The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar); Lol Tolhurst (various instruments); Porl Thompson (guitar); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Roger O'Donnell (keyboards); Boris Williams (drums).
Recorded at Outside Studios, Berkshire, England.
Expanding the latent arena rock sensibilities that peppered Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by slowing them down and stretching them to the breaking point, the Cure reached the peak of their popularity with the crawling, darkly seductive Disintegration. It's a hypnotic, mesmerizing record, comprised almost entirely of epics like the soaring, icy "Pictures of You." The handful of pop songs, like the concise and utterly charming "Love Song," don't alleviate the doom-laden atmosphere. The Cure's gloomy soundscapes have rarely sounded so alluring, however, and the songs -- from the pulsating, ominous "Fascination Street" to the eerie, string-laced "Lullaby" -- have rarely been so well-constructed and memorable. It's fitting that Disintegration was their commercial breakthrough, since, in many ways, the album is the culmination of all the musical directions the Cure were pursuing over the course of the '80s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Dark, dreamlike and magical, Disintegration surely represents one of the Cure's finest hours. Although retaining the darkest elements of the earlier albums, it pointed the way towards the band's later, more commercial work on Wish. The intoxicating music draws the listener inexorably downwards, but somehow one remains buoyant - rarely since this album has Robert Smith surpassed the beauty and yearning of 'Pictures Of You', or the poignant pop of 'Love Song'. The nightmarish 'Lullaby', however, increases the pressure, and by the final tracks, all hope quite literally disintegrates. A unique and emotionally raw album, Disintegration evokes the sensation of inevitable, but desirable, death by drowning.CMJ (1/6/03, p.15) - Included in CMJ's list of "Top 25 College Radio Albums of All Time"

5 stars Absolutely breathtaking
This was my first Cure album, and got me hooked right from the beginning of Plainsong. Every song is beautiful in its own dark way and once you start listening to it youll do so over and over. An essential for anyone.

5 stars Robert Smith is a genius
"Disintigration" isn't an album you and your phat beat pundin buddies are going to play as you cruise the barrio in your pimped out Volkswagon. This album is a beautiful masterpeice, and couldn't start better than "Plainsong," which evokes images of a gray landscape and freezing rain and moves on to excellent peices like Lullaby. Seriously, if you're feeling depressed and optimistic at the same time, this album is for you. Excellent guitars, excellent synths, excellent lyrics. The boys from South Park agree: Robert Smith rocks.

Cure Mixed Up CD  (1990)

Disintegration
CD $9.09  4.6 stars Audio Samples
Remixes of previously released material plus 1 new song.
The Cure includes: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar); Porl Thompson (guitar, keyboards); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Lol Tolhurst (keyboards, drums).
Producers: Robert Smith, David M. Allen, Chris Parry, Mark Saunders.
An assortment of remixes, re-recordings, old singles, and one new song ("Never Enough"). Most of the remixes are quite radical, leaving only the bare bones of the original song. There are enough oddities and rare tracks on Mixed Up to make it necessary for Cure fans, but it's too specialized for casual listeners. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Who says The Cure don't have a sense of humor? While The Cure had often struggled with the dichotomy between dancing and moping in an attempt to prove that the two were not incompatible, critics simply smiled at the band's audacity. What did a band of pasty-faced art students from England know about bumping on the dance floor anyway? As it turns out, the band knew quite a bit. While The Cure had not made a pure "dance" record since THE WALK, their albums usually contained a track or two to keep the ol' feet a-tapping.

Cure Wish CD  (1992)

The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass, keyboards); Perry Bamonte (guitar, keyboards, 6-string bass); Porl Thompson (guitar); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Boris Williams (drums, percussion).
Recorded at The Manor, Oxfordshire, England.
On the surface, Wish sounds happier than Disintegration, and the sunny British Invasion hooks of the hit single "Friday I'm in Love" certainly seem to indicate that the record is a brighter affair than its predecessor. Dig a little deeper and the album reveals itself to be just as tortured, and perhaps more despairing. Granted, the sound of the record, with its jangling guitars and simple arrangements, is more immediately accessible than the epic gloom of Disintegration, but nearly every song finds Robert Smith wracked with depression. Unfortunately, the even-handed production makes the record sound very similar, so it is less compelling than it might have been, but there are a handful of gems ("High," "A Letter to Elise," ...

Cure Bloodflowers CD  (2000)

The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards, 6-sting bass); Perry Bamonte (guitar, 6-string bass); Roger O'Donnell (keyboards); Simon Gallup (bass); Jason Cooper (drums, percussion).
Recorded at St. Catherine's Court, Avon, and Rak Studio 3, London, England.
BLOODFLOWERS was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
The Cure edged into new territory with Wild Mood Swings, but nevertheless drew scorn from certain quarters because it eschewed goth rock for pop, both pure and twisted. For 2000's Bloodflowers, Robert Smith decided to give the people what they wanted: a classic Cure album, billed as the third part of a trilogy begun with Pornography and continued with Disintegration. That turns out to be more or less true, since Bloodflowers boasts all of the Cure's signatures: stately tempos, languid melodies, spacious arrangements, cavernous echoes, morose lyrics, keening vocals, long running times. If that's all you're looking for, Bloodflowers delivers in spades. If you want something transcendent, you're out of luck, since the album falls short of the mark, largely because it sounds too self-conscious. As one song segues into the next, it feels like Smith is striving to make a ...

Recorded at Logic Studios, Milan, Italy; Puk Studios, Denmark; The Church and Master Rock Studios, London, England; Axis, New York, New York.
In a word, stunning. Perhaps an odd word to use given that Violator continued in the general vein of the previous two studio efforts by Depeche Mode: Martin Gore's upfront lyrical emotional extremism and knack for a catchy hook filtered through Alan Wilder's ear for perfect arrangements, ably assisted by top English producer Flood. Yet the idea that this record would both dominate worldwide charts, while song for song being simply the best, most consistent effort yet from the band could only have been the wildest fantasy before its release. The opening two singles from the album, however, signaled something was up. First was "Personal Jesus," at once perversely simplistic, with a stiff, arcane funk/hip-hop beat and basic blues guitar chords, and tremendous, thanks to sharp production touches and David Gahan's echoed, snaky vocals. Then "Enjoy the Silence," a nothing-else-remains-but-us ballad pumped up into a huge, dramatic romance/dance number, commanding in its mock orchestral/choir scope. Follow-up ...

Frank Meyer is a man who loves his rock & roll, as anyone who has ever lent an ear to his work with the Streetwalkin' Cheetahs already knows, but his definition of the term goes beyond mere faster-and-louder blamalama, and the self-titled debut album from his new band Sweet Justice moves past the old-school punk sounds of the Cheetahs into plenty of tasty new directions. Teaming up with ex-ADZ bassist Bruce Duff and drummer Chris Markwood (who kept time for the Bellrays), Meyer and Sweet Justice deliver the high-powered goods on tunes like the bitter "Sold Me Out" and the blazing "Blood and Alcohol," but the trio offers plenty more for your entertainment ...
