Mike Bloomfield / Bloomfield-Kooper-Stills / Al Kooper / Stephen Stills Super Session CD (1968) Top Seller
All-Time Greatest Hits & More: 1959-1965 songs A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...Johnny was signed to Columbia after this gig!). Newly remastered & now with 4 bonus tracks, 'Albert's Shuffle' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Season of the Witch.' (2002 Remix w/o Horns), 'Blues For Nothing' (Studio Outtake) & 'Fat Grey Cloud' Previously Unreleased Live Track). Features 12-page booklet with unpublished photos from the recording session, new liner notes by Al Kooper & the Rolling Stone Hall Of Fame review by David Fricke. 60 scintillating minutes! 13 tracks. Platters Magic Touch: An Anthology CDs (1991)
All-Time Greatest Hits & More: 1959-1965 buy CD music A double-disc, 50-track extravaganza from one of the paragons of smooth soul, The Magic Touch: An Anthology is the most complete look at the Platters, barring only Bear Family's 1994 box set Four Platters and One Lovely Dish. Between 1955 and 1962, the quintet recorded 36 entries that reached the pop charts and they're all here, led by the ones that absolutely must be on any effective Platters compilation: "Only You (And You Alone)," "The Great Pretender," "(You've Got) The Magic Touch," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Harbor Lights," and "Red Sails in the Sunset." That leaves plenty of room for the type of material collectors drool over, like the previously unreleased "Hula Hop" and a rare Tony Williams solo record ("When You Return"), plus obscure Platters versions of songs made famous by others ("The Glory of Love," "Goodnight Sweetheart, It's Time to Go," "My Old Flame," even an enjoyable stab at "Sixteen Tons"). It's all delivered in the sweetest sound heard yet, with a lengthy booklet and many superb photos. It's the ultimate Platters anthology, and it's everything this important group deserves. ~ John Bush
All songs originally released 1955-1963. Booklet includes release information and liner notes by Harry Weinger.
The Platters: Herb Reed, Paul Robi, Zola Taylor, David Lynch, Tony Williams, Sonny Turner.

Shirelles 25 All-Time Greatest Hits CD (1999) Top Seller
All-Time Greatest Hits & More: 1959-1965 songs An excellent 26-song single-disc collection that has all of the significant hits and several very fine low-charting 45s and B-sides. Some good tracks are missing, however, notably "Putty" (which the Yardbirds covered) and Goffin-King's "Make the Night a Little Longer." Rhino's Anthology double LP still has a tiny edge in song selection if you can find it, but if you're not real picky this is certainly a quality summary of their career highlights. There are also a few items that don't show up on all the best-ofs, like the 1961 B-side "The Things I Want to Hear" and the small 1964 hit "Thank You, Baby." ~ Richie Unterberger
Digitally remastered by by Marty Wekser.
Includes liner notes by Mike Rogogna.

Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters/Rockin' & Driftin' CD (1998)
All-Time Greatest Hits & More: 1959-1965 album for sale Two great albums by the gospel-influenced group that gave the fledgling Atlantic Records some of its first hits. These Drifters, of course, are not to be confused with the quartet of the same name, also on Atlantic, who were led by (among others) Ben E. King, and who ruled the charts between 1959 and 1964.
The Drifters heard here were conceived as a vehicle for frontman Clyde McPhatter, whose instantly recognizable high tenor was one of the greatest vocal sounds in early R&B and rock & roll. Most of McPhatter's group's hits--including the good rocking "Money Honey," the original "Ruby Baby," and the group's classic R&B version of "White Christmas"--are included here. For the rest of the story, fans should check out Atlantic's excellent two-disc Drifters anthologies LET THE BOOGIE WOOGIE ROLL: GREAT HITS 1953-1958.
Includes liner notes by Marv Goldberg.
2 LPs on 1 CD: CLYDE MCPHATTER & THE DRIFTERS (1956)/ROCKIN' & DRIFTIN' (1958).
