Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (acoustic & electric violins, organ, synthesizer); Allan Zavod (piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer); Peter Maunu (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer); Joaquin Lievano (acoustic & electric guitars); Ralphe Armstrong (electric bass); Casey Scheuerell (drums, percussion). Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood and Chateau Recorders, North Hollywood, California. Cosmic Messenger is more elegant, European-flavored jazz-rock from the French virtuoso Jean-Luc Ponty, and pretty much in the same mold as his previous Atlantic albums but with gradually tightening control over every parameter of performance. Ponty's analog-delay special effects on the title track are spectacular, and the album is loaded more than ever with revolving electronic arpeggios as Ponty's own involvement with the ARP synthesizer grows. But there is still plenty of his fluid, slippery electric violin soloing to be heard within the tight structures of these pieces, and the tunes themselves are often pretty good. In addition, this fusion express finds its way into the funk on "The Art of Happiness," and there are some tricky rhythmic experiments on some tunes. ~ Richard S. Ginell COSMIC MESSENGER is certainly more "cosmic" than Ponty's previous releases, thanks to the violinist's more pronounced use of synthesizer and the enlisting of Allan Zavod as his main keyboardist. The album finds Ponty exacting the energized fundamentals of rock while simultaneously fleshing out his already expanding sound palette. With exuberant, atmospheric violin etchings and exciting runs of drums and bass underpinning Zavod's guitar thrusts, "Don't Let the World Pass You By" summarizes the Ponty songbook. Released at the end of the '70s and executed with a sophisticated degree of polish and poise, COSMIC MESSENGER moves along with the inertia of a locomotive. The album remains a sparkling gem in Ponty's crown.

Cosmic Messenger Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Awsome Performance, Great recording. This is in my opinion the best album by Jean-Luc Ponty. The songs are engaging and the performances are spectacular. Not only is the Violin work outstanding, but the two guitarists are also world class, as well as the rest of the band. I have several copies of this recording, including a half speed mastered LP. The CD was very well mastered, and reproduces the original nicely. I would recomend this CD to anyone who likes jazz and Rock. Submitted by bburkard (Shirley, New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of the world's best jazz violinists! It is hard to classify JLP's music; jazz, rock, fusion,... But this album extracts the best from each style. This classic should appeal to a wide range of listeners (who like to play hard-charging music).
While JLP is in another world when it comes to violinists, I sometimes think the inspired guitar and bass solos actually steal the show. Just incredible! While this work plays well very loud and truly ROCKS, listen to the true virtuosity of the ensemble and you'll agree that this is Jazz/Rock fusion at its best. This is a must have...along with JLP's "Imaginary Voyage". Submitted by a reviewer (Omaha, NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classically Funky Jazzy Rock As music evolved in America alot of people took on the attitude of Scientist; experimenting, testing, grafting, surgically recombining to create unique hybrids. Too often these creations were Frankensteins - massive, lumbering assemblages, and not quite seamless, human. On Cosmic Messenger Jazz, Funk, Rock, and Classical are all expertly, elegantly fused in an amazingly fluid unity. It is a virtouso performance of what's best about music. Rythm and percussion so tightly bound, laying down thunderous grooves over, around and thru which Jean-Luc rockets, gallops, marches, bops, drifts, glides, and floats. Its a true voyage. Everyone should get a chance to take this mighty trip. Submitted by eddiez61 (Collingswood, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
