This eight-CD set should be a part of any collection that presumes to take American music -- not just rock & roll or rhythm & blues -- seriously. Atlantic Records was one of dozens of independent labels started up after the war by neophyte executives and producers, but it was different from most of the others in that the guys who ran it were honest and genuinely loved music. Coupled with a lot of luck and some good judgment, the results trace a good chunk of the history of American music and popular culture. Disc one opens with cuts which slot in somewhere midway between jazz, bop, and "race" music (as the term was used then). Disc two is pure, distilled R&B, the stuff filling the airwaves of black radio and the jukeboxes in the "wrong" parts of town in 1952-54. Surprisingly, the material on Disc three, covering 1955-57, isn't very different in content or character from Disc two, despite the fact that it covers the period when white teenagers were starting to listen to and buy these records in large numbers. It's only with Disc four that one sees the consequences of the late '50s -- Ray Charles in his final days with the label, juxtaposed with the Drifters in their post-1958 incarnation and the start of the company's relationship with Stax/Volt Records. Disc six (1965-67) is practically a mini-tribute to Stax/Volt, filled with the best-known sides of Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Booker T. & the MG's. Discs seven and eight run from the late '60s and the heyday of Aretha Franklin to some great early-'70s soul, including Roberta Flack and the Spinners. The booklet, with a full sessionography and biographical notes on each artist, would be worth 20 bucks on its own. ~ Bruce Eder

Often Referred To As The "Stax Box".Q (p.126) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "[P]retty much the Old Testament of American music. It traces the pioneering early R&B of Atlantic artists such as Ray Charles, The Drifters and The Coasters, through to the birth of soul in 1961 when Atlantic forged an alliance with the Stax label..."
Down Beat (3/92, p.34) - "..this boxed set is the quintessential collection for understanding the evolution of R&B into rock & roll, modern pop, Memphis soul, Miami soul, and early funk...the set as a whole is a valuable case study in modern music history.."

5 stars birth of rock and roll
This is a tremendous collection of R & B . It is the birth of rock and roll. Ahmet Ertigan does not get nearly enough of the credit he deserves for the incredible discoveries he made. Ahmet is to Rhythm and blues as Sam Phillips was to Rock and Roll!

5 stars ¡Im-presionante!
As we currently say in Spain, this boxset is "im-presionante" (how will you say it in english?... "breath-taking")... This is what SOUL is, the Real Thing. I already knew and of course remembered very well -because of my age- the Atlantic hits of the 70's, but I didn't know very well the previous history, except for some very famous songs. Believe me: it won't be easy to find a R&B record collection better than this... it's a dream to get all this marvelous music and musicians together in just one collection. Besides, I found here hits that almost made me cry recalling my youth.

5 stars The story of R&B!
Looking at this comprehensive box set and the song selections on it, one can safely call this the ultimate purchase, for you'll definetly get your money's worth out of this. It covers from the label's premier recordings way back in 1947, the introduction of new acts like the Clovers, the Cardinals, Ruth Brown and Big Joe Turner in the '50s as well as LaVern Baker, Clyde and the Drifters, Ray Charles, and the Coasters. Moving into the '60s with Ben E. King the "new" Drifters and the creation of the Stax/Volt division of the label in Memphis with Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. and the MG's. Also there is Aretha Franklin, Joe Tex, Clarence Carter. Moving into the '70s we are introduced to the Spinners, Roberta Flack, and the Persuaders wher finally our musical journey ends at 1974. This was a golden age in music, and one independent label told it all. I do not own this box set, but I do plan to get it soon and I know many of the songs on here. If you're a fan of classic R&B, this is what you need.
