Chapman's debut and its quickly produced follow-up CROSSROADS sound very much alike. While not a total departure, 1992's MATTERS OF THE HEART has a much different, richer sound. Subtle elements of world music, blues, and jazz enrich the folk-based starkness of the previous records. Unfortunately, this album was slightly too different for many of Chapman's early fans, and the incorrect received wisdom claims that it's a creative misstep.
The more textured arrangements and Jimmy Iovine's slick but not sterile production support Chapman's lyrics without overpowering them, and those lyrics are more mature and personal than before. The sometimes-empty sloganeering of CROSSROADS is at the barest minimum here, with Chapman instead focusing on character sketches like the thoroughly lovely "I Used to Be a Sailor" and the delicate title track. One of Tracy Chapman's finest.

Matters Of The Heart
$7.15 Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting ...

| | Hawkwind Space Ritual CDs (1973) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Matters Of The Heart
$11.29 Featuring Hawkwind's classic lineup, which included vocalist/guitarist (and band constant) Dave Brock and bassist/occasional vocalist Lemmy (soon to depart and form Motorhead), 1973's SPACE RITUAL is monolithic in stature and stands as the group's most impressive live (if not overall) recording. Although the ensemble often garnered comparisons to Pink Floyd, Hawkwind was far more aggressive than Waters, Gilmour, and company, charging through a potent, freeform set of cosmic freakouts (the trippy "Earth Calling") and rumbling metal ("Lord of Light" sounds like Black Sabbath in lunar orbit). While the entire outing is stellar, the British space-rock group really hits a stride during the epic "Orgone Accumulator," which settles into a deep, acid groove. Although the spoken-word segments (most notably a recitation of sci-fi/fantasy author Michael Moorcock's "Black Corridor" by vocalist/poet Bob Calvert) might not suit everyone, SPACE RITUAL endures as both a document of its era and one of Hawkwind's finest releases.
Recorded live in December 1972 and released the following year, Space Ritual is an excellent document of Hawkwind's classic lineup, underscoring the group's status as space rock pioneers. As the quintessential "people's band," Hawkwind carried '60s countercultural idealism into the '70s, gigging constantly, playing wherever there was an audience, and even playing for free on five consecutive days outside the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The ...

| | Margot & The Nuclear So And So' Dust Of Retreat CD (2005) Exco
Matters Of The Heart
$11.45 On its major-label debut, this Indiana eight-piece performs quirky, richly layered, folk-based material laced with traces of electronica, while founder member Richard Edwards croons finely detailed, confessional songs like the atmospheric "A Sea Chanty of Sorts" and the pretty chamber pop of "Vampires in Blue Dresses." There's musical muscle behind the delicate filigree, too, as evidenced by the grinding guitars of "Barfight Revolution, Power Violence," while "Skeleton Key" is infectious, sensitive, and guilt-ridden.
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's have created an album that both the casual music fan and music perfectionist will enjoy. The Dust of Retreat is a cinematic chamber pop songbook of what was once and what might have been. Singer/songwriter Richard Edwards, only in his early twenties when he composed these mini-epics, is quite fond of New York. Mesmerized by the Greenwich Village art scene of the 1960s and curious about how people lived during that time, he uses this interest as the inspiration behind The Dust of Retreat. Whether that is through film, poetry, or music, the notion that another world exists within those realms holds a romantic kind of quality. That kind of thing is nearly unimaginable unless you lived through it; however, Margot & the Nuclear So and So's build upon some of those castles in the sky. It takes a band of eight to realize this vision, as a lush assortment of strings, brass, percussion, and guitars keeps The Dust of Retreat at a ...
| | Bobby Callender Le Musee De L'Impessionnisme CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Matters Of The Heart
$15.89 Saying Robert Callender's reputation was obscure even in the world of psychedelic collectors was understating the case, but even so his first two albums and occasional singles had been circulating around well enough. Turns out that he had a third and final one that had only been released in the Netherlands in 1971, and as a prime example of how the vinyl album format became the repository of all sorts of insane ideas during that decade, Le Musee de l'Impressionisme not only takes the cake, but probably spikes it. Fallout's liner notes for the 2006 reissue (which has some inaccurate track divisions on the CD, it should be noted) use the words "grandiose folly" and there's not much more to immediately add to that -- it's ridiculous, but in a compellingly bizarre way. When you ...
