There's a saying that most pop music is about romance, so it's logical that a good portion is also about sex. If you listen to Silk, however, it would be fair to say that 95 to 100 percent of their music is about sex. Ever since their debut, Lose Control, they have showed little inclination to sing about anything other than sex, coming on like disciples of early R. Kelly, crossed with a bit of Barry White and Boyz II Men. Through three albums, they haven't changed their modus operandi one bit, which makes Tonight a little predictable. If you're at all familiar with the previous two records, you know what to expect lyrically and musically from every track on the record, and chances are, you won't be too disappointed by this slightly over-produced, ballad-heavy set. The uninitiated may find the constant sex talk a little ridiculous and monotonous, but they'll likely groove on Darrell "Delite" Allamby's production, which updates classic '70s soul and funk. It can be a little glossy and glib, as well as a little lightweight in the songwriting department, but that Allamby production makes Tonight fairly effective romantic mood music -- even with Silk's vocal histrionics. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Capturing the heat and passion that has always been synonymous with Silk, John John, Big G, Jimmy, Timzo and Lil' G offer TONIGHT. The title track features their trademark brand of soul and funk with beautiful melody, packing power from the start. "Let's Make Love" finds the members of the group switching off lead vocals. TONIGHT is packed with 13 new tracks that never sound alike, though Silk's unique soul style is stamped on every song. Producer Darryl "Delite" Allamby handles production on most of the songs. Among the tracks that hit right where they're supposed to are "Meeting In My Bedroom," a slow, steady ballad that rises in temperature, and "Love You Down."Vibe (3/99, p.166) - "...TONIGHT is most notable for its virtuosic ensemble singing..." The Source (4/99, p.212) - "...TONIGHT is a veritable sexfest with at least 8 of the CDs' 17 tracks totally devoted to the fine art of freaking, fondling and, well, sex..." Producers include: Shaft, Havoc, J. Waxx Garfield, Timbaland, Kayne West. "Came Back For You" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. "Magic Stick" was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. After a couple low-profile years where it seemed like Lil' Kim was fading away into the obscurity of rap history, she returned in 2003 with a strong effort, La Bella Mafia, that reestablished her as an industry icon. Her previous album, Notorious K.I.M. (2000), had been somewhat of a disappointment relative to her smash debut, Hard Core (1996). Where her debut had lived up to its title and presented her as a sexually charged gangstress -- the Notorious B.I.G.'s right-hand woman and the momentarily undisputed queen of New York -- her follow-up made an ill-fated bid for pop-crossover success. Overseen by Puff Daddy on the eve of his initial popular collapse, Notorious K.I.M. was a mishmash collection of collabos and overblown Biggie odes that didn't resonate well with her fans, the pop crowd, or critics. It's perhaps fitting then that on La Bella Mafia Kim returns to her sexually charged gangstress image, forgoing overt pop concessions in favor of the sort of hardcore motifs that had always been her stock-in-trade. While she plays up the gangstress image well, there's still plenty of commerciality going on here, as hitmakers like Timbaland, Scott Storch, Kayne West, and Swizz Beatz craft the beats while guests like 50 Cent, Missy Elliott, Styles P, and Twista bring some additional flavor. This results in some edgy yet radio-ready ...
