Any CD whose booklet includes a lengthy quote from Plato's SYMPOSIUM (huh?) can probably be accused with some justification of at least flirting with pretension. That said, Simply Red's last album of the millennium is more or less of a piece with its previous work--a modern take on '70s R&B and disco soul, heavily influenced by Gamble and Huff's songwriting and production style and (vocally) by Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke (Mick Hucknall's keening tenor has deepened a bit, but if anything it lends him a certain becoming gravitas). The one obvious departure from the band's formula is "Thank You," with chiming guitars that threaten to go pop, but never really do.
Recorded at Westpoint Studios & Metropolis Studios, London, England.

Love & The Russian Winter
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is ...

This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
James Taylor is the godfather of the sensitive singer-songwriter movement of the '70s that clogged the charts with introspective folk-rock ballads and kept scores of troubadour manques up to their well-studied navels in champagne and caviar. He was the Nirvana to that generation's Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, an innovator ...
| | Simply Red Blue CD (1998)
Love & The Russian Winter
$6.09 Inventing his own brand of blue-eyed soul with hits like the ubiquitous Adult Radio classic "Holding Back The Years," Mick Hucknall has produced a body of work which is both a testament to his natural musical gift and an homage to the R&B classics which inspired him. Along with the ever shifting personnel of Simply Red, the sound Hucknall has created defies categorization. Shamelessly catchy, emotionally intense and always inventive, Simply Red possesses that elusive gift of being able to create instant classics. Hucknall adds another hue to an already rich palette with BLUE, which mixes originals with more than a few covers of some of his favorite ...

| | My Rough And Rowdy Ways Vol. 2 CD (1998)
Love & The Russian Winter
$14.45 Digitally remastered from the original recordings by Richard Nevins.
My Rough and Rowdy Ways, Vol. 2 features 23 songs from the '30s about badmen and hellraisers, by artists ranging from legends like Uncle Dave Macon, Mississippi John Hurt, and Big Bill Broonzy to obscure music pioneers like George Reneau and groups like the Haywood County Ramblers. The mix of white, country, and black, blues artists is one of the better in this series, the music meshing together to form a kind of audio panorama of story-songs dealing with life on the far side of law and order -- "Otto Wood the Bandit" by the Carolina Buddies, (aka Odell Smith [fiddle] and Norman Woodlief [guitar]), segues into Mississippi John Hurt's "Frankie," followed by Uncle Dave Macon's rip-roaring banjo workout "Railroadin' and Gamblin'" (anyone seeking a track ...
