All songs written or co-written by Del The Funky Homosapien. Samples include "Flat Backing" (as performed by Blue Mitchell), "What Do You Do In The Dark" (as performed by B.T. Express), "Chain Reaction" (as performed by The Crusaders) and "Tranquility" (as performed by Sam Rivers).

After helping create the West Coast underground scene with his 1991 debut, Del tha Funkee Homosapien made a radical departure with 1993's No Need for Alarm, eschewing the familiar G-funk of his debut for a jazzier, more sophisticated sound more akin to East Coast acts like Black Moon and Main Source. The thematic and lyrical content of Del's work underwent a considerable change as well, with No Need for Alarm largely avoiding the endearing comic vignettes and blunted utopian vision of his debut for a never-ending string of battle raps. Del's loopy sense of humor remained intact, but without the structure and pop savvy of I Wish My Brother George Was Here, No Need for Alarm feels a bit aimless, even if it does contain some of Del's best work to date. "Catch a Bad One" showcases Del's new direction to the best effect, driven by Casual's sinister, hypnotic, string-laced production and some of the fiercest and most potent battle raps of Del's career. When No Need for Alarm works, it's terrific -- funny, skillfully produced, and wonderfully propulsive. Unfortunately, it only works about a third of the time. Critics have taken Del's debut to task for having a fairly generic P-funk-dominated sound more in line with executive producer Ice Cube's work than Del's unique sensibility, but Del has always functioned better when paired with strong collaborators. Sure, it could be argued that I Wish My Brother George Was Here and Deltron 3030 reflect the sensibilities of producers and co-producers Ice Cube and DJ Pooh and Dan the Automator as much as they do Del, but working with strong-willed peers has a tendency to temper the artist's tendency toward self-indulgence and bring out the best in him. Without a strong sense of direction, No Need for Alarm is frustratingly uneven, rich and transcendent one moment and aimless and repetitive the next. Still, it's a challenging, unique, and uncompromising follow-up, one well worth picking up for anyone interested in either the evolution of West Coast hip-hop or just the evolution of one of its most talented, eccentric, and gifted artists. ~ Nathan Rabin

Entertainment Weekly (12/10/93, p.78) - "...Moody, ambient and playful, [NO NEED FOR ALARM] widens the stylistic gap between [Del] and his cousin, Ice Cube. One hundred percent gangsta-cliche free..." - Rating: A-
Vibe (11/93, p.115) - "...Until the next episode, as Del grows into manhood, [NO NEED FOR ALARM's] good enough..."
The Source (12/93, p.85) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...NO NEED FOR ALARM is a cool blend of jazz, funk and hip-hop done exclusively by the members of the hieroglyphics crew...[Del] comes with a lyrical minefield of endless cerebral flow that will leave all lazy MC's dumbstruck...."

No need for alarm is one if not the greatest example of hip-hop without commercials, you will hear del flow about everyday type stuff, not about his jewerly, car, how much of a player he is,etc.Few can claim his prowess on the mic, most fans of hip-hop love em or not,if you dont like him you probably are into commercials, and phony lyrics. If youre a musician or a fan of lyrics and phat-beats,youll love it!!!

4 stars It's the D-E-L!! From P-Funk samples to Soul 70's sample
At first I thought this album wasn't that good, but listening to most of the songs on this CD wasn't too bad. On "No More Worries" (which is one of my favorite tracks) I liked how Snupe ripped it. "No Need For Alarm" is way different from "I Wish My Brother George Was Here". I only heard three songs from that album ("Mistadobalina", "Dr. Bombay", & "Sleepin' On My Couch") and 30 second samples from the rest.

Samples include "Mingus Fingus No. 2" (as performed by Charles Mingus), "Rain Dance" (as performed by Herbie Hancock), "Melody For Thelma" (as performed by Blue Mitchell) and "Who Sey Me Dun" (as performed by Cutty Ranks). After earning both BET video play and underground cred (reaching beyond the rap community) for their 1993 debut with clever and twisted rhymes delivered with unique cadence, the duo of Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po returned two years later with another classic late golden age of hip-hop record. About the only change-up on STRESS: THE EXTINCTION is hinted ...

This is the defining album of East Coast crime rap, which was largely established by the Brooklyn-based Boot Camp Clik of MCs. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York. As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC'są," "Buck Em Down," ...

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien I Wish My Brother George Was Here CD  (1991)

No Need For Alarm
CD $8.39  4.5 stars Audio Samples
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien may be the cousin of gangsta rap icon Ice Cube, who was the executive producer on this debut, but it would be hard to imagine two more dissimilar artists. Yet, just as Ice Cube helped popularize and legitimize West Coast gangsta rap with NWA, Del helped lay the foundation for what would become California's thriving underground scene with his seminal debut, I Wish My Brother George Was Here. Predating similarly seminal debuts from like-minded artists like tha Alkaholiks, Souls of Mischief, Freestyle Fellowship, and Pharcyde, Brother George takes the Parliament-Funkadelic-derived G-funk sound popularized by NWA and spins it into exciting new directions, replacing gangsta rap's nihilism with a healthy sense of the absurd. Released while Del was still a teen, Brother George offers a take on city life that's wry and bemused rather than tense and violent, addressing such crucial issues as having to ride the bus ("The Wacky World of Rapid Transit") and shiftless ...

Both Sides of the Brain is Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's fourth album, on which Del makes an effort to show both sides of his personality. The listener also gets to see another side of Del on "Jaw Gymnastics," on which Del and Casual team up for a fierce battle rhyme. Throughout ...

Earwig 16th Anniversary Sampler
Earwig 16th Anniversary Sampler CD

No Need For Alarm
CD $12.69  Audio Samples
Earwig was founded in 1979 by Michael Robert Frank, and it quickly become one of the top blues labels, recording artists based on the quality of their music rather than on sales potential. To celebrate Earwig's 16th anniversary, this 18-song collection of music from the label's catalog was put out in 1995. There is impressive variety on the single CD, with the settings ranging from Little Brother Montgomery's solo piano to rockish blues groups and everything in between. The selections were well chosen, and although sticking to the blues (no Motown, R&B, or soul music here), the disc shows the wide variety of music that appeared in the 1980s and '90s in the blues world. Overall, this CD gives one an excellent overview of some of the treasures in the Earwig catalog. ~ Scott Yanow This first Earwig blues sampler commemorates the 16th anniversary since label Producer and CEO Michael Frank began the label by taking Frank Frost, Sam Carr, and Jack Johnson -- The Jelly Roll Kings -- into a Memphis studio to record Rockin' The Juke Joint Down (4901). Since that magic session, these guys have made four Earwig albums between them. Earwig has concentrated on middle-aged and elder bluesmen who are under-represented in recordings and live performance. Honeyboy Edwards, Sunnyland Slim, Homesick James, and H-Bomb Ferguson - seminal figures in the history of the blues - all made new recordings on Earwig. The label also made the first album recordings of Lester Davenport, Aron Burton, Lovie Lee, Big Jack Johnson, and John Primer as bandleaders rather than as sidemen. And the label has proudly released private tapes produced by Little Brother Montgomery - one of the most important blues ...
