Personnel: Billy Cobham (percussion); Joe Farrell (soprano & alto saxophone, flute); Jimmy Owens (flugelhorn, trumpet); Jan Hammer (piano, electric piano, Moog synthesizer); John Tropea, Tommy Bolin (guitar); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Lee Sklar (electric bass); Ray Barretto (congas). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York on May 14-16, 1973. Drummer Billy Cobham was fresh from his success with the Mahavishnu Orchestra when he recorded his debut album, which is still his best. Most of the selections showcase Cobham in a quartet with keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin, and electric bassist Lee Sklar. Two other numbers include Joe Farrell on flute and soprano and trumpeter Jimmy Owens with guitarist John Tropea, Hammer, bassist Ron Carter, and Ray Barretto on congas. The generally high-quality compositions (which include "Red Baron") make this fusion set a standout, a strong mixture of rock-ish rhythms and jazz improvising. ~ Scott Yanow

Billy Cobham Spectrum Songs Spectrum Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Oldtimer Delving Into History & Sharing the Wealth For something made in 1973, it plays mighty fine today! That's why I bought 5 copies so I could pass it around to youngsters who are too young to know what they missed!! I even gave it to some Latin rock band friends to listen to and work bits and pieces into their own brand of music. They love it!
Spectrum, Billy Cobham's debut jazz/fusion/rock compilation is timeless for the sounds, the energy and its attitude! At a time when rock & roll was flying, traditional jazz was begining to slow in appeal so traditionalists began the "fusion" era and Spectrum really hit the mark to please everyone with the old jazz, new funk and fusion with current day Hendrix and Jeff Beck type hard-driving guitar rifts from Tommy Bollin. You can't go wrong with this bit of music Americana. Submitted by Dick Critelli (Houston, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
