The Long Island via New Orleans, trio Zebra broke from the gate with their eponymous first release, a record that was, at the time, one of Atlantic Records' fastest-selling debuts ever. Tapping into the vacuum left by Led Zeppelin's breakup, lead singer Randy Jackson and company gave the masses a good, healthy dose of Zeppelin-like hard rock. True, they are a pale imitation of their icons, but they pack enough requisite crunch into the album's nine tracks to make Zebra an enjoyable listen. The use of synthesizer dates the album, but they did manage to score a pair of radio hits with the driving "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind the Door?" which builds to a respectably thunderous climax. Jackson manages to do a decent approximation of Robert Plant's primal howl, although some of the lyrics ("The la la Song," "Take Your Fingers From My Hair") are embarrassingly self-conscious in their attempt to strive for the proper mix of mysticism and depth. ~ Tom Demalon

Zebra: Randy Jackson (vocals, guitar); Felix Hanneman (bass, keyboards, vocals); Guy Gelso (drums, vocals).

4 stars Must have for 80'2 R & R! ! !
I bought this album originally on LP. Over the years liquidated ALL LPs and went CD. Lost this album in the change. About forgot about them but couldn't get the signature lines of "Who's Behind The Door" out of my head. FINALLY the title clicked and the band name soon followed. If you collect CD's as I do this album is a must have. I have better than 3000 discs currnetly and this one is one of my favorites.

4 stars Classic classic?
I remember when this album was originally released. It sounded older than the time, 1983. Now, re-discovering the CD, I realize several of the songs were written in the late 70's. In '83, listening to "Who's Behind The Door", we KNEW we were listening to an instant classic. Sometimes Randy's not-so-bad attempt to emulate Robert Plant borders on Frankie Valli but altogether, not bad. I remember reading an interview with these guys. Prior to the record deal, they were a LedZepp tribute band which is most obvious in the 3rd track, the upbeat "Slow Down". I recommend this disc. I'm especially ecstatic that I was able to find it at CD Universe.... or, ANYwhere, for that matter.

5 stars Excellent 80's rock/metal
This is an awesome 80's rock/metal cd from a very talented but short lived band. Guitar work is awesome and the vocals unique and distinct.

Steeler CD  (1983)

Zebra album
CD $14.65  4.4 stars Audio Samples
On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain greater notoriety in the context of Alcatrazz and his own band Rising Force -- was nothing short of a revolution in guitar circles at the time of Steeler's release. While other rock guitarists were still clamoring to figure out Eddie Van Halen's tricks, Malmsteen's shocking virtuosity -- based on classical music as much as rock -- was something for which few were prepared. The story goes that Malmsteen was flown in at the last minute by producer Mike Varney to finish the album after the songs had already been written (by bandleader/lead singer Ron Keel) and recorded; Malmsteen quickly added his tracks and Steeler was released. Obviously, cliché-ridden songs like "On the Rox," "Born to Rock," and "Backseat Driver" -- based on predictable rock chord ...

CD $9.69  4.5 stars Top 500
The second LP from Gamma, an unlikely hard rock group on Elektra Records, features future Robin Trower vocalist Davey Pattison doing his best to sound like Bad Company during Paul Rodgers' "Rock & Roll Fantasy" period. With Jim Alcivar on synthesizer and Denny Carmassi on drums, you have a goodly portion of the band Montrose, since the guitarist/producer is the guiding hand behind this project. "Skin and Bone" might as well be Bad Company, while the cover of Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air" misses the mark slightly. The revolutionary theme of that great tune from the film The Strawberry Statement gets lost in the translation and doesn't have Pete Townshend's clever production. Though the attempt is interesting enough, memories of the original are so strong that this version is a bit of a letdown, the risk of treading on hallowed ground snagging the group here. Ronnie Montrose, Alcivar, and Pattison combine to write the leadoff track, "Mean Streak," which distorts the "Jumpin' Jack Flash riff just enough to create something new with a metal edge. "Four Horsemen" is Black Sabbath with '80s polish, while "Dirty City" goes back to the Ken Scott sound of the first Gamma LP, copying Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" from two years earlier. Ten ...

CD $10.49  4.2 stars Top 500
Kicking off with their raison d'etre "Rock 'n' Roll Party in the Street," Offering proved to be the moment of glory for Florida's Axe. That single remains a great slice of heartland party rock, and the rest of the record ably falls in line. While the quaint "Video Inspiration" berates artificial imagery, "Jennifer" serenades a screen star; but Axe doesn't let such cerebral quandaries get in the way of booty-shaking boogie like the smoking run-through of Montrose's "I Got the Fire" (later covered by Iron Maiden and Rest in Pieces) and the summer-in-the-city riot selection "Burn the City Down." "Holdin' On" falls in the ol' reliable "love 'em and leave 'em" category while "Now or Never" is the kind of blatant Top 40 bid heavy bands used to sneak onto records that resulted in the twilight era of AOR, which backfired into groups attempting to be as intense as their album artwork and spurning the radio. Axe offers an innocent, innocuous, ...

Neo-classic rockers Zebra return from hibernation with their first studio recording in 17 years. Unlike most bands, however, the trio remained active, touring the East Coast, with mastermind Randy Jackson fostering some low-key side projects (China Rain, Sign). Here and now, the one-two triumph of openers "Arabian Nights" and "Light of My Love" shows the boys haven't missed a trick since the halcyon daze of '80s AOR. As in Zebra's signature single, "Who's Behind the Door," Jackson still ponders deep thoughts like "Why" (a veritable "Blackbird" rewrite) and "Who Am I" (a bizarre take on the Bible with animal rights sentiments similar to the earlier FM chestnut "Bears"). And only Jackson could create a cosmic, comic crack like "So I Dance." Admittedly, the crass "Free" stands as one of his weaker moments, but Jackson soars everywhere else ...

Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003. With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious examples, like "We Could Be Together," first single "Crazy Nights," and the power ballad "Never Change Your Mind," the band doesn't seem at all self-conscious about this transition. A few all-out headbangers like "Get Away" and "Clockwork Toy" are hammered out for good measure, but it's excellent tracks like "Heavy Chains," "The Lines Are Down," and "No Way Out" ...

The 1990s gave listeners an abundance of artists (some European, some American) who embraced the electro-goth sound -- that is, goth rock that is heavily electronic and favors a lot of high-tech studio maneuvers. Electro-goth (which can sound great in clubs, especially S&M/bondage clubs) doesn't require a full-fledged band; an electro-goth act can easily consist of nothing but a vocalist and a producer/programmer. But there are other goths who prefer a more guitar-based, hard-rocking approach -- and for them, goth metal can be an attractive option. Not all guitar-based goth music is goth metal, but goth metal is certainly a valuable part of guitar-based goth. And those who like their goth with a lot of loud, crunching guitar can't go wrong with Entwine's Dieversity, which is relevant to both goth metal and goth rock. ...

"Mirrors" has a Pop/Rock vibe, with strong vocals, swirling lush sounds with projection of one's own feelings or emotional state. Vicarious experiences of thoughts, past and present.Poppy started her singing career at the age of 11 when she realized that she had a strong rather mature voice for a girl her age, she undertook intensive singing lessons, which strengthened her vocal range well into her teenage years and beyond. She then became a member of the Police Youth Clubs and a representative for her local area where she performed for many functions.. Including her first major performance at the age of 17 for the International Police Olympics which was hosted in Sydney at the Entertainment Centre in 1988, which was televised live worldwide, and attended by 60,000 people ! Alongside Julie Anthony, which she had the privilege of meeting and being praised for her rendition of John Farnhams "You're The Voice' by her. Having 2yrs previously won 1986 Star Search a popular talent show of the time on national television. She then signed a contract with her singing teacher who then became her manager at the young age of 17, she was anup and rising entertainer with a huge future.. Poppy then moved to Bunderberg in Qld, with her manager and her husband.. Where she continued to entertain people in various clubs, pubs, resorts and private functions for well to do people of social standing, and political members dinners who had heard of Poppy and wanted her for their entertainment. Her satisfaction was making people smile and forget their predicaments even for a little while... She naturally makes people happy and feel good about themselves! While living in Bunderberg she also loved performing intheatre restaurants playing various roles from well known musicals.. With raving revues, every week! She also got the opportunity to travel to Brisbane tosupport international star Stevie Nicks on her 1988 world tour... Which though short lived due to Stevie's illness at the time.. And having to cancel her remaining shows... It was a big thrill to have been chosen for a short time.Mr Edwin Duff a well know jazz entertainer from the States who was visiting Australia at the time.. And was a special guest for the local Jazz festival held in Penrith in September 88, sponsored by the Youth Club movement at the time... Poppy had just finished singing 'The Lady is A Tramp' when Mr Duff went out of his way to personally introduce himself to her... And asked Poppy whether she had a manager or agent that he can talk to with regards to some international session work/ backing vocals with himself on his next album, and Ms Melissa Manchester. All negotiations done and 3wks later, Poppy found herself along with her manager on United Airlines flight 754 to The Big Apple... New ...
