After a stint in the Boston-based combo Sugar Creek, Jonathan Edwards began his solo career with this 1971 self-titled outing. His brand of homespun tunes were perfectly matched to his emotive and soaring tenor. While he penned a majority of the album's dozen selections, Edwards reached back to former bandmates Malcolm McKinney -- author of both the upbeat lovesick lament "Don't Cry Blue" as well as the intimate "Sometimes" -- and Joe Dolce, co-writer of the happy, traveling "Athens County." But it wasn't those standout tracks that would score Edwards his first and only Top Ten hit. The acoustic and optimistic "Sunshine" struck a chord with listeners in the fall of 1971, climbing all the way to a lofty number four on the Pop Singles survey before ultimately becoming a staple of oldies radio. (The self-affirming defiance in the chorus "He can't even run his own life/I'll be damned if he'll run mine," undoubtedly touched upon the remaining vestiges of the 'Us vs. Them' mentality that permeated the concurrent generation.) The effort also includes several other excellent offerings, such as the pastoral mid-tempo "Cold Snow," with Stuart Schulman's hypnotic violin developing a hauntingly beautiful counter-refrain. "Emma" is a gorgeous ballad, sporting some affective rural-flavored piano licks from Jeff Labes. The celebratory "Shanty" wails as Edwards' harmonica brings a party atmosphere to the frolicking and energetic melody. There is a perceptible darkness running through the minor chord progressions in "The King," as Labes interjects a definite sense of drama complementing Edwards penetrating vocals. Of equal note is the guitar work of Eric Lilljequist, who provides a fuller sound in support of Edwards. The concluding "Train of Glory" serves up a final opportunity for a rousing round of the artist's emphatic mouth harp [read: harmonica] as he blows with the passion of an old-fashioned gospel revival. ~ Lindsay Planer

Really enjoy Shanty and Sunshine Good Jonathan Edwards CD. Submitted by kevinjames1 (Baton Rouge, LA , USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
stellar vocals and harmonica work Way back in the 70's when I first heard "Shanty", was the first time I wanted to become a harmonica player.
Now, 30 years later I'm in my fifth band and getting ready to perform "Shanty"for a gig next month in Pontaic, MI. I just hope I can do it justice, because that song was an anthem to my friends and I in our glory days.
Besides Shanty, I love everything about this album. The vocals are pure and a pleasure to listen to! Submitted by bassetbudz (Ortonville, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jonathan Edwards album
$11.59 Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy -- singer/songwriter Jonathan Edwards' follow-up to his self-titled debut -- was not as much of a commercial success as its predecessor. However, it is just as strong musically and features a few new twists and an increasingly countrified flavor, which Edwards himself attributes to a renewed interest in country & western artists such as George Jones and Merle Haggard. Combined with some tasty down-home contributions from occasional Stray Gator Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar), the somewhat schizophrenic nature of the album may very well have confused those looking and listening for the next "Sunshine" -- which was more akin to the pop radio-friendly acoustic folk sound of America or James Taylor. Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy does have a few pop-oriented moments, however. Primary among them is the opening track, "Stop and Start It All Again," a spry rocker that could easily have fit onto the first album. "It's a Beautiful Day" likewise continues much in the standard of the first album. Those notable exceptions aside, Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy is more laid-back, with a sound and delivery ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Jonathan Edwards CD music
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore ...

Jonathan Edwards music CDs
$18.99 This just doesn't have the feel of a Jonathan Edwards album. It could be blamed on the relatively few Edwards originals, which leave the feeling that the creation of this record was more or less removed from the artist's hands. It's a pleasant enough collection, especially if you ever wondered what Jonathan Edwards would sound like singing other songwriters's songs. (His version of "Never Together" predates Carlene Carter's near hit by a year.) Still, if this is your first exposure to this artist, you may be tempted to skip the rest of his work and that would be a major mistake. ~ Jim Worbois
Jonathan Edwards was born in Minnesota and played his first music on piano, taking a few lessons from the lady who lived next door and then learning by ear.He picked up guitar in high school in the early 60s. \"I started on a $29 guitar and immediately started putting a band together, writing songs and learning all the contemporary folk songs of the time\", he recalls. \"I just loved it, loved everything about it, loved being in front of people playing music.\".He studied art in college but continued to play music. \"I started getting electric about the time Dylan did, doing electric folk music. I joined bands by saying \'Can I be in your band?\', and they\'d ask, \'What do you play?\', ...
| | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
Jonathan Edwards songs
$7.59 Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On the Air," and "All Lovers are Deranged," are distinguished by lyrics written by Pete Townshend, and "Blue Light" is an attempt at funk with a Floydian flavor. Gilmour's strength at ballad writing is evidenced in "Out of the Blue," while the ...
| | David Gilmour CD (1978) Remastered
Jonathan Edwards album
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost ...
