Everything But The Girl: Tracey Thorn (vocals); Ben Watt (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, electric piano, mini-Moog). Additional personnel: Richard Thompson (guitar); Peter King (alto saxophone); Kate St. John (English horn); John Coxon, Ben Watt (keyboards, programming); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); Dave Mattacks (drums); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Producers: Ben Watt, Tracey Thorn, John Coxon. Recorded in London, England in winter 1993. Despite its title, Amplified Heart is one of Everything but the Girl's more acoustic works. A simple instrumentation of guitars and keyboards, augmented here and there by British folk-rock veterans like Richard Thompson, Danny Thompson, and Dave Mattacks, serves to set up a series of songs of romantic disillusionment. Declaring "my life is just an image of a roller coaster, anyway" and "I don't understand anything," among other things, over and over the songs speak of confusion and disappointment deriving from failed love affairs. The approach is much more introspective than that taken on the group's previous album of new music, Worldwide, but Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt's musical restraint supports it well. This is an album to listen to when you've just broken up with your lover, or even when you're just in the mood to think about lost lovers from long ago -- self-pity set to music. ~ William Ruhlmann On AMPLIFIED HEART, this pop duo's mesmerizing blend of swooning Fleetwood Mac-like vocal textures and modern dance floor beats is a departure from their previously sparse, jazzy acoustic style, but is equally as beautiful. Out of a fertile territory of delicate melodies and precise musical passages, vocalist Tracey Thorn allows us to peer in at both her chilling memories and warmest moments. With the often overwhelming sincerity of Ben Watt's musical accompaniement to Thorn's settled vocals, AMPLIFIED HEART is everything adult-oriented pop needs to be.Musician (8/94, p.90) - "...merely exquisite ear candy...the modern equivelant to Fleetwood Mac's RUMORS..." Amplified Heart Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The first EBTG cd I bought, and the best I think! I always liked those few EBTG songs that got airtime, (but DJ's wore out "Missing" to the point I dread hearing it anymore!), but when I heard a few more of their songs on a nightly "Chill" radio program, I had to check out their albums. THIS was the first EBTG cd I ever owned, and I absolutely LOVE IT!! Especially "Get Me", although it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. Tracy Thorn can sing! After this disc, I was hooked, and now I always look for any disc I can find by them. I also have and love Walking Wounded, and "The Heart Remains A Child" has become one of my favorite songs by EBTG. I tend to just put the player on repeat after programming in "Get Me" and "The Heart..." in the ol' 6-disc, and listen to both these songs over and over and over. Yep, Amplified Heart will turn ANYONE into an instant EBTG fan for life! I now have 4 of their albums, but actually didn't really like Tempermental, Idlwild, or Language Of Life all that much, so I traded them in at the local record store. I sure hope EBTG come out with a new album soon, with Tracy singing like she does on AMPLIFIED HEART (and Walking Wounded)! This chick can SING! Her voice on Massive Attack's "Protection" is one of the finer examples of her awesome voice! Submitted by hairball98498 (Tacoma, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A compelling masterpiece by EBTG I've been a fan of EBTG for a couple of years now and I've collected most of their albums but this one has touched me the most. It is a great blend of contemporary pop mixed with acoustic rock and traces of jazz, so simple when you hear it, but nonetheless perfect. Tracy Thorn's vocals never sounded so captivating and soft compared to previous albums, it's a pure pleasure just to listen her. Ben & Tracy have created one of the best soulful and romantic album there is, and I would recommend anybody to give it at least a try. Perhaps you would fall in love with it as I have. rich vocal stylings mixed with profound lyrics By far EBTG's Greatest Album since Worldwide. This is the one CD I would take with me if I were stranded on a Desert Isle. From the opening song Rollercoaster, to Disenchanted and all songs in between, it is a mellow acoustic album. This is the last album EBTG did before going Techno POP. 25th of December, We Walk the Same Line, Get Me, Two Star...you will love every song on this album. 5+ stars Submitted by Runtune (Phoenix) Was This Review Helpful? Amplified Heart
$5.95 Live Recording
Everything But The Girl: Tracey Thorn (vocals); Ben Watt. It may have been the logical extension of Everything But The Girl's ersatz cool jazz approach to finally go all the way by hiring veteran producer Tommy LiPuma and a studio full of fusion stars like Joe Sample (the Crusaders), Russell Ferrante (the Yellowjackets), Michael Brecker, and, finally, Stan Getz, whose early '60s albums of Brazilian jazz are a main touchstone for the group. With such firepower, The Language of Life, at least musically, may be the album that Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn have been trying to make from the beginning. But it falls down in its songwriting, largely because of the near-disappearance of Thorn ...
