CRUISIN' DEUCES was guitarist-extraordinaire Danny Gatton's second album for Elektra. Sadly, it was also his final record, as he committed suicide the year after its release. Like its predecessor, 88 ELMIRA ST, this album is a fine introduction to an amazing instrumentalist's broad approach to the guitar.
Gatton's style melds swing, rockabilly, jazz, blues, and country into a nicely flowing whole, aided by a fine sense of pacing. His playing can be fiery or heartbreakingly lyrical. One can't help but be moved by the gorgeous guitar and lap-steel melodies of "Tragedy." Gatton is backed primarily by his regular quartet, but the set is also sprinkled with dazzling guest appearances--including a vocal turn by Rodney Crowell on "It Doesn't Matter Anymore."
Recorded at Big Mo Studios, Wheaton, Maryland; Bias, Springfield, Virginia; Sorcerer Studios, New York.

Cruisin' Deuces album
$14.79 Includes liner notes by John Previti, Timm Biery, Ed Eastridge.
The performance captured on In Concert 9/9/94 happened less than a month before Danny Gatton's death, and from the sound of the album, it's hard to believe he was in a deep depression. Gatton's playing is incendiary and fiery, an extended display of sheer virtuosity, and the songs are consistently better than ...

Cruisin' Deuces album
$15.39 Recorded live at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver, Colorado.
One of the more eclectic souls when it comes to the outskirts of adult contemporary pop, Rickie Lee Jones originally didn't foresee this 2001 concert from Colorado being released. However, the disc is a welcomed array for die-hard fans and newcomers alike. With most of the songs running over five minutes, certain numbers take on a life of their own, particularly the supporting solos on "Weasel and the White Boys Cool." Opening with a rather rollicking "Rodeo Girl," the singer opts for a quieter, jazzier feel on later numbers such as "Just My Baby." There is a slight problem on the song, though, as her voice tends to get lost in the mix slightly, but such is the case with live shows and recordings ...

$12.95 There are few artists who offer the raw sincerity and accomplished musical acumen that guitarist, singer, and songwriter Kelly Joe Phelps does. From his first offering, Lead Me On on the Burnside label, through his subsequent studio outings for Rykodisc, Phelps has done something remarkable: forged himself a solid identifying mark as a folk and blues musician of distinction in fields owing so much to the past that latter-day ...

| | Stauffer, Dave & The Believers Pray Service CD (2008)
Cruisin' Deuces album
$9.85 Each human story in each song of the PRAY SERVICE album is taken from the dramatic story in one of the musical screenplays of Dave Stauffer’s seven-movie screenplay series, “Sow Y’oats!” In the seven related stories, the same characters are followed from the age of six to their middle age in many dramatic, insightful, religious, romantic, and sexy subplots. The seven screenplays incorporate about eighty original songs that Dave Stauffer has written, and his talented band of Believers has recorded. The plots have a lot to do with dating, maturing, and philosophy dealing with God—and so do the songs they sing. In several of the PRAY SERVICE songs, the singers speak their lines in or during the song, which adds a deep meaning to the words of the songs. By listening to the words and the mood of the music, each listener can feel the emotion of the dramatic event that the song describes in the screenplay. To write his songs, Dave Stauffer has drawn on his many years of singing tenor in church choirs as well as his years of singing, playing bass and guitar, and writing songs in several rock and roll bands that played for years in ...
