Somewhat unhappy with their roles as second bananas in their respective groups, Kim Deal (bassist of the Pixies) and Tanya Donelly (guitarist of the Throwing Muses) struck out on their own. The result, after hiring Josephine Wiggs (bassist from the seriously underrated Perfect Disaster) and ex-Slint drummer Britt Walford (who took the name Shannon Doughton for his Breeders-related recordings), was the album POD, which was released in 1990 to great success. A very short record (12 songs in just under 30 minutes), it is a jagged, barbed affair that clearly shows its creators pedigrees.
The record's immediately obvious standout is the cover of the Beatles' "Happiness Is a Warm Gun," which far outstrips the original in creeping menace. However, other, more lasting, highlights include "Oh!," with an ever-so-slowly sawing violin; "Hellbound," which abounds in shards of guitar shrapnel and abortion references; the hesitantly exuberant "Fortunately Gone," with Deal's raspy voice and Donelly's sweeter one nicely balancing one another; and "Metal Man," with twin guitars and some lyrical weirdness. The spiky, aggressive pop music of POD is certainly the Breeders' high point--and when they reconvened two years later, much of their jaggedness had been buffed out.

Alternative Press (7/95, p.86) - Ranked #86 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...POD's a bizarre, intense, hypnotic album, and it [gets] you thinking that maybe ol' Black whatever-his-name wasn't the only chap worth his weight in sludge from New Jersey....The whole darn thing moans and gets better as the sky gets darker and your lover's away longer..." NME (Magazine) (1990) - 9 out of 10 - "...A lasting, enduring album....a welcome collection of emotive challenges. And from an almost-supergroup it's a good Deal better than expected..." Pod album
$10.39 This remastered edition of MEAT PUPPETS II is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, as well as bonus and previously unreleased tracks.
Recorded in 1983. Includes liner notes by Michael Azerrad, Derrick Bostrom, Robert Azerrad & Tom Carson.
Digitally remastered by Stuart Sullivan (Arkadelphia's House Studio, November 1998).
The early-1980s post-punk musings of the Meat Puppets give new meaning to the term "alternative country." Instead of adding a country flavor to traditional rock, or overdriving a honky-tonk sound, the group achieved a genuine marriage of avant-rock weirdness and earthy Americana on this, their defining release. The frenzied two-step of "Magic Toy Missing" and "Lost" mates hoedown with electric freakout. The group's tripping-in-the-desert sense of neo-psychedelia is displayed at its apex on the twisted classic "Plateau" and the acid-drenched country-punk of "New Gods." Like Neil Young (a strong influence), the Meat Puppets were blessed with a totally natural sense of strangeness ...

| | Breeders Last Splash CD (1993)
Pod music CDs
$7.99 Surf's up, but--oooh--what's that dark stuff in the water? Imagine if you can, the spectral spawn of the Ventures, the Ramones, and the Beach Boys suddenly washing up with the high tide, and you get some idea of what to expect from the Breeders, a rogue girl group with a fresh point of view. Hard-edged yet supremely lyrical, the Breeders spend much of LAST SPLASH groping their way through the contradictions of good times in the sun and ambivalence about loss of innocence.
The Breeders' riot-grrrl take on surf punk owes little to the happy naivete of the Ronettes or the Bangles, but catches its spark from a Runaways-through-Bikini Kill fury. On a raveup like "Cannonball," fired by a dancing, jittery bass line and moody, careening power chords, the Breeders evoke girl-group ...
| | Amps Pacer CD (1995)
Pod songs
$6.09 Regardless of whether The Amps are Kim Deal's next rock band or just a temporary reprieve from her old one (The Breeders), PACER, the group's debut, is a confident, forceful album, loaded with lo-fi nuggets and none of the sloppy baggage usually attributed to side projects. The cast is different--only Breeders drummer Jim MacPherson's Keith Moon-like explosions are familiar--but Deal's boisterous musical ...
| | Breeders Title TK CD (2002)
Pod album
$9.29 It may have taken nearly a decade for The Breeders to deliver a follow-up to 1993's critically and commercially acclaimed LAST SPLASH, but TITLE TK does not disappoint, as Dayton's Deal sisters continue to serve up their brand of oddly patched-together pop. With lo-fi engineering deity Steve Albini manning the board, The Breeders return with a stripped-down sound that manifests itself on off-kilter cuts like "Sinister Foxx" and the shambling, gloriously dissonant "Too Alive."
