Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards); John Bonham (drums). Producers: John Walters, Jeff Griffin, Jimmy Page. Engineers: George Marino, George Chkiantz, Eddie Kramer, Glyn Johns, Andy Johns, Vic Maile, Tony Wilson, Ron Nevison, Keith Harwwod, Leif Mases, Chris Houston, John Timperly, Bruce Buchanon. This 4-disc career retrospective contains two thirds of their songs, including a few rarities ("Hey Hey What Can I Do," "Traveling Riverside Blues" and "White Summer/Black Mountain Side") for a total of 54 tracks. Digital remastering was done by Jimmy Page and George Marino. All the tracks were personally selected and sequenced by Page along with Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. The box set also contains a deluxe 36-page booklet with essays by Cameron Crowe, Kurt Loder and Robert Palmer, a discography and many color photos. Most of the tracks are remastered from the original master tapes. Led Zeppelin's primary method of artistic expression was their albums. Although they had a handful of hit singles and although selected album tracks were played endlessly on the radio, the true range of their music is only evident on the original albums, which were carefully sequenced and assembled. Consequently, the notion of a Led Zeppelin anthology is a bit strange -- their records worked as individual pieces. Nevertheless, the four-disc box set Led Zeppelin includes most of their best and most famous material. Jimmy Page determined the set's running order, taking the songs out of their familiar contexts and placing them in a new, occasionally jarring, sequence, providing new insights to the band's music that dedicated fans will appreciate. Led Zeppelin is the only album in their catalog to include the classic B-side "Hey Hey What Can I Do," as well as their unreleased version of Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" and a live medley of Page's "White Summer/Black Mountain Side." Most fans will find these three tracks essential, but will balk at the price, especially since all of Zeppelin's albums have been remastered since the original release of the box set. While the box contains a wealth of brilliant music, all of it is better heard in its original incarnation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews surpized and delighted I expected 4 cd's in plastick cases, but instead recieved a collection type boxed set. Brilliant. Also ,a large colour spread or band history , photograpghs , Diskoghraphy , and the like , made a " whim purchase " very worth while.
It brought back memories of another time , another place , another world. Submitted by bobplace (Australia.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Best rock band in history I'm just revisiting zeppelin. I liked them in the 60's and 70's, but now they are even better because there is so much crap on the radio today. Noone can touch Paige's guitar playing. And Plant's vocals are legendary. This to me is the greatest compilation of music ever put together. Make sure you listen to Ten Years Gone. That song gives me chills everytime I hear it. Best money I ever spent on music. Submitted by alatpf (cleveland, ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent Zeppelin Compilation! Well, so much can be said. First, from a technical perspective, this is a very nicely remastered set. Yes, it's true, if you have good hi-fi equipment you can hear the difference between a good remastering job and a bad one and this is a finely crafted release.
I have owned every Zeppelin album ( that's vinyl for you young 'uns ) from which these songs were selected and I now have the cd's.
Why buy it again? The digital transfer is great on this set, the soundstaging is incredible, much better than most of the original issue cd's.
From an emotional perspective; my wife and I were teenagers when these guys arrived and it was a milestone in rock and roll history to be sure. Led Zeppelin broke musical conventions, they were creatively, light years ahead of everyone. Page's guitar work is unique and captivating. Plant's voice is of itself a musical instrument.
A thoughtfully produced cross section of Zeppelin's work here. A great add to the collection. Submitted by a reviewer (Olympia, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
