Lynyrd Skynyrd: Johnnie Van Zant (vocals); Gary Rossington, Ed King, Randall Hall (guitar); Leon Wilkeson (bass); Billy Powell (keyboards); Artimus Pyle (drums, percussion). The 1987 reunion tour proved to be quite successful, so the reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to record a full-fledged new record. Though it's hard not to miss the songwriting of Ronnie Van Zant, this is still a strong band, capable of turning out convincing rockers and ballads. There may not be many songs that distinguish themselves beyond something generic, but the group is passionate and tight, making this reunion seem necessary, not a cash-in. This still isn't an essential release, even for the devoted, but it is enjoyable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine After Lynyrd Skynyrd's highly successful reunion tour of 1987-88 wrapped up, the band (which now included vocalist Johnny Van Zant in place of his brother Ronnie, and Ed King in place of Allen Collins) decided to resurrect Skynyrd as a full-time proposition. Signing with Atlantic Records and re-enlisting their longtime producer, Tom Dowd, the band issued 1991, their first new studio album since 1977's STREET SURVIVORS. Instead of experimenting or broadening Skynyrd's longtime southern rock direction, 1991 follows the same formula. While it may not be on par with the original line-up's classics (PRONOUNCED LEH-NERD SKIN-NERD, SECOND HELPING, etc.), 1991 still has it's share of highlights--the serene "Pure and Simple" and the guitar rocker "Mama (Afraid to Say Goodbye)."Rolling Stone (8/8/91) - 3 Stars - Good - "..on many songs..(they) cook up enough noisy raunch to please most of the noncoms..out there in the hinterlands." Musician (9/91) - "..the sort of strong, rhythm-oriented hard rock that was always Skynyrd's signature...Skynyrd's three-guitar-assault, the legendary mules, just picks up where it left off..."
