoyable experience of his career. Tim loves nothing more than writing songs, recording them and sharing them with people: giving the gift of music.Taking a break…Wanting to increase his skill base and independence, in 2003 Tim took a break from live playing to study for a Diploma in Contemporary Music, gaining valuable knowledge and skills in music business and performance. He then went on to study sound engineering. After that he strengthened his voice with professional vocal training through Peter Vox from Vox Singing School. Tim was grateful to work with such an accomplished teacher who had helped with the vocal successes of acts such as Jet, Pseudo Echo, Invertigo and Rob Mills.Tim now had all the tools to take the next step and after putting together his own studio at home completed his first album "Seeing in the Dark" in early 2007. Tim was very exited of the idea of having to finally have an ‘album’ to his credit. He got a website happening and began promoting his music over the internet.Tim decided that Melbourne was more his scene as it had many more venues and opportunities for solo artists. So Tim packed up again and moved down to Melbourne.Back on stage…To enhance Tim’s stage presence even ...
