FACE VALUE contains videos, live performances and home movies principally centered on the making of the 1981 album of the same name. The risk that Phil Collins took in displaying painful lyrics at an obviously harrowing time could have been taken as self-indulgence, but 18 years on this album is still seen as his best and most assured. The Genesis drummer displayed dynamic arrangements ('In The Air Tonight'), melancholy piano ('You Know What I Mean') and Philadelphia soul ('I Missed Again'), and wrapped up with a cover of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' at which even John Lennon would have tipped his hat. After this album Collins embarked on an extraordinarily busy career that included a rejuvenated Genesis, film roles and huge solo success. ...See Full Description

| Wonderful! This is truly Phil Collins at his best! The album was inspired by a recent divorce so it's full of beautiful pain and amazing production. Everything on here is brilliant! You should also check out Frida's (brunette from ABBA) 'Something's Going On' cd from 1982. It's recently been remastered and was produced by Phil. He also plays the drums, sings background vocals AND does a duet with her on "Here We'll Stay"! The best part of the album is her cover of "You Know What I Mean", which is also on this Phil Collins album. She had just recently went through a divorce herself and was so moved by this album that she hired Phil to work with her. It really says something when a member of ABBA, possibly the world's greatest pop bands of all time, calls you up to produce an album! WAY TO GO PHIL!!! By Samm (Indiana, USA) |
| How many good memories brings me this album! Ah, the 80's, what a decade! So many good artists. And Phil Collins is certainly one of them! His first solo effort is nothing more than perfect! Musically is gold! Listen to In The Air Tonight, or something like "Droned", "Hand In Hand" and figure it out! That's good music! The remake of "Behind The Lines", from Genesis is awesome, as well. This one was the first of a serie of great albums like Hello I Must Be Going, No Jacket Required and But Seriously, that he released on the 80's! You'll be amazed with the musical experience that you'll have here! I loved this album since the first time I heard, and I still love it! There's also a song Phil made in tribute to John Lennon, it's "Tomorrow Never Knows", that is excellent! Buy it, it's an essential album in the collection of everyone that likes great music! | His best album... YES! Phil Collins wrote a good album. (for all those Phil haters). To be honest he was never a bad artitist but as well not the best. He means well musically but i think starting with "Sussudio" he started to slip with choosing what to release. Anyway, this album is a nice listen. By Illegal Alien (Mars, Space) |
