Inventing his own brand of blue-eyed soul with hits like the ubiquitous Adult Radio classic "Holding Back The Years," Mick Hucknall has produced a body of work which is both a testament to his natural musical gift and an homage to the R&B classics which inspired him. Along with the ever shifting personnel of Simply Red, the sound Hucknall has created defies categorization. Shamelessly catchy, emotionally intense and always inventive, Simply Red possesses that elusive gift of being able to create instant classics. Hucknall adds another hue to an already rich palette with BLUE, which mixes originals with more than a few covers of some of his favorite songs.
Hucknall's voice is as smooth and expressive as ever, a disciplined yet flexible instrument which is perfectly suited to this introspective, deeply personal collection. The title track mixes a shuffling groove and emotive vocalization, while "Say You Love Me" opts for a slower, more casual feel, rich with the sweet, honest charm of vintage R&B. The Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" is not only covered, but reworked by Puff Daddy cohort Stevie J who re-casts the song's groove against John Cougar Mellencamp's "Jack & Diane" for an unlikely marriage.

I have all of Simply Reds CD's. I am finding that BLUE is making its way on my player more than the others. SAY YOU LOVE ME is a classic SIMPLY RED song strong enough to be put on any greatest hits compilation.
The real gem is the last track, LOVE HAS SAID GOODBYE AGAIN, which is not on every CD for some reason. It is one of his most beautiful compisitions and is, in my mind, amongst his very best.

I have herad that Blue was not one of his best, but I found it to be very moving and enjoyable to listen too, I found all of his albums enjoyable Keep up the good work I wait for the next album due out soon. Kerry

Perhaps Collectables Records should not get their hopes up on receiving "Truth in Advertising" awards for this two-disc Roy Orbison collection; a handy double set which compiled Orbison's classic Monument sides along with highlights from his releases for Sun, M-G-M, and Virgin would be a more than welcome addition to his catalog, but despite the title that's not what 50 All Time Greatest Hits has on board. This set features a whopping 47 tunes from Orbison's Monument years, with his three best known Sun sides ("Ooby Dooby," "Rock House," and "Go! Go! Go!") closing out disc two. All of Roy's classic '60s hits can be found on disc one, while a healthy selection of covers and lesser-knowns dominate the second half; it's all splendid material, even if the sequencing seems just a bit clunky in spots, and the mastering is more than adequate (though some of this material has sounded cleaner on previous CD releases).
