The first album Testament recorded without producer Alex Perialas, Souls of Black unites the thrashers with the better-known Michael Rosen. With Perialas having served Testament so well, many headbangers wondered how great an impact this change would have on the unit. But they needn't have worried -- Testament sounds very much like it did on its three previous albums and is as heavy as ever. The band's outlook was still far from cheerful. While it had moved away from gothic and occult themes, Testament still sees the world as a hellish, insufferable place plagued by evil governments and the threat of another world war. Like Practice What You Preach, Souls isn't in a class with The New Order, but is nonetheless a welcome addition to Testament's generally rewarding catalog. ~ Alex Henderson

The production is simply awful, the band is clearly not very inspired, tired. No wander their following record "The Ritual" was more mainstream (but excellent)...and much better produced! Love To hate this record is just great, is like heavy trash metal, and the Song call "THE LEGASY" is probably the best song ever writing by Testament, this song is so Good that I WISH BE THE AUTOR but unfortunately im not, so just buy it! Great Album I love all of Testament's albums, but the songs Seven Days Of May, The Legacy and Beginning of the End/Face in The Sky are among my faves on Souls of Black. Great High School graduation memories with this album. Looking forward to the upcomding Testament album as well!

Electric and acoustic pianist Johnson from D.C. is a Ramsey Lewis wannabe in a Sun Goddess phase -- his simplistic, unchallenging melodies are pleasant enough, but come closer to disco than real R&B. Of these 11 cuts, they are even borderline on smooth jazz content. It's evident from the first three tunes -- the title track, "Out of Somewhere," and "88 Ways to Love," all easy dance grooves -- that the influence of Lewis is quite pervasive. Johnson goes it alone on "88" with multiple keyboard programming overdubs. He actually sounds good on Fender Rhodes for the cool funk "The Neck Factor," but also sounds outdated. He's more upbeat on "Doc's Groove" and "It's So Nice"; the former is predictable with snarly guitar from Stan Cooper, and the latter has a tick-tock rhythm that comes closer to authentic R&B. Tenor saxophonist Marshall Keys injects some real jazz into "'Til the Cops Come Knockin'," a rather disturbing song title unto itself, while Bryan Mills' faded bursts of sax sound set up a nice unison sax-piano vibe for the contemporary "smooth" ballad "Maxin'." Vocals are taken ...

If the late '90s proved anything it's that there should be a new subgenre conscientiously recorded into the music books: "The Radiohead Congregation." Because sometime after said band's The Bends or even their bleaker OK Computer, an entire avalanche of copyists started to pour down for a public starved for more Thom Yorke mewling. Which is why it's easy to pick out bands like Muse or Doves or Coldplay ...

$17.69 Praise the Lord, y'all. It's your blessed and highly favored "Brotha J.D." And I'm here with Agape MusicWorks recording artist, Briss ...uh..mmm...uh... Wm. "Briss." Brister...(we'll get into that later). This New Jersey native first came on the scene in 1996 with the Sony group "C.D. Hawkins and Singers." Since then he released his debut album "The Journey" in the fall of 2000 and his music video from the single "The Time Song" in 2002. I had the chance to talk with Briss. about his new, follow up CD, "FOCUS." You know Brotha J.D. was gonna get the exclusive! So let's get it started, y'all. Check out the interview with singer, songwriter, producer, Briss! BROTHA J.D.: Praise the Lord, man. It's good to see you.BRISS: He's worthy, brotha. It's good to be here again.BROTHA J.D.: No doubt. Let's talk about the first album. How did you feel about The Journey? Was it a platinum success? BRISS: In my heart I can say that "The Journey" was a success. The music has been played all over the country and overseas. It didn't go platinum or bronze (laughter). In fact, though you couldn't tell by the good amount of airplay it received, sales were modest. I'm not ashamed at all. God used the modest sales of "The Journey" to help me see that success in ministry is not measured in units sold, notoriety, or the awards you win. They are all nice if it comes that way. But I learned that God's standard of success is measured by our obedience to Him. "Am I doing & saying what God told me?" "Did I give Him the glory in everything?" That's real success. "The Journey" touched many people's lives... more than I could ever know. No amount of sales can compare to that.BROTHA J.D.: Amen Brother! I hear that. Well, tell us what have you been up to since The Journey was released. BRISS: Well, I can definitely say I've been enjoying marriage! Shout out to my wife, Bev. We're going on our 4th year. I've also been serving as the Minister of Music at Ocean Avenue Baptist Church, in Jersey City, ...
