| | Led Zeppelin Song Remains The Same: The Soundtrack From The Motion Picture CD Led Zeppelin Discography of CDs
(15 Customer Reviews)
Back in the seventies, it seemed that every rock band needed to have a live concert film to commemorate their triumphant treks across America. Led Zeppelin were no exception and THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is a chronicle of Led Zeppelin on tour. Although the uninspired visual aspects of the film fail to capture the power of Led Zeppelin at their mid-seventies peak, the album manages to convey their live prowess. The twenty-six minute, hypnotic version of "Dazed and Confused" works much better here than in the film, where movie patrons would head to the concession stand ten minutes into the song. "Whole Lotta Love" gets a similar extended treatment and the results are equally impressive.
THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME also lets you hear that songs like "Stairway To Heaven" sound wonderful even without the benefit of studio overdubs. Though not perfect, this is an honest documentation of the Led Zeppelin live experience, serving as a reminder that beneath the larger-than-life myths that surrounded the group, Led Zeppelin were simply a powerful blues-influenced rock band who lived for their music.

Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The sound is vastly improved, as is the playing of the musicians....The 15 tracks showboat, strut and snarl." Kerrang (Magazine) (pp.46-47) - "The slower, bluesier 'Since I've Been Loving You' is a lick-laden tour de force..." Blender (Magazine) (p.156) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Bonham carries the day: a primeval booty monster at the top of the heap, climbing toward heaven." Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] cohesive, often thrilling live album, restoring the reputation of a once much maligned project." i like it i like the fact that there were a few songs from Houses of The Holy(fav album) that cant be found on the BBC sessions or How The West Was Won. I like the way they improvised and extended when playing live Submitted by bryan (here, US) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stellar This is Led Zeppelin moving toward their peak. The band was somewhat unhappy with the end result primarily because they had advanced so much musically by the time the soundtrack and film were released. This is the best band in the world at the time, and the record is a must-have if you enjoy their music. Submitted by ian721 (Los Angeles) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It Has Its Moments! Now before you buy this disc you must first know some things. How the West was Won Has so many things this cd dosnt have, it was also recorded earlier in this same tour, it is far better then this. The main problems with this recording are that first of all Plant sounds worn out on most of the time because this was pretty much the end of the tour when this was recorded. Second, Some of the songs are to long or over done, which I dont really mind but for some reason they only put 9 songs. You would think they would have added more. Now you may be asking why I gave it 4 stars, well here you go. All of the songs on here that were on Houses of the Holy (The Song Remains the same, The Rain Song, and No Quarter) are done very well, even Plant Sings them well. Also, Page nails all of the notes on every song on the album, and even makes them sound better then in the studio alot of the time. And This version of Stairway is done so well. | | Ryan Adams Rock N Roll CD (2003) Import; Limited Edition
Song Remains The Same: The Soundtrack From The Motion Picture album
$28.80 As the album's title indicates, this is Ryan Adams' full-on rock outing. Here the former Whiskeytown leader/enfant terrible eschews all twang in favor of indulging his alt-rock id, and the result is a whirlwind tour through rock & roll history as filtered through his trademark swagger. Adams wears his influences brazenly, like patches sewn on his jean jacket, from the T-Rex stomp of "Shallow" to the snotty Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins hybrid of "Note to Self: Don't Die" to a number of Replacements-influenced tracks, including "This Is It" and "Do Miss America." Ever the contrarian, Adams leaves the only truly subdued song on ROCK N ROLL for the title track, a move which nods towards the melancholy pop of his simultaneous release, LOVE IS HELL PART 1.
Ryan Adams is the male Courtney Love -- a hard-working hustler with impeccable taste who talks such a good game that it deliberately overshadows his music. Of course, Adams differs from Courtney in many crucial ways. For one, he's a workaholic, recording and releasing more albums than he should, which also points out that, unlike Love, he doesn't need a collaborator to help shove his songs over the goal. But the crucial similarity is that they're both students of rock history, conscious of what accounts for good taste within rock crit land, from 1973 to 2003. They don't just know the canon -- they want to be part of the canon, to the extent that it seems that they want to be the artist that all rock history has inextricably ...
