Many were beginning to write off 'pop metal' by the dawn of the 1990's (and with good reason - the impending Seattle alt-rock movement was about to annihilate the genre), but bands such as Ratt continued to trudge onward. 1990's DETONATOR showed that the popular L.A. band had toughened up its sound a bit more, and notched up another platinum certified success. Much more focused and consistent than 1988's REACH FOR THE SKY, DETONATOR spawned the popular single/MTV video "Lovin' You's A Dirty Job," as well as such other highlights as "Shame Shame Shame," "Can't Wait On Love," and the ballad "Givin' Yourself Away." Despite Ratt's commercial success in the eye of the oncoming storm, the band would soon go on an extended hiatus (their next all-new album wouldn't be released until 1997), and lose founding guitarist Robbin Crosby in the process.

OUT OF THE CELLAR. THIS ALBUM WAS RATT'S FINEST ALBUM MUSICALLY! Submitted by a reviewer (POMONA, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
End of an Era ! "Out Of The Cellar" was 6 years past and the 80s were fading fast. Even upon the first play, this album had the feel of a farewell disk (of sorts). That said, the band offers a truly excellent effort here and shows how far they had come since "You Think You're Tough." This and the preceding 4 albums, along with that first EP, are a genuinely fine collection of metal. Submitted by Gerard (California USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The End Of The Line Notice my title. As indeed this was the end for Ratt. After this record they never recaptured anything resembling the sound and influence they once had. This was a flop as it was in sales. I like many of the songs on here but it suffers from overproduction, an overly commercial sound, and a distinctly not Ratt vibe. This is even worse in these respects than Reach For The Sky which was a departure in itself. The commercialism will make me not want to listen more than I'd say once at a time to this as it gets very repetitive, unlike their first say 4 releases. Surely Stephen and the band could not be proud of this record, as it is so far from their original sound and production values it could pass for a total pop sellout group of today with just a heavier sound. Go get Ratt EP through Dancing Undercover to hear the REAL Ratt.

Ratt and Roll Submitted by Rob ( Ratt fan for life ) (Port lavaca , Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Descent into mediocrity This album, the last of the classic Ratt lineup, happens to be their worst, for several reasons. Desmond Child took a lot of the raw excitement out of the earlier excitement and replaced with big pop melodies and hooks (moreso than Ratt had before). Indeed, I can imagine Tina Turner singing Givin' Yourself Away. Also, the boys in Ratt have pretty much run out of ideas and are tired. However, this CD has some good points: the production, while very glossy, is excellent, Stephen Pearcy actually sounds good (which he hasn't since Out Of The Cellar), and some of the songs, like Shame, Shame, Shame and Lovin' You's A Dirty Job rank among the band's finest tune. If you want a decent hair metal CD or are a Ratt fan, I'd recommend this album despite its flaws. Submitted by mcsavage (Pittsburgh, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ozzy Osbourne Ozzmosis CD (1995) Remastered
Detonator
$7.59 Let us all be thankful that Ozzy's retirement didn't stick. It supposedly lasted for three days, after which he got bored and started working on this project. Heavy, riff-intensive tunes, progressive song structures and a little psychedelia give OZZMOSIS a definite Sabbath flavor. Ozzy must have been in touch with whatever inspired early classics like PARANOID and MASTERS OF REALITY. Witness the extremely chunky "Thunder Underground," which can stand ...

| | Eskimo Joe A Song Is a City CD (2004) (Import) Australia
Detonator
$22.99 SONG IS A CITY is the second album from Australian band Eskimo Joe and features nine live acoustic recordings from 2003.
Eskimo Joe's follow-up to their 2001 full-length debut Girl shows the band trying to shake off any expectation as well as the ghosts of their early releases. Simple, even juvenile songs like "Sweater" and "Turn Up Your Stereo" from the late '90s earned Eskimo Joe a place in many an Aussie teenager's brain, but after the modest success of their first album, it became clear that the group was growing up, and so was their music. After the clumsy opener "Come Down" fades, a driving melodic piano line ushers in "From the Sea," still hailed by some as the band's finest hour. Released weeks before the album, this first single signalled the beginning of a new era in more ways than one (Eskimo Joe were dumped from EMI's Modular label and then signed by Festival Mushroom in 2002). Vocalist Kav Temperley revealed that for this album, the band turned to their coastal hometown of Fremantle in Western Australia for inspiration, hence the album's title, and "From the Sea" is a clear indication of this. Bringing in the piano as a focal point on some cuts shows the direction Eskimo Joe are leaning towards, and they extend its use on their third album Black Fingernails, Red Wine. While this album is a little hit-and-miss with catchy pop gems lying next to the aimless ("I'm So Tired") and the wasted ("Carousel"), the trio have put some memorable tunes together. The wonderful ballad "Life Is Better with You" has an uplifting chorus complete with makeshift choir, and although the verses owe much to Neil Young's "Down by the River," it's one of the album's highlights. "Older Than You" is two-and-a-half minutes of radio-friendly pop bliss, and buried towards the end of the record ...
| | Nortec Collective Tijuana Sessions Vol. 3 CD (2005)
Detonator
$11.65 The third compilation from the loosely organized Nortec Collective (whatever happened to volume two?) offers four years of development from the debut, and that's apparent in a greater cohesion of sound. Where the debut offering sometimes seemed to graft Mexican elements onto electronica and dance music almost as an afterthought, here everything is more integrated, as with Hiperboreal's "Dandy del Sur," where village banda meets spaghetti ...
