This teenage R&B singer hit the Top Ten late in 1994 with "I Wanna Be Down," a representative track from her solid debut album. Brandy knows her way around a hip-hop beat, layering tender-tough vocals over spare arrangements like a lower-key Janet Jackson or a more stripped-down Mary J. Blige. Brandy Norwood, the teen television actress on "Thea," began making waves in the pop world with her debut album BRANDY and her Top 10 single "I Wanna Be Down." The album is young, bubbly, and even sexy. Brandy's soul-touched R&B sound mixes sweetly with her jazz-inflected flourishes. Her themes are the concerns of any 15-year old. The midtempo "I Wanna Be Down" deals with teenage desire, "I Dedicate" pays tribute to her musical inspirations and her family, "Best Friend" is a paean to her brother (also a television actor), and "Give Me You" is a piano-driven, upbeat religious affirmation, effectively showcasing her gospel roots.
Her strong voice is more than competent enough to handle the sometimes tricky musical changes. She often displays a breathy, low-register vocalizing that is mature and controlled. Brandy, who also co-wrote some of the material, displays the musical chops to join the league of some of the influential artists she acknowledges in "I Dedicate." When Brandy first came out, she was the cute girl with the nice unique soulful voice who could sing her u know what off. Now 10 years later, she is still blowing up the music scene, she's a singer,actress,model. I'm so proud of her she's already a legend in her own way.

Beginning of Brandy's success
I remember I was 4 when this album came out and every time I would hear "Baby" on the radio, I would bob my head and sing, "Baby, Baby, Baby, Baby." My mom bought this album and it was HOT!! I'm so glad that she proved to people that she wasn't a one hit wonder. My favorite song on this album is BROKENHEARTED. WHOOOOOOOO!! tHAT'S MY SONG! I can't listen to that cd and only play that song once, my finger stays on the repeat button.

Along with Juvenile's 400 Degreez (1998), B.G.'s Chopper City in the Ghetto is among the best albums released by Cash Money Records during its heyday, and the inclusion of "Bling Bling" alone makes the album notable in the context of its time period. B.G. already had several albums to his credit by the time of Chopper City in the Ghetto, which was his first to be released in the wake of Cash Money's distribution deal with Universal Records, but this was the one to break him nationally, as both "Cash Money Is an Army" and "Bling Bling" became hits on urban radio and video television (particularly on BET). As is the case with all Cash Money releases of the era, Mannie Fresh produces all the tracks, and associate rappers Juvenile, Lil Wayne, Turk, and the Big Tymers are frequently featured. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Besides the street-level gangsta clichés inherent in tracks like "Niggas N Trouble," "Play'n & Laugh'n" and "All on U," B.G.'s smooth flow and laidback raps make Chopper City a solid album, even packed in the middle of his hectic release schedule. Linnaeus was the Swede who created the system of taxonomy we use for plants and animals, and 2007 marks the 300th anniversary of his birth. So it's hardly surprising that Sweden's best acoustic band, Väsen, should have been commissioned to make the music for the celebration. The remarkable thing is that what they've assembled, apart from one track, is music that relates pretty directly to Linnaeus. Even better is the fact that it's superbly played by the quartet. They've continued to grow in stature, and now they have the power of a rock band -- except for the amplification. They're not afraid to get atonal -- moments of the solo on "Skimspolska" resemble a feedback electric guitar solo. There's real elegance in the arrangements, which play to the strengths of all four musicians, and the percussion, in particular, deserves a mention. It's subtle, often unobtrusive, but gives a real propulsion to everything. Every aspect of this impresses, from the research to the performance, on a superb record. ~ Chris Nickson
