2003 Elektra reissue of 1983 album, cerified 3x Platinum.
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Originally released on Megaforce. The true birth of thrash. On Kill 'Em All, Metallica fuses the intricate riffing of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Diamond Head with the velocity of Motörhead and hardcore punk. James Hetfield's highly technical rhythm guitar style drives most of the album, setting new standards of power, precision, and stamina. But really, the rest of the band is just as dexterous, playing with tightly controlled fury even at the most ridiculously fast tempos. There are already several extended, multi-sectioned compositions foreshadowing the band's later progressive epics, though these are driven by adrenaline, not texture. A few tributes to heavy metal itself are a bit dated lyrically; like Diamond Head, the band's biggest influence, Kill 'Em All's most effective tone is one of supernatural malevolence -- as pure sound, the record is already straight from the pits of hell. Ex-member Dave Mustaine co-wrote four of the original ten tracks, but the material all sounds of a piece. And actually, anyone who worked backward through the band's catalog might not fully appreciate the impact of Kill 'Em All when it first appeared -- unlike later releases, there simply isn't much musical variation (apart from a lyrical bass solo from Cliff Burton). The band's musical ambition also grew rapidly, so today, Kill 'Em All sounds more like the foundation for greater things to come. But that doesn't take anything away from how fresh it sounded upon first release, and time hasn't dulled the giddy rush of excitement in these performances. Frightening, awe-inspiring, and absolutely relentless, Kill 'Em All is pure destructive power, executed with jaw-dropping levels of scientific precision. [An Elektra reissue added the cover songs "Blitzkrieg" and "Am I Evil?" from the European Creeping Death EP, which were later deleted and included on Garage, Inc.] ~ Steve Huey Occasionally one album can be pinpointed as the turning point in a musical genre. KILL 'EM ALL is one such album and, boy, did the heavy metal genre need a transfusion of new blood. Herein trad metal was stripped of its late-70s pomposity and reduced to its base element of brutal sonic force. The rhythm section of Burton and Ulrich do a masterful job, as does rhythm guitar ace and vocalist James Hetfield, on a set that owes a debt to punk as much as to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The phantasmagorical allusions are still there in the lyrics, as are some long-winded guitar solos, but otherwise KILL 'EM ALL promised a creative rebirth for hard rock.
Rolling Stone (11/89) - Ranked #35 in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Albums of the '80s" survey. Q (Summer/01, p.127) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Reaffirms their status as the pre-eminent metal band of the modern era....combining the power of classic rock with the raw speed and DIY attitude of punk. Thrash metal had arrived..." Metallica Kill'Em All Songs Kill'Em All Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great as always! This CD is awesome, like what's new, but I do have to say that back in the day, '83, this was to be one of the fastest bands around? Ouch to today's speed standards! I'm bummed since the Metallica black album, have not bought a thing! Too bad the mixing quality of Mr & Mrs. Z couldn't have been beeter in '83. Still a classic and powerful headbnaging material. Must buy. LASTLY, majorly bummed out that AMI Evil and Blitzkrieg is on this like the cassette. These guys should have remastered it too! Submitted by lricard (Detroit Mi) Was This Review Helpful? True Metal In a world where mousing your hair and playing ridiculous slow crap reigns supreme, there arose a champion to lead the metalheads into battle against the realms of hair, METALLICA.
This album is metal in its truest form, and is the most essential album for anyone who wants to break the mold. Metallica grabs there chance to fight with all they've got and obliterate anything in their path. with tracks like motorbreath and hit the lights they show their power. No Remorse really shows off the instrumental skill of Hammet. and The Four Horsemen is just a really great song. Bassist Cliff Burton shows his metal in an extreme bass solo in Anesthesia pulling teeth. and of course you got Ulrich who is a master with drums and making his drums sound like a machine gun. all in all must have. THIS IS WHAT MADE ME LIKE METALLICA! The first Metallica cd I had was the Black album and I was like "This is good but..." then I heard this and I thought "This is much better!" I know it's Metallica's best but I would put Slayer's "South of Heaven" and Pantera's "Cowboys from Hell" before it. It's close though, don't get me wrong. Rock On! The begining of "metal" This was a revolution of it's day. With this one album everything changed in the hard music world. This new band MetallicA, gave everyone a good taste of what real music should be. In my opinion amazing. Submitted by jr1451006 (Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome Debut Kirk Hammett's influence in this album is not really apparent, but it is the most thrashing and extreme metallica album to be released.
As is obvious from the title, the lyrics are violent and the riffs relentless. While not consistent throughout like their later albums, I consider this the most fun metallica album to listen to aside from black. The only thing left to be desired is in the recordings of the vocals (if you have heard ride the lightning, and not this, it's similar).
PS - there's nothing to whine about between Metallica & Megadeth, they are both awesome bands and Mustaine did help write some of these songs. Get over it! Submitted by Curtis (OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Kill'Em All
$13.95 Live in Poland was recorded in 1978 and just now remastered for cd. It's some of Jack's best playing in concert. The concert hall was in Pozan, in central Poland and it was during the cold war. The tension in the atmosphere must have inspired Jack to attain supreme hights of fancy, uninhibited playing, and improvisatory ecstasy! This cd must be listened to, to believe, the opening work was totally improvised on the spot. It set the tone for all that follows. These are the words of Jack Reilly, composer, jazz pianist and author. As a composer, Mr. Reilly has achieved a remarkable synthesis of traditional classical music with jazz. His compositions and performances reflect his solid musicianship, intelligence and sophistication.Acclaimed for his solo jazz concerts in the United States and in Europe, where he has performed in France, Italy, Poland, Ireland, London, Wales and Norway, Jack Reilly is a vibrant exhilarating performer. The enthusiastic response to Mr. Reilly's European tour with George Russell's New York Band and his subsequent performance with the band at the Village Vanguard in New York City; his concert at Jordan Hall in Boston with the ...
