Despite the title, this release is more subdued than its predecessors on the shelves, more tightly controlled, more conventional in instrumentation. Jean-Luc Ponty temporarily pulls back on electronic display for its own sake, even permitting some acoustic instruments to take the fore, and the recorded sound is drier and less lustrous. Nevertheless, Ponty's urbane Euro-sensibility can still be felt strongly in these carefully conceived and "orchestrated" jazz-rock compositions for his six-piece group. "Beach Girl," with its locomotive-driven chorus surrounded by folk-like passages, is the most memorable tune of the lot. If you can overlook the dated timbres of the ARP (a long-defunct company) synthesizers and the flat acoustics that place this music squarely within its decade, this music can still give pleasure to today's CD fans. ~ Richard S. Ginell

Taste For Passion album
$5.95 Ponty kicked off the '80s with an anomalous jolt of electronicized jazz funk. Fusion had begun to recede into small, underground pockets, hiding its head in fear, overwhelmed by bad muzak and the rejuvenation of tepid traditionalism. Experimentalism was left to other genres, but Ponty plowed on, updating his sound to reflect the changing technological flavors of the time. On CIVILIZED EVIL, he let his obvious love for electronics and science fiction advance to the fore.

| | Jean-Luc Ponty Imaginary Voyage CD (1976)
Taste For Passion CD music
$5.95 As of 1976, Jean-Luc Ponty's variations on the Mahavishnu Orchestra theme were still fresh and imaginative, cast in a distinctively different, more lyrical, more controlled framework. For Imaginary Voyage, Ponty's instrumental lineup is identical to that of Mahavishnu -- electric violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums -- ...

| | Jean-Luc Ponty Mystical Adventures CD (1981)
Taste For Passion songs
$5.95 Mystical Adventures expands Jean-Luc Ponty's palette slightly with the introduction of part-time percussionist Paulinho Da Costa and the use of a vocoder on a couple of tracks. Otherwise, it's the same mixture of mildly intoxicating arpeggios and flights of fancy that you'd find in various amounts on any Ponty album from this period. The five-part suite "Mystical Adventures" is a softer sibling to the earlier "Imaginary Voyage," utilizing vaguely Spanish themes and occasionally ambient pairings of organ and synthesizer to create a work similar to Chick Corea's "Touchstone." While in the course of its 20 minutes some interesting ideas are explored on the first side of music, the real showstoppers are a cover of Stevie Wonder's "As" and the closing "Jig." These ...
