They Might Be Giants: John Linnell, John Flansburgh. Additional personnel: Nicholas Hill, Elma Mayer, Brian Dewan, Amy Allison, Judy Cohen, Laura Cantrell (vocals); Mark Feldman (violin); Garo Yellin (cello); Frank London (trumpet); Jim Thomas (drums). Recorded at The Magic Shop, New York. Although it lacks a standout single like "Birdhouse in Your Soul," Apollo 18 is a more consistent album than Flood, overflowing with ideas and pop hooks. The most noteworthy idea may have been "Fingertips," a "suite" of 21 song fragments designed to make each random play a new experience, but the meat of the album lies in pop songs like "I Palindrome I," "My Evil Twin," "She's Actual Size," and "Which Describes How You're Feeling." The album has a slightly darker feeling than its predecessors, but that just gives the album a resonance that was missing on Flood. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine APOLLO 18 is They Might Be Giants' second major label outing. It offers their now-familiar mix of catchy but oblique pop ditties ("I Palindrome I," "My Evil Twin," "The Statue Got Me High"), humorously punny numbers ("She's Actual Size," "Dinner Bell"), an endlessly unspooling narrative ("Turn Around"), and a quasi-educational song ("Mammal"). This time out they've also created a bold experiment with "Fingertips," a series of 21 separately-indexed song fragments that can be programmed by the listener (or randomly sequenced by the CD player) into a finished form. As always, John Linnel and John Flansburgh's seemingly nonsensical lyrics possess deceptively layered and highly crafted ideas and phrases that often add up to more than the sum of their parts. Coupled with hook-laden melodies and settings, the songs' friendly bearings quickly make them unforgettable.Rolling Stone (4/30/92, p.57) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...Superb pop craftsmen with a hyperactive sense of caprice...the album switches styles with the dial-a-style eclecticism of a jukebox..." Entertainment Weekly (3/27/92, p.76) - "...dorky charm...good old-fashioned tunefulness..." - Rating: B+ Q (4/92, p.83) - 3 Stars - Good - "...the usual slice of fun...never less than entertaining..." Village Voice (3/9/93, p.80) - "...The packed pop-pomo pastiches make the redolent meaninglessness of near-literal lyrics signify and sing....stunning..." - Rating: A- They Might Be Giants Apollo 18 Songs Apollo 18 Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) They Certainly are Giants Your first Giants CD should be Flood, it's the most accessible and poppy, but Apollo is a must once you get into the band. This CD is similar to their first two, a mix of styles from out and out pop rockers to weird satires of style and culture. The Statue Got me high is truly a classic of strange words mixed with catchy pop rock, while The Guitar and Fingertips are collages of musical phrases that will make you laugh while you sing along. The Guitar parodies the Lion Sleeps Tonight while Fingertips goes through what sounds like a bunch of absurd TV commercials. There's also a nifty little Spider tune mocking old Japanese sci fi b movies from the early '60's. Yeah, it's weird but if you get into these guys, this is one of their best. Just start with Flood if you're new to them. If you have and like their first CD, and Lincoln, the second one, you'll really like this one. Submitted by Andrew M. Just Plain Fun Starting with the punk edge of "Dig My Grave" and quickly jumping into the quirky "I Palindrome I", Apollo 18 is just fun all around. The John duo does a great job on this, their fourth studio album, by incorporating different styles into their own bizarre accordion rock. Their catchy hooks will draw you in, and their smart lyrics just might teach you something. Although it doesn't quite live up to the power of Flood, it is enough to draw in new fans, while providing great new material for the returning TMBG heads. Jack Kerouac heard jazz verses in the gears of the trains that rolled through America while Walt Whitman heard his name being passed through the leaves of the trees. For Seattle's DEAR JOHN LETTERS' singer/songwriter Robb Benson, he senses poems that seem to originate from the internal world, and inherently compliments the form within his song craft. "For me it's like a channel, he says, "I just let them flow through me. I enjoy it when words have rhythm or if they just sound great together no matter what the meaning is behind them. There is a song in every good batch of words."On Stories of Our Lives, DEAR JOHN LETTERS' third album and first national release, Benson has definitely chosen the right path. Along with guitarist and noted producer/engineer Johnny Sangster (Mudhoney, The Posies), bassist Richard Davidson and drummer Cassady Laton, the band has recorded a luminous fourteen-song album of stunning pop gems and introspective, tender ballads.
