Originally released in 1988, Under the Influence is another confident, if unremarkable Overkill recording. Highlights include the punk-ish "Overkill III (Under the Influence)," as well as trademark pseudo-thrash numbers like "Shred," "Never Say Never," and the minor hit single/video "Hello From the Gutter." One subtle, but very consistent problem with Overkill's brutal riffing sticks out just a little bit more than usual on Under the Influence. That is, the clanky ringing and exaggerated attack of bassist D.D. Verni's instrument. Verni bogs down the group's sound, weakening Overkill's otherwise tight and unified rhythmic signature. As usual, the real problem with Under the Influence is vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth's overdone vocals. Ellsworth is a singer of rare ability, but his cartoon approach takes Overkill way over the top, eroding the band's technically impressive, musical base. But despite this consistent challenge to their listenability, Overkill still cranks out their own brand of first-class metal on Under the Influence, a record that, while respectable, might only interest the most passionate fans of the band. ~ Vincent Jeffries

All the songs are very rough except "Hello From The Gutter" that's why it was selected for a video.
Overall all the songs are cool.
Check out "Shred", "Overkill III", "Drunken Wisdom" and you will be amazed. Submitted by max_cantu (Monterrey, México) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dude This album, this BAND, every SONG just makes me want to get up from the computer and go freaking rock out on my guitar even though I've yet to obtain enough talent. Holy freaking HELL this is FREAKING GREAT! Ahem, forgive that outburst Submitted by Blah (Fayettville, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Solid thrash I would actually give this album 3 and 1/2 stars if I could, but I went with 4. Though UTF may be great thrash, it has several glaring problems: 1. D.D.'s bass is too loud and clanky, it drags down the music, 2. the songwriting suffers here, a couple songs sound like a bunch of riffs thrown together, like Mad Gone World, while others are too repetetive like Brainfade, and 3. Blitz is still finding his way as a singer, he's too screechy at times. However, there's still some excellent thrash on here, like Hello From The Gutter, Shred, and Drunken Wisdom. UTF is a necessity for any Overkill fan, and not a bad choice for any fan of thrash metal either. Submitted by mcsavage (Pittsburgh, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ONE OF OVERKILL'S GREATEST I have all of Overkill's stuff, but I would have to say that this one is probably their all-time best. It's from their early, really super-aggressive years where every song is just insanely fast and Blitz really belts it out. This one has one of their most commercial hits, "Hello From the Gutter", along with a lot of other great tracks. Bobby Gustafson and D.D. Verni rule. The lyrics are also very intelligent, typical metal themes. If you like thrash, this is a must-have. Submitted by a reviewer (Wisconsin) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$17.05 TOM GOSS BREATHES, SPEAKS AND ACHES LIKE NEVER BEFORE ON - BACK TO LOVE -Washington DC Based Singer/Songwriter Builds on Success of 2008’s RiseWashington DC—Every singer/songwriter uses life experiences to help shape their own musical style and direction. For Washington DC based Tom Goss, that method has been taken to another level on his latest album, Back To Love (April 7, 2009). Produced by Mike Ofca, Back To Love is a collection of edgy alt/pop songs that are literally about love—not always romantic love, but the many faces of love. He has built on the success of his first national tour with acclaimed singer/songwriter Eric Himan in 2008, as well as the production and release of his first video, which was featured nationally and eventually rose to #2 on MTV LOGO’s The Click List.“I wanted to create something that was instantly accessible,” says Goss. “Something that would touch a wide audience, and something that was fast and clean but also carried a concrete message.” And he teamed up with Ofca, because, as he says, “I love what he can do. He took the songs and added depth and edge -- layers of guitars, monster drums, and a real respect for each individual song at its core.”As for those songs, the months Goss spent on the road with Himan in 2008 fueled his songwriting into something more personal and profound, influenced by some of his favorite artists, including Ben Folds, David Gray, Dave Matthews, Sufjan Stevens, Paolo Nutini and The Beatles. In addition, the songs are a way that Goss has opened up about his own romantic love. As a gay man, he wanted to deliver a message about societal and religious perceptions of what love means to a gay person, as well as his family’s love and failed love, including the divorce of his parents. Goss also learned a lot from his recently deceased grandfather, whom he says loved his grandmother “more than I have ever seen anyone love.” He adds that “Back To Love breathes speaks, and aches like nothing I have ever done before.”Goss, who grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, moved to DC in 2004 to enter Catholic seminary in hopes of becoming a priest. After that didn’t go as planned, Goss later found himself through his charity work and through his partner, and began to make music a full-time ambition. His debut, album, Naked Without, was released in 2006 and was followed by Rise in January 2008. ...
