Since Winger was marketed largely on the looks of lead singer Kip Winger, and since their sleazy rockers and lovelorn ballads cover the same old pop-metal territory, the band's high-quality musicianship tended to get overlooked. Guitarist Reb Beach earned wide praise from other musicians, and he, ex-Dixie Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein, and keyboardist Paul Taylor bring a distinct progressive metal influence to many of the tunes on Winger. Even if the lyrics are standard issue, the album is impeccably composed, crafted, and played, with melodies, riffs, and guitar solos taking off in unexpected directions and keeping the listener slightly off balance -- no easy task in the cookie-cutter hair metal genre. The only misstep is an overdone, tight-assed, totally misguided recasting of "Purple Haze." Otherwise, Winger is a surprisingly accomplished debut. ~ Steve Huey
Winger: Kip Winger (vocals, bass); Paul Taylor (guitar, keyboards); Reb Beach (guitar); Rod Morgenstein (drums, percussion).
Winger Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The start of something special These guys were new to me no long ago. Phenomenal!! Winger's debut is absolutely fantastic! There are no highlights of this album to me, as all tracks are just as great as each other. From ballads as without the night, virtuoso rock on seventeen & headed for a heartbreak. theres solid musicianship on every track, and even a cover of the classic purple haze! If u can recognise good music, then Winger, without a doubt should be in your cd collection! Reb Beach, Kip Winger, Rod Morgenstein and Paul taylor have done a fantasic job here. so go on buy, buy, buy!! Submitted by sjussun (Manchester UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
Winger album
$7.59 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand up next to "Sweet Leaf" and "Symptom Of The Universe" as an archetype of hard rock. The trippy guitar in "Ghost Behind My Eyes" and "Denial" are not some young Ozzy-wannabe going for a retro sound--this man was there, "Planet Caravan"ing.
Still, this heavy metal daddy in touch with his roots is also hip to the genre's latest sound. OZZMOSIS has a live, up-front feeling, thanks to producer Michael Beinhorn (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden). Zakk Wylde's huge, raw guitar also plays a major role. He provides scorching solos, lush textures and juicy ...
| | Ozzy Osbourne The Ozzman Cometh CD (2002)
Winger CD music
$9.69 THE OZZMAN COMETH is a single CD collection of hits, previously unavailable recordings and one new track. Previously included a limited edition second disc containing 2 of the 4 previously unavailable recordings as well as an interview with Ozzy Osbourne.
As if we needed another reason to believe that Ozzy Osbourne is God, along comes THE OZZMAN COMETH, a double CD retrospective of one of the most enduring and influential figures in heavy metal. Consisting mostly of his post-Black Sabbath solo work as well as a live version of "Paranoid," this collection's biggest asset is the so-called "basement tapes," never-before-heard rehearsal tapes of four classic Sabbath songs. Dating back to 1970, "Black Sabbath" and "War Pigs" are the ...

| | Cowboy Junkies Trinity Session CD (1988)
Winger songs
$7.59 Recorded live at The Church Of The Holy Trinity, Toronto, Canada on November 27, 1987.
Formed in Toronto by siblings Micheal, Peter, and Margo Timmins, The Cowboy Junkies purvey a surreal brand of moody, slow motion country music. THE TRINITY SESSIONS was recorded with a single microphone in Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity (hence the title), an engineering circumstance that has everything to do with the record's stark, spacious atmosphere. Bass and lightly brushed drums provide a soft, pulsating background, while ...

Winger album

| | Julie London Calendar Girl/Your Number Please CD (1997) (Import)
Winger CD music
$14.45 "Cool" pop vocalist Julie London is featured on this twofer, which pairs her albums CALENDAR GIRL and YOUR NUMBER PLEASE. "June in January," "Making Whoopie," and "This October" are among the tracks.
It's common practice for the British wing of EMI to release their back catalog of vocal jazz and easy listening albums of the '50s and '60s on budget-priced two-for-one compact discs. These CDs aren't aimed at the American market, but the discs are widely available throughout North America, often at the same budget price. This is good news for fans of Julie London, who until recently has been neglected in the digital age. EMI usually couples albums together that have a musical theme (travel, ballads, Latin drums, etc.), but here they've chosen to collate two of London's more sensual album covers under one plastic CD slipcover. Thankfully, the cheesecake photos of London are only the icing on the cake and the music on each of the original albums is well worth owning, even if they have less jazz content than the best of her releases. Calendar Girl is a concept album involving love lost and found for each month of the year, while Your Number Please... is a tribute to such male singers as Frank Sinatra and Mel Tormé. Each of the original out ...

$8.29 | | Marsalis Music Honors Jimmy Cobb CD (2006)
Winger music CDs
$15.05 As of this writing, the Marsalis Music Honors series has just two recordings in its catalog: one of Michael Carvin, and one of Jimmy Cobb. Produced by Branford Marsalis, Marsalis Music Honors Jimmy Cobb was recorded just after Cobb's 75th birthday in 2005. The band included pianist Ellis Marsalis, Australian saxophonist Andrew Speight, and the young bassist Orlando LeFleming. Four of Cobb's tunes appear here, including the lovely ballad "Eleanor (Sister Cobb)," written for his wife; "W.K.," a swinging tribute to his rhythm section partner in the Miles Davis band, the laid-back whispering cymbals and snare on "Composition 101," and the sprightly set closer, "Tune 341." The joint opens with Henry Mancini's "Mr. Lucky," and Cobb goes for a wide open, hard-driving swing. Marsalis and Speight also solo and Speight in particular shines. Another treat is the grooving "Real Time," by the late organist Richard Tee, and the simple yet ...

| | Patrick T Murphy Esperanza CD (2007)
Winger CD music
$12.69 Patrick T Murphy was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois on January 26, 1987 and was then raised in Park Forest, Illinois. Since a young age, Patrick had a strong passion for music, writing and composing lightly since he was five years old. Nothing serious ever developed, though, until high school when he started to involve himself with the theatrical community. When he was cast in OKLAHOMA!, he started to push himself into learning music theory and teaching himself multiple instruments, including voice, piano, guitar, and harmonica. From there, he joined multiple choral/vocal ensembles including his high school's Spartan Choir, Madrigals, and Voices in Your Head (a male a cappella group). He also sang for the Grand Prairie Singers, the youngest singer ever accepted into the company. He also performed in GUYS AND DOLLS and then played the lead in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. At the end of his senior year in High School, Patrick wrote and directed a one-act musical called I LOVE YOU, TOO.Patrick is not a trained pianist, but rather he learned to teach himself. Working as a janitor at his school for tuition, he spent his 15-minute breaks slowly teaching himself how to play piano, slowly but surely. As his skills developed, he became more motivated to release a music album, his lifelong dream. He taught himself music theory and began composing music of all sorts. Patrick then taught himself the guitar, bass, and harmonica. Patrick now attends Loyola University Chicago as a Theatre Major. Since then he has performed with the Loyola University ...
