Third Eye Blind's eponymous debut is catchier than the average post-grunge album, and that fact alone reveals a lot about the band. Instead of relying on standard, plodding grunge influences, Third Eye Blind draw heavily from the simple hook-laden traditions of classic arena rock, which makes the album more immediate. Unfortunately, this also makes it a little simplistic -- the group can craft a naggingly memorable hook, as evidenced by the single "Semi-Charmed Life," but they aren't always able to fashion them into songs. Still, Third Eye Blind is easy on the ears, and its straight-ahead professionalism makes it a pleasurable listen for post-grungers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
This San Francisco band's first album is a study in contradictions, presenting heavy, often melancholy, themes in the guise of catchy, tuneful power pop. The irresistible single "Semi-Charmed Life" is just one example of Kevin Cadogan and Stephan Jenkins' agile lyrical stylings. The delirious tempo aptly reflects both a high feeling and a sense of desperation, of things spinning out of control.
The album is chock full of searching lyrics set against a background of lush, rhythmic music. "How's It Going To Be" has a palpable sense of nostalgia and loss. WSNI: Great Ladies of Rock 'N' Roll 60's includes 25 pop and R&B standards from Aretha Franklin, Petula Clark, and Dionne Warwick, along with one-hit wonders Toys ("A Lover's Concerto"), Patty & the Emblems ("Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl"), and Murmaids ("Popsicles and Icicles"). Former Cash Money golden boy--the man credited with coining the term "bling"--is back, following up on his string of Chopper City mixtapes with a group album featuring his crew, the Chopper City Boyz. Sniper, VL Mike, Gar, and B.G.'s little brother, Hakim, all hold their own alongside their mentor. The clique's collective gritty Nawlins rhyme style and gangsta lyricism at times recalls the glory of the Cash Money golden age.
Released almost a year after it was announced that rapper B.G. was leaving Koch and setting sail on Atlantic Records, the B.G. & the Chopper City Boyz release We Got This landed on Koch with a whole lot of Chopper City Boyz and less B.G. than you'd expect judging from the artwork.
