There aren't many artists who are recognizable 10 seconds into a tune. But from the opening bars of "Twisted," the first cut on this disc, it's clear we're listening to the one and only master of the vocal slow grind, Keith Sweat. Al Green he ain't, but Sweat's nasal, midrange voice has come to define modern hip-hop-inflected soul. And these 12 tunes are the Sweat formula, beginning to end: light, mid-tempo funk, with just enough of an edge to keep your head nodding to the beat.
Throw in the usual opening layers of harmonizing backing vocals, a few incidental raps, and you've got the Sweat method down. There's some high-powered help on this record, as Gerald Levert and Ronald Isley lend their generous talents to the cause. The ladies always seem to be more affected by Mr. Sweat's approach than the guys--understandably so--so they're probably going to be the ones running to the checkout counter with this one.

Purchase Keith Sweat CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | R Kelly 12 Play CD (1993)
Keith Sweat
$8.75 Raised in the projects of Chicago's South Side, the young R. Kelly displayed an uncanny natural aptitude for the piano, and cut his teeth as a performer by playing a portable electric keyboard and singing with his homies out on the mean streets of the Windy City. The sounds of gospel music and the great romantic balladeers suffuse R. Kelly's work, and on 12 PLAY, his libidinous follow-up to BORN INTO THE 90'S, this gifted singer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist draws upon all his formative experiences to create a sensual, evolutionary style of contemporary R&B.
Evolutionary in that Kelly's a classic heart-throb (with virtuoso chops the likes of Freddie Jackson and Luther Vandross) who walks that historical line between the sacred and secular streams of black music. By overlaying a street-smart contemporary sensibility, with a gangsta-style image and discrete hip hop punctuations, Kelly has transformed R&B into a music that can hold its own on the charts with today's rhythm heavy rappers.
Animated by Kelly's keyboard prowess and arranging skills, the R&B hybrids on 12 PLAY reach extraordinary sensual heights on such foreplay classics as "Bump N' Grind" and the title tune, a heat and serve, oven ready dish on how to do the nasty: and from all the evidence, one can only assume R. Kelly's 12-play is thrice as nice as your standard, garden variety lover's 4-play. "Your body is a playground, let me lick you up and down" he urges his partner on "It Seems Like You're Ready," growing more fervent with each chorus, as background singers coo away suggestively. On tunes such as "Freak Dat Body," "Homie Lover Friend" and "I Like The Crotch On You," Kelly alternates hip-hop choruses with his own yearning tenor to powerful effect.
Recorded at The Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois.
Personnel: R. Kelly (vocals, rap vocals); Carey Kelly, DeAndre Boykins, Casey Kelly (rap vocals); Keith Henderson, Michael J. Powell, Bobby Broom (guitar); Michael Logan, Mike Logan (pi
| | Blackstreet Another Level CD (1996)
Keith Sweat
$11.99 "No Diggity" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was nominated for Best R&B Song.
Teddy Riley's fans were begging for a reunion of Guy, the trio with which he brought deep-soul music back to the R&B genre, but Riley chose to forge ahead with his new band, Blackstreet, instead. Wise move. Blackstreet's second album really does take the Riley R&B sound to ANOTHER LEVEL. It's one of the best R&B albums we've heard in a long time.
The tracks here are unbelievably funky, and though two of Blackstreet's four singers have turned over since the debut--the new ones are Eric Williams and Mark L. Middleton--the vocal harmonies are breathtaking. Classic Stevie Wonder would be an apt comparison. Riley evokes old-school soul a number of times here--"Don't Leave Me" and "The Lord Is Real" sample the DeBarge tunes "A Dream" and "Time Will Reveal," respectively. But that's not to say Blackstreet doesn't move forward to ANOTHER LEVEL, because with super-producer Riley, of course it does.
Additional personnel includes: Dr. Dre, Queen Pen, Beverly Crowder, Karen Anderson, Shaquanna Elam, Darryl Adams, ELAN, Lamenga Ford, Shannon Cooper, Deja, Taja (vocals); William Stewart, Sprague Williams, Serban Ghenea, Eric Williams, Wesley Hoggs, Tommy Sims (various instruments); Frank "Nitty" Pimental, Roosevelt Harrell (programming).
Blackstreet: Teddy "Street" Riley, Eric "E" Williams (vocals, various instruments); Chauncey "Black" Hannibal, Mark L. Middleton (vocals).
| | Keith Sweat Make It Last Forever CD (1987)
Keith Sweat
$10.65 Although only "I Want Her" crossed over to the pop charts, hitting the Top Five, the five singles from Keith Sweat's debut album were prominently featured on R&B radio and dance floors from the winter of 1987 through the fall of 1988. Produced by nascent superstar producer and eventual label head Babyface, MAKE IT LAST FOREVER was arguably the very first "new jack swing" album; that style's characteristic mix of old-school soul-man vocals and hip-hop-influenced arrangements is all over this album.
The most obvious nod to soul tradition is in Sweat's unapologetically bombastic cover of the Dramatics' early-'70s lost-love ballad "In the Rain," but Sweat's no-nonsense vocals on the opening "Something Just Ain't Right" and the moving love jam of the title track are equally impressive. Though Babyface's characteristic production style would soon become so ubiquitous that by the early '90s it would be the dominant sound of R&B, his work on this album still sounds fresh.

| | Keith Sweat I'll Give All My Love To You CD (1990)
Keith Sweat
$9.19 The glut of faceless, interchangeable new jack swing artists plaguing urban contemporary radio in the early '90s served one useful purpose: they reminded you how exciting the originators of the style (Guy, Bobby Brown, and Keith Sweat, among others) could be. When Sweat's overdue sophomore effort, I'll Give All My Love to You, was released in 1990, it exposed countless new jack automations for the unimaginative frauds they were. Though not quite as strong as 1987's Make It Last Forever, this is a respectable disc that sounds consistently heartfelt and sincere. The hard electro-funk groove of "Make You Sweat" is likable enough, but ballads and slow jams like "Just One of Them Things" (a duet with Gerald LeVert), "I Knew That You Were Cheating," and "Merry Go Round" are where the Harlem native really shines. For all its high-tech production gloss and use of hip-hop elements, this self-produced CD reminds you that Sweat is quite aware of the great soul music of the 1970s. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Keith Sweat Keep It Comin' CD (1991)
Keith Sweat
$8.55 Whining, begging soulman Keith Sweat's third album, Keep It Comin', fails to live up to the New Yorker's heart-wrenching first two; too many forgettable moments mar the set. The good include the heartfelt "Ten Commandments of Love" (not the Moonglows' classic), "Let Me Love You," and make-out specials ("I Want to Love You Down" and "Give Me What I Want"); but if you have to pass on a Sweat CD this is the one. ~ Andrew Hamilton

| | Keith Sweat Get Up On It CD (1994)
Keith Sweat
$9.29 After scoring massive success with his first two albums, Make It Last Forever and I'll Give All My Love to You, Keith Sweat's third album, Keep It Comin', signaled something of a creative and commercial slump for the new jack pioneer, which continued through 1994's Get Up on It. However, Get Up on It is not a bad album by any means. In fact, the set is classic Keith Sweat, filled to the brim with the pleading ballads that made this Harlem crooner so popular. Sweat began to utilize female background vocals, courtesy of Kut Klose, to full effect on this album, especially on the hit title track (one of the album's shining moments), a trend that he perfected on his huge 1996 self-titled comeback album. So Get Up on It finds Sweat in a stage of transition, leaving the formula that began to grow stale on Keep It Comin' and beginning to feature female backing vocals at center stage, somewhat similar to what Barry White and Luther Vandross had done before him. Get Up on It churned out two other singles, the up-tempo yet slightly unimaginative "How Do You Like It?" (which, as the set's lead single, didn't really work to catapult the album to massive early sales) and the big ballad "When I Give My Love," which is pure Keith Sweat. Other standouts include "Put Your Loving Through the Test," featuring the late Roger Troutman, and "Telephone Love." For fans of classic Keith Sweat, R&B ballads, and mid-tempo grooves, this album will do, although it doesn't rank as one of the more essential pieces in this artist's enduring catalog. ~ Jose F. | | Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra CD (1969)
Keith Sweat
$12.65 Charlie Haden's first album, LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, appeared when he was 32 years old. Desipte his youth, his musical experience was already deep and wide; he spent time in Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet, then found a place in the ensembles of both Keith Jarrett and Alice Coltrane. For this album, his assembled orchestra includes an impressive list of the cream of the late-'60s jazz avant garde, including Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Dewey Redman, Michael Mantler, Paul Motian, and Roswell Rudd. Bley, who played piano and wrote three of the pieces, would follow a similar musical path on her own subsequent releases. The set is informed in large part by Haden's interest in the Spanish Civil War and his ongoing social and political concerns. What makes this set so engaging is that he's captured the heart of the matter with honest musical passion.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Includes original release liner notes by Charlie Haden.
Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Dewey Redman (alto & tenor saxophone); Gato Barbieri (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Mike Mantler (trumpet); Don Cherry (cornet, Indian wood & bamboo flutes); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Bob Northern (French horn, wood blocks, crow call, bells, whistle); Howard Johnson (tuba); Pery Robinson (clarinet); Carla Bley (piano, tambourine); Sam Brown (guitar, Tanganyikan guitar, thumb piano); Paul Motian, Andrew Cyrille (drums, percussion).

| | Rick Derringer Live CD (1977)
Keith Sweat
$10.49 A blistering live set from Derringer, featuring most of his best-known songs. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Rick Derringer may not be a great singer or a great songwriter (he tops out at good with flashes of really good), but he is a great guitar player and Derringer Live is the record where you get the best display of his white-hot guitar-slinging talents. Containing songs from Rick Derringer's first three albums, Derringer Live is pieced together from 1977 gigs in Toronto; Hartford, CT; and Youngstown, OH. Unsurprisingly, they picked his hardest-rocking, most exciting tracks like "Teenage Love Affair," "Still Alive and Well," "Uncomplicated," and his classic "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo." The performances are fiery, the band is tight, and Derringer wrings every last drop of rock out of his guitar. Anyone who isn't a fan of Derringer might find Derringer Live to be a little on the tedious and simplistic side, but if you are a fan, then this is great stuff. ~ Tim Sendra
