Genesis: Mike Rutherford (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Banks (vocals, keyboards); Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at The Farm, Surrey, England in 1983. Moments of Genesis are as spooky and arty as those on Abacab -- in particular, there's the tortured howl of "Mama," uncannily reminiscent of Phil Collins' Face Value, and the two-part "Second Home by the Sea" -- but this eponymous 1983 album is indeed a rebirth, as so many self-titled albums delivered in the thick of a band's career often are. Here the art rock functions as coloring to the pop songs, unlike on Abacab and Duke, where the reverse is true. Some of this may be covering their bets -- to ensure that the longtime fans didn't jump ship, they gave them a bit of art -- some of it may be that the band just couldn't leave prog behind, but the end result is the same: as of this record, Genesis was now primarily a pop band. Anybody who paid attention to "Misunderstanding" and "No Reply at All" could tell that this was a good pop band, primarily thanks to the rapidly escalating confidence of Phil Collins, but Genesis illustrates just how good they could be, by balancing such sleek, pulsating pop tunes as "That's All" with a newfound touch for aching ballads, as on "Taking It All Too Hard." They still rocked -- "Just a Job to Do" has an almost nasty edge to its propulsion -- and they could still get too silly as on "Illegal Alien," where Phil's Speedy Gonzalez accident is an outright embarrassment (although in some ways it's not all that far removed from his Artful Dodger accent on the previous album's "Who Dunnit?"), and that's why the album doesn't quite gel. It has a little bit too much of everything -- too much pop, too much art, too much silliness -- so it doesn't pull together, but if taken individually, most of these moments are very strong, testaments to the increasing confidence and pop power of the trio, even if it's not quite what longtime fans might care to hear. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Ever since Genesis was reduced down to the trio of Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, the former prog-rock giants had made a concerted effort to streamline their music into more bite-sized pop portions. GENESIS was an important bridge to this goal. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Genesis' prosperity, along with the solo success of individual members (particularly Collins) meant that GENESIS became part of a decade-long cycle in which band album releases alternated with those by Phil Collins. Driven by Banks' simple keyboard lines, "That's All" became the album's first hit and first of three videos shot for MTV. The other two, the ominous "Mama" and the humorous "Illegal Alien" both helped bolster the band's pop visibility. Although the Jan Hammer-flavored "Just a Job to Do" wasn't made into a video, this hard-driving song was later incorporated into an episode of the television program Miami Vice. Despite the obvious stylistic changes, art-rock elements still popped up particularly in "Home By the Sea" and the sequel, "Second Home By the Sea."Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...Entirely unrecognizable from Gabriel-era Genesis, the lead single 'Mama' is based around the bleakly distorted drum machine....Further chart success comes courtesy of 'That's All' and 'Illegal Alien'..." Record Collector (magazine) (pp.83-84) - "4 stars out of 5 -- "1983's eponymous effort boasts classic pop-rock such as the opening 'Mama' and 'Just A Job To Do'..." "Every song on this album is great. You'll love it! Oh btw, please ignore the user from CA... This person seems to have nothing else better to do in life, but to sit around and type negative, pointless reviews, using random, multiple names to lower the rating of this album. I've seen this same person do the same thing to other Genesis albums, when Phil Collins was the frontman. It seems to me that this certain person is jealous and pissed off, because Phil Collins made Genesis a better and more successful band." Submitted by **** the poser from CA! Best Genesis album ever! Every song on this album is great. You'll love it!

The only thing Peter Gabriel did better than Phil Collins was drugs. Drugs get you no where! Submitted by Walter (Old Town, ME, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 12 of 15 found this helpful.
I agree with Eric from Milwaukee, WI "....than that stuff in the 70s with Peter Gabriel. Thank you Phil, Mike, & Tony for finally making music that makes sense."
It's just that simple. :) Submitted by James Henderson (Dover, DE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 12 of 15 found this helpful.
Mama Silver Rainbow When I listen to this album I re-live the concert. They way these three guys perform is amazing, along with the talents of Daryl Steurmer, Chester Thomson. The drum duet with Phil and Chester was just amazing. I enjoyed this album very much. Eight out of the nine songs, Illegal Alien just didn't do it for me. You Know..... I think that it is funny that people don't consider Genesis a "real band" once Peter Gabriel left, and that their music is crap. Hello!!! It's not the band's fault that Peter Gabriel has an over-blown ego! They did the best with what they had, and espically the fact that they became a trio, how can you complain. What kind of music have you ever written?! Yeah, that's right, you got no room to talk until you become a musician-LIKE ME!!! I have been in the music world for 35 years, and I fail to see any fault with their works.....so maybe ya'll shouldn't judge them too harshly....when you can write a good song, then I'll respect your opinion, but until then, button your lips! Genesis
$17.57 Deluxe Edition
Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, ...

Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." | | Very Best Of Otis Redding CD (1992)
Genesis
$7.79 Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch. Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Carla Thomas (vocals). Liner Note Author: Kevin Phinney. The Very Best of Otis Redding wasn't the first Otis Redding compilation but it is the best of the single-disc collections, distilling the high points across his career (up thru the posthumous hits "(Sitting' On) The Dock of the Bay" and the heartbreaking "I've Got Dreams to Remember") in 16 tracks, every one a musical milestone and a soul music high-point of one kind or another. Although aimed at the casual listener and the neophyte fan, there are some astonishing realizations to be had in listening to this disc and looking at the chart placements of the early sides, and realizing just how uniform his musical influence is -- "These Arms of Mine" and, especially, "Pain In My Heart," from ...

| | Howls, Raps And Roars: Recordings From The San Francisco Poetry Renaissance CDs (1993)
Genesis
$37.45 HOWLS, RAPS & ROARS is a 4-CD box set compiled and annotated by Ann Charters containing Beat Generation's spoken word recordings made between 1958-69. In addition to masterworks like Ginsberg's "Howl" (heard in its entirety) and Kenneth Rexroth's "Thou Shalt Not Kill," this set presents previously unreleased recordings by Gregory Corso and Peter Orlovsky, as well as excerpts from the "Mad Mammoth Monster Poetry Readings" of 1959 and 1963. The subtitle -- "recordings from the San Francisco poetry renaissance" -- perfectly places in context the vitality of the contents of this multi-disc box set. While the Bay Area based Fantasy label is primarily known for its uncompromising and otherwise groundbreaking jazz releases, they were also home to some of the Beat Generations most prolific and genre defining figures. This collection gathers over four hours of recordings documented during the height of the Cold War in the late '50s and early '60s, historically reflecting the world as interpreted by such freewheelin' thinkers as Lew Welch, Michael McClure, David Meltzer, Kenneth Rexroth, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg. Under the influence and careful annotation of Ann Charters -- who is perhaps best known in the literary community for her valiant efforts as editor of the Portable Beat Reader -- Howls, Raps & Roars (1993) revisits some of America's most brilliant spoken-word recordings and aurally stimulating recitations borne of the tremendously prolific mid-century poetry scene. In addition to the definitively earnest efforts of the afore mentioned authors, also prominently featured on this collection is the work of comedian and social commentator Lenny Bruce -- who commences the set with over an hour's worth of his most profound recordings for Fantasy. His works -- most especially the irony-laden "Shorty Petterstein Interview" and equally strident "How To Relax Your Coloured Friends At Parties" are as over the top and deliciously ironic in the 21st century as they most assuredly were in the heart of the previous one. Also ...

Genesis
$16.29 Three years after their formation, Skanic finally released this, their debut album. Taking 2 Tone down exciting new avenues, the San Diego area group unleashes a baker's dozen of upbeat tracks, filled to the brim with brass and driven by compulsive ska and reggae rhythms. Many of the group's songs boast a dark, angry edge that defined the Specials' sound, particularly noticeable on "Eyesore," albeit in a rockier context, and "Temper," but also pooling around "Yard Duty" and "Don't Dance Too Hard," both of which blend in a barreling exuberance that tips a porkpie hat to Madness as well. But with that full brass section flashing around and strutting through the arrangements, Skanic incorporate a jazzy flair reminiscent of the Skatalites, a styling fabulously showcased on "Love City" and ...
