Harry Chapin's debut album is a smoothly put-together, if slightly musically unbalanced piece of singer/songwriter rock, unbalanced because good as everything here is, the hit, "Taxi," and the other songs on the original LP's second side somewhat overwhelm the rest of Heads & Tales. "Taxi" is so elaborately produced and arranged that it's like a feature film that clocks in at six minutes and 44 seconds; "Any Old Kind of Day" is a beautiful and unsettling confessional about an artist's unease and depression, like an East Coast equivalent to Brian Wilson's brand of personal songwriting, with a touch of James Taylor's influence and unique phrasings and sensibilities by Chapin; the epic "Dogtown" (which nearly overstays its welcome at seven and a half minutes) is a startling piece of song painting with a topical edge, which anticipated some aspects of Chapin's subsequent public commitment to progressive political causes; and "Same Sad Singer" is a haunting, romantic confessional that explores some of the same emotional territory in first-person terms that "Taxi" dealt with through characters. Side one's songs don't quite match up, though "Empty" has nice hooks and a good beat. The record holds up well in part because of its strange combination of lean production and rich sounds -- producer Jac Holzman preserved all of the elements from Chapin's stage act that he liked, and apart from some keyboard embellishment from Steve Chapin and percussion by Russ Kunkel, it's all the basic quartet: Ron Palmer on electric guitar, Tim Scott on cello, John Wallace on bass, and Harry Chapin on acoustic guitar. They sound like a lot more players, and Palmer and Wallace add more than two backup singers should be capable of bringing to the table. Chapin's singing isn't actually that good, his range and expressiveness at times very narrow, but his energy and commitment to the songs pour off the album and make this album a compelling listen 30 years later. ~ Bruce Eder Creating a niche for himself with compelling, character-driven story-songs and accessible melodies, Harry Chapin was one of the most popular singer/songwriters in an era overflowing with singer/songwriters. HEADS & TALES (1972), Chapin's debut album, announced his arrival on the scene, with the help of the hit "Taxi," one of Chapin's most memorable and enduring tunes. A first-person narrative told from the point of view of a cab driver who gives a ride to an old flame, "Taxi" sports string arrangements and the nostalgic, melancholy cast Chapin is known for. Though the rest of the record doesn't quite match up to "Taxi," it is still full of strong material. "Greyhound," a song about riding the bus cross-country, underscores the sense of drifting and displacement that characterizes much of the album, as does "Any Old Kind of Day" and "Empty," the closest thing HEADS & TALES has to a pop song. Orchestral-influenced arrangements and Chapin's ragged, emotive voice give the record the distinctive sound that would contribute to the artist's success in the years to come. The first release from the Grateful Dead's storied live vaults since Rhino Records acquired the rights to them, LIVE AT THE COW PALACE: NEW YEAR'S EVE 1976 chronicles one crazy long concert (with the Dead, is there any other kind?) that started early on December 31, 1976 and ended deep into the wee hours on January 1, 1977. The raucous atmosphere befits the proceedings, but also suggests that this show was a homecoming, as the band returned to its San Francisco for the occasion. Long criticized by the lay audience for all their meandering tendencies, this set finds the Godchaux-era Dead emphasizing their song craft by plucking hummable gems from all across their catalog. The set quickly turns into a night of essentially greatest hits as an inspired band rolls through "Sugar Magnolia," "Uncle John's Band," "Playing in the Band," and "Scarlet Begonias," among others. It would not be a live keeper, however, without some lengthy excursions, and LIVE AT THE COW PALACE features two of the band's trademark epic medleys--one of which contains a stirring Donna Godchaux vocal that easily refutes the argument that she was the band's most unnecessary member. The 41 shows the Grateful Dead played in 1976 constituted a kind of shakedown cruise for the band, which had gone on hiatus from live performing in October 1974 and given only four concerts during 1975. In the spring of 1976, they suddenly reappeared with a film, The Grateful Dead Movie, and a live album, Steal Your Face, and between June 3 and October 15 they toured the U.S. They then woodshedded for four and a half months before re-emerging again in late February 1977, having recorded a new studio album, Terrapin Station. The only interruption in those efforts came with the New Year's Eve show they played at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, chronicled here, their first such seasonal appearance in four years. The three-plus-hour performance thus marks the closing of a relatively brief chapter in the Dead's history.
