Inventing his own brand of blue-eyed soul with hits like the ubiquitous Adult Radio classic "Holding Back The Years," Mick Hucknall has produced a body of work which is both a testament to his natural musical gift and an homage to the R&B classics which inspired him. Along with the ever shifting personnel of Simply Red, the sound Hucknall has created defies categorization. Shamelessly catchy, emotionally intense and always inventive, Simply Red possesses that elusive gift of being able to create instant classics. Hucknall adds another hue to an already rich palette with BLUE, which mixes originals with more than a few covers of some of his favorite songs.
Hucknall's voice is as smooth and expressive as ever, a disciplined yet flexible instrument which is perfectly suited to this introspective, deeply personal collection. The title track mixes a shuffling groove and emotive vocalization, while "Say You Love Me" opts for a slower, more casual feel, rich with the sweet, honest charm of vintage R&B. The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" is not only covered, but reworked by Puff Daddy cohort Stevie J who re-casts the song's groove against John Cougar Mellencamp's "Jack & Diane" for an unlikely marriage.

Blue Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Micks most under rated work I have all of Simply Reds CD's. I am finding that BLUE is making its way on my player more than the others. SAY YOU LOVE ME is a classic SIMPLY RED song strong enough to be put on any greatest hits compilation.
The real gem is the last track, LOVE HAS SAID GOODBYE AGAIN, which is not on every CD for some reason. It is one of his most beautiful compisitions and is, in my mind, amongst his very best. Submitted by mogahead79 (Chevy Chase, MD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Blue album
$10.79 "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song.
On URBAN HYMNS The Verve continues to widen the creative spectrum of psychedelic Britrock. The Verve exhibits a great deal of musical depth as they blanket "Bitter Sweet Symphony" with a full string section, employ acoustic guitars to evoke the simple, Carpenters-ish sentiments of "Sonnet" and "The Drugs Don't Work," ...
| | Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best Of George Michael CDs (1998)
Blue CD music
$15.99 Though he made his initial mark on music history as half of the unctuous British duo Wham, George Michael wasted little time in proving himself more than just a pretty pop face. This comprehensive two-disc compilation documents the career of a man who was able to successfully meld pop, R&B and serious, ...
| | Simply Red Love & The Russian Winter CD (1999)
Blue music CDs
$9.29 Any CD whose booklet includes a lengthy quote from Plato's SYMPOSIUM (huh?) can probably be accused with some justification of at least flirting with pretension. That said, Simply Red's last album of the millennium is more or less of a piece with its previous work--a modern take on '70s R&B and disco soul, heavily influenced by Gamble and Huff's songwriting and production style and (vocally) by Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke (Mick Hucknall's keening tenor has deepened a bit, but if anything it lends him a certain becoming gravitas). The one obvious departure from the band's formula ...

| | Eric Clapton Pilgrim CD (1998)
Blue album
$10.89 PILGRIM was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "My Father's Eyes" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Since donning an Armani suit back in the decadent '80s, Eric Clapton's music has become more polished as he's gotten older. Despite recording the all-blues FROM THE CRADLE collection in 1994, E.C. has either gone unplugged, collaborated with silky-smooth soulsters such as Babyface, or dabbled with current electronic trends. PILGRIM finds Slowhand doing all of the above on his first album of original material in nearly a decade. Unlike many older artists dipping their toes into the electronic pool, Clapton and co-producer Simon Climie's restrained use of programming gilds rather than overwhelms these original numbers.
In a welcome turn, Clapton wrote or co-wrote every song with the exception of Bob Dylan's "Born In Time" and "Going Down Slow," a St. Louis Jimmy blues nugget. Joined by Babyface on the former, Clapton gives both songs a lite-jazz treatment that meshes well with a burnished ...
| | Madonna Ray Of Light CD (1998)
Blue CD music
$5.99 RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year.
Relentlessly contemporary, RAY OF LIGHT pairs Madonna with producer William Orbit, an electronics wizard who has worked with major R&B acts and even such modern rockers as Blur and Depeche Mode. Reportedly, Madonna tried to snare Liam Howlett of high-strung techno-rockers the Prodigy into the project--Howlett ...

| | Roy Orbison 50 All-Time Greatest Hits CDs (2002)
Blue songs
$19.99 Perhaps Collectables Records should not get their hopes up on receiving "Truth in Advertising" awards for this two-disc Roy Orbison collection; a handy double set which compiled Orbison's classic Monument sides along with highlights from his releases for Sun, M-G-M, and Virgin would be a more than welcome addition to his catalog, but despite the title that's not what 50 All Time Greatest Hits has on board. This set features a whopping 47 tunes from Orbison's Monument years, with his three best known Sun sides ("Ooby Dooby," "Rock House," and "Go! Go! Go!") closing out disc two. All of Roy's classic '60s hits can be found on disc one, while a healthy selection of covers and lesser-knowns dominate the second half; it's all splendid material, even if the sequencing seems just a bit clunky in spots, and the mastering is more than adequate (though some of this material has sounded cleaner on previous CD releases). In short, as an overview of Orbison's most creatively and commercially fruitful period, this compilation does a fine job, but as a full career retrospective, it falls considerably short of the ...
| | Ultimate Run-Dmc CD (2003) Bonus DVD
Blue album
$8.99 Includes a bonus DVD which includes 13 Run-DMC videos, a mini documentary, and a discography.
Sure, other rap artists came before them, but Run-D.M.C. were rap's first superstars -- one of the first rap acts to not suffer from the "one-hit wonder syndrome." As a result, numerous compilations of the group have been issued over the years, but none are as comprehensive as the 2003 double-disc Ultimate Run DMC, which packs one disc of hits and one DVD of their most popular videos. Just about every single Run-D.M.C. favorite you can think of is included here, ...
