As the former DJ for former eclectic dance-pop outfit Deee-Lite, Towa Tei cut his teeth on the international lifestyle the group maintained. He channels that experience in LAST CENTURY MODERN. Tei's fascination with bossa nova is elaborated on here, as is the polyglot foundation upon which his edifice rests--building blocks of polka, lounge music, R&B, and drum-n-bass. This hyper-hybrid combination of various pop forms comes totally naturally to Tei.
The first half of the album is sweet future-pop built from catchy samples and double-time drum rolls, such as "Angel," which breaks down into a dark drum-n-bass tune, and "Congratulations!" which features a sample about "the finest turntable in the world" looped over kitsch bachelor pad beats. The second half of the album is less inspired, but includes a reinterpretation of the classic "Funkin' for Jamaica." Tei has a great ear for samples and staccato rhythm. His production technique is laser accurate--he fits tiny pieces into smaller holes and stretches easy vocals over hard basslines and double-time rhythms. There's a lot of style here, plus some creative substance to move it along.

Last Century Modern album
$13.95 Whale isn't necessarily a band, it's a studio project by a pair of Swedish television personalities, who also happen to be ex-lovers. In other words, it's a highly stylized and manufactured album that is proud of its artificiality. Even more than that, Whale is about sex, particularly dirty, tawdry sex. From the blunt come-ons of "I'll ...
| | Buckethead Colma CD (1998)
Last Century Modern CD music
$11.69 For a guy who takes his sartorial cues from teenage horror flicks (he plays onstage with a weird sort of hockey mask on his face), Buckethead sure does make pretty music. It was not always thus -- his work with Praxis, for example, has often been pretty challenging. But on this solo project, on which he plays both guitar and bass and is helped out on all tracks by drummer Brain, the material is surprisingly pleasant, bordering at times on the banal. Titles like "Hills of Eternity" and "Wishing Well" are something of a giveaway -- though Brain's beats are fairly funky (and DJ Disc throws in a bit of far-off turntable scratching on a few tracks), these compositions are mostly pretty ...
| | Plaid Not For Threes CD (1998)
Last Century Modern music CDs
$13.49 As 2/3 of the magnificent Black Dog Productions, Ed Handley and Andy Turner heralded an age of lushly melodic electronic songcraft. The acrimonious fission of BDP produced Plaid and revived the dashed hopes of the duo's earlier brilliance. But, with only one (legendarily rare) album, a fistful of aliases and quiet production assignments, and a few singles in recent years, Plaid had ...

| | Alejandro Escovedo With These Hands CDs (1996) Remastered; Expanded Edition
Last Century Modern songs
$13.69 Contains an untitled hidden track following "Pyramid Of Tears".
In 1996, Alejandro Escovedo continued the artistic expansion he'd started in earnest a few years earlier with his post-Rank N File solo albums, writing songs of heartbreak and exasperation via crunching, low-slung rockers and rootsy folk ballads. The 2003 Rykodisc re-release includes an extra disc of alternate takes and demo versions that provide new avenues into the complex songs.
Following similar expensive presentations accorded to his two Watermelon albums, With These Hands, arguably Escovedo's best, most diverse, and provocative work (and his sole release on the Ryko label) receives the deluxe double-disc treatment. The sound is cleaned and tightened up a bit and the cover art reflects the original concept (which Ryko initially rejected), but the bonuses come on disc two. Kicking off with "Can't Take It," a hard-rocking studio track that was intended for the album but was cut, ...
