Having had staggering success in the R&B world on their own, Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill united their prodigious talents on LEVERT-SWEAT-GILL. Levert has a proven track record, both as a solo artist and with his group Levert. Keith Sweat has made his mark both as a performer and as a producer. Johnny Gill first found stardom at 16 with the legendary New Edition, parlaying that group's success into a stellar solo career.
At home on either side of the mixing desk, they were able to take complete control of the project, as performers, producers and as writers. This is not to say they didn't enlist some fellow superstars to contribute--guest producers include Sean "Puffy" Combs ("You Got Me," which features rap group The Lox) and Jermaine Dupri ("Where Did I Go Wrong"). LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and MC Lyte appear on "Curious," and "All The Times" features the talents of Faith Evans and Missy Elliot, but the lighthearted "Door #1" is all LSG, turning the playful competition between the trio of hitmakers into a mock game show, and rounding out LEVERT-SWEAT-GILL as an R&B masterpiece which successfully covers the whole emotional spectrum.

Vibe (2/98, p.120) - "...At times the trio have to work at not outsinging one another; but the simmering vocal competition in LSG makes for some awesome ad-libs..." | | Glory B Da Funk's On Me!: The Bootsy Collins Anthology CDs (2001)
Levert Sweat Gill music CDs
$15.65 Bootsy Collins has rightfully received accolades as funk's second officer (after George Clinton -- and it should be third after James Brown and Clinton). For decades he has been sampled by every rapper from Snoop Dogg to OutKast, and virtually created the bass sound that made the Red Hot Chili Peppers a household name and that created a career for Les Claypool. Yet, his most influential sound emanated not from his tenure with James Brown or P-Funk, but his own Rubber Band, and until now that wooly, wild, and surreal unit has never been properly anthologized. Rhino, in their usual thorough, crazy fashion, have directed the folks at the Warner archives and have created a massive, drop-the-bomb two-disc set that sets the record straight. This may not be no disco but it sho' 'nuff is some mean foolin' around. Sorry. Got carried away. In the middle of "Psychotic Bumpschool," the refrain David Byrne ripped off for "Life During Wartime" rears its beautiful, black, sassy head and introduces itself. The tune wraps itself around your head with that bass up front and as nasty and greasy as a lube job on a vintage Ford. Released in 1976 and recorded at P-Funk's home studio, ...

Levert Sweat Gill music CDs
$25.59 More than two decades on and, following a lull in the '90s, eight years into their most solid lineup -- founder Walter Salas-Humara (guitar, lead vox), Drew Glackin (guitars, bass), and Konrad Meissner (drums) -- the Silos continue to offer reliably muscular, marginally likable rock. But Come on Like the Fast Lane is disappointingly undistinguished. Salas-Humara's and Glackin's crunching, high-flying guitars call the shots throughout, but like S-H's vocals and unremarkable lyrics, there simply isn't much to write home about. In their attempt to strip down to the basics -- no additional players, first-take minimalism -- the Silos have done themselves a disservice by issuing an album that doesn't try very hard. Alternately melancholically weepy and life-just-rocks giddy, Salas-Humara plunders familiar territories without breaking much of a sweat. His rockers rock with a fair amount of zeal (opener "Behind Me Now," co-penned with Steve Wynn, sets a good example but is never really matched) and his ballads, especially the ones ...
