Although it should please die-hard fans, the reconstituted Lynyrd Skynyrd's second studio record does little to expand the group's horizons. Aside from a few longer songs which allow the group to stretch out, the majority of The Last Rebel is by-the-book Southern rock, further undermined by Johnny Van Zant's cliché-riddled lyrics. ~ Jason Ankeny After nearly a decade apart, a reconstructed Lynyrd Skynyrd toured together in the late '80s, and became a full-time band again by the '90s--returning to the grind of recording and touring. The second studio album of the "Johnny Van Zant-era," 1993's THE LAST REBEL, was comparable to its predecessor two years earlier, 1991, since it didn't stray far from Skynyrd's classic '70s output: tough rockers with a country edge. While individual standouts would include such southern rock ditties as "Good Lovin's Hard to Find" and the title track, THE LAST REBEL would signal the last studio album that included the talents of original Skynyrd guitarist Ed King.Entertainment Weekly (2/26/93, p.56) - "...Johnny Van Zant may not have the innate swagger of his late brother, Ronnie, Skynyrd's former lead singer: But give him three steps and he'll saunter a good Dixie mile in Ronnie's hat..." - Rating: B Musician (5/93, p.89) - "...Lynyrd Skynyrd serve notice that they have indeed returned, and with a vengeance....an impressive mix of Southern boogie and hard-edged rock that makes no apologies for the genre..." The Last Great Album Bearing The Lynyrd Skynyrd Name There's a strong argument to be made that without Ronnie Van Zant or Allen Collins there is no Skynyrd. While I subscribe to that school of thought, I can't write off this version of Lynyrd Skynyrd. This version of Skynyrd, more specifically this album was as close as the band has been to recapturing the spirit of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd. The song starts off with Good Lovin's Hard To Find. Not by any means a bad song, but it is one of the weakest of the bunch. So naturally, Atlantic Records saw fit to release it to radio as the lead off single prior to the album's release. Atlantic Records should be ashamed of themselves for it too. The obvious choice should have been the title track. The lyrics are fantastic and as good as they are the music is that much better. Ed King's slide solo at the end fits the imagery of the song to a tee. Ever wonder what George Harrison meant when he penned the lyrics to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"? Listen to this track and find out. That ending solo is his guiatr literally weeping in his hands. Had Atlantic done the right thing, this would have been chosen as the first single. It may be nearly 7 minutes long, but who cares? Free Bird is 9 minutes long and it wasn't supposed to be a hit either.
Another obvious standout track is Born To Run. Just a fantastic song. More great slide playing by Ed King on it as well as some fantastic picking by Randall Hall during the solo in the middle of the song. This one has a soaring up-tempo solo in the tradition of Free Bird at the end. While it's not the classic that Free Bird is, it's still fantastic.
The rest of the album is great too. Those are by far the two highlights, but there is plenty here to satisfy Skynyrd fans. If you're one who doesn't particularly care for the direction the current Skynyrd have gone treading a little too close to a mainstream country sound, then check this one out. It stands as a testament that while there's nothing as great as classic original Skynyrd, there was once a band who came as close as any band could. This album proves it.

Great Album THE LAST REBEL is a great album from a Lynyrd Skynyrd lineup that I feel has been unfairly written off after the triumphs of the Thomasson/Medlocke group. Most of the songs here are great, especially "One Thing", the title cut, "Kiss Your Freedom Goodbye", and "Born To Run." This album is a must-own. Another day, another live Hawkwind album but, before we go any further, one thing must be made clear. This album is not. . .a remastered recycling, an upgraded bootleg, a degrading rip-off. It is, however, the best full-length Hawkwind concert documentary in 30 years, a two-CD set that, in terms of sonic assault, accumulated orgones, and universal mastery, renders even the best-heeled of its myriad predecessors redundant as anything but historical documents. ...

One thing that no one can deny about Sloan is that they can't be ignored as a band always willing to bring out the fun and the rock & roll. They always wear the hearts of their influences proudly on their record sleeves, but never succumb to loss of originality for the sake of trying too hard to impress upon the listener the validity of their roots. Action Pact expands upon Sloan's muscular leanings, due primarily to the band's decision to hire a producer for the first time in its history. Under the direction of Tom Rothrock (producer of artists as diverse as R.L. Burnside, Beck, and Elliott Smith), the songs gel like on no previous Sloan release. The band really plays to its strengths on Action Pact, showcasing remarkably tight vocals, the power of drummer Andrew Scott, and the arena-rocking, bouncy, handclapper songs that defined ...
