"The X-Files Theme" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
For the inevitable film debut of Scully and Mulder, the big guns were called out from all corners of the pop world. From the alt-rock sounds of Filter (whose version of of "One" is about as far from Three Dog Night's original as that band's "Mama Told Me Not To Come" was from its writer Randy Newman's interpretation), Foo Fighters and Tonic to the hi-tech mysterioso shadings of The Dust Brothers' "X-Files Theme," this soundtrack is a stylistic grab bag. Teaming with Aswad, Sting recasts his Police chestnut "Invisible Sun" as a reggae tune, the loopy Ween brothers chime in with "Beacon Light," and X pay tribute to their former producer Ray Manzarek with a punked-up version of the Doors classic "Crystal Ship." Oasis' Noel Gallagher, The Cure, Bjork and others round out this eclectic, slightly unsettling batch of tunes.

X-Files Soundtrack album
$13.85 ADORE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
In the wake of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's departure, the Pumpkins have taken a giant step away from the grunge-flavored, turbo-powered alt-rock anthems that made them famous. On ADORE, Billy Corgan and company opt instead for a more scaled-down approach that relies heavily on acoustic instruments and ballads of love and longing. Corgan may still be expressing angst here, but he does it in an understated, romantic way, addressing matters of the heart with subtlety and maturity on tunes like "Shame" and "To Sheila."
Don't take all this acoustic-based balladry (a path also explored ...

$11.39 Radiohead rebound from one-hit wonder status with this sophomore classic--the first to blueprint their operatic sonics.
On only their second outing Oxford's Radiohead fulfilled their huge potential, fashioning an album whose relentlessly downbeat tone was offset by an ability to formulate consistently winning melodies. The title track and "Just" throw some customary rock poses, but for the most part the band displayed ...

A series of short pieces set a variety of moods, from mournful introspection to waltzy vibraphone pop to upbeat, funk sassiness to the kind of trance craziness that only psychotic banjos can bring. On Music for Films, Philip Johnston shows off his amazing breadth and depth, with compositions for four films: Geld directed by Doris Dörrie; Money Man and Music of Chance both directed by Philip Haas; and Umbrellas directed by Henry Corra, Grahame, Weinbren, and Albert Maysles. The tracks are not entirely in order by film (for example, the songs from Geld are tracks 13-18 and ...
