Digitally remastered edition of the original superstar musician trio's first "reunion" album from 1977. After a period of separation that lasted about six years following the release of this album's predecessor "Deja Vu" (which added Neil Young to the lineup), the original trio regrouped at Miami's famed Criteria Studios to recapture the magic that is so much more than the sum of their individual parts. The album yielded the hit single "Just A Song Before I Go" and "Fair Game" as well as the FM radio favorites "See The Changes", "Shadow Captain", the haunting "Cathedral" and "Dark Star". Other participating musicians included Craig Doerge, Joe Vitale, Tim Drummond, Mike Finnegan, Russ Kunkel and the legendary Ray Barretto.

Audio Remasterer: Jow Gatswirt. Photographer: Joel Bernstein. Arrangers: David Crosby; Graham Nash; Mike Lewis ; Joel Bernstein. The times had certainly changed since Déjà Vu's release in 1970. Nevertheless, there was a hunger in audiences for a return to the harmony-soaked idealism with which the trio had been catapulted to popularity, and CSN consequently reached number two on the charts, behind Fleetwood Mac's megasuccessful Rumours. The music here is very good, though probably not up to the hard-to-match level of Crosby, Stills & Nash or Déjà Vu. Still, the songs showed a great deal of lyrical maturity and compositional complexity compared to those earlier albums (from a far more innocent time). "Just a Song Before I Go" was the latest of Graham Nash's radio-friendly acoustic numbers, and a Top Ten single. "See the Changes" and "Dark Star" ranked with the best of Stephen Stills' work, while David Crosby contributed three classics from his distinctive oeuvre: "Shadow Captain," "Anything at All," and the beautiful "In My Dreams." Nash's multi-part "Cathedral," a recollection of an acid trip taken in Winchester Cathedral on his 32nd birthday, became a staple of the group's live repertoire. CSN was the trio's last fully realized album, and also the last recording on which the three principals handled all the vocal parts without the sweetening of additional voices. It has held up remarkably well, both as a memento of its time and as a thoroughly enjoyable musical work. ~ Jim Newsom This 77-track, four-CD set remains one of the best boxes devoted to a single music act that one can buy, CSN Music | List Price | $32.98 (You save $4.69) | | Category | Rock Albums, Rock/Pop CDs, Folk Rock | | Label | Atlantic | | Orig Year | 1977 | | All Time Sales Rank | 1885 | | CD Universe Part number | 1097420 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 20, 1994 | | Studio/Live | Mixed | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Crosby, Stills & Nash; David Crosby; Graham Nash; Howard Albert; Ron Albert; Stephen Stills | | Engineer | Howard Albert; Ron Albert | | Recording Time | 43 minutes | | Personnel | Russ Kunkel, James Taylor, Jimmy Page, David Crosby, Jimmy Page, Joni Mitchell, Dave Mason, Stephen Stills, Jerry Garcia, Danny Kortchmar, Jimi Hendrix, Leland Sklar, David Lindley, Branford Marsalis, Rita Coolidge, John Sebastian, Carole King, Jack Casady, Al Perkins, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Dallas Taylor, Chris Hillman, Donnie Dacus, Bruce Palmer, Fred Neil, Neil Young, Ray Barretto, Tim Drummond, Joe Vitale, Craig Doerge, George "Chocolate" Perry, Gerald Johnson | | Additional Info | Import |
Crosby, Stills, and Nash CSN Songs CSN Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Very good. I actually think that this album is somehow forgotten and it truly doesnt deserve that. This is actually one of the best csn albums ever made. It is so good that it is very close to the first one. A lot of great songs and a superb production. All Times Best Country-Rock Album "Tinkling notes of West Sun". Like this Jimi Hendrix defined the CSN's voices. A majestic album. Submitted by achille.maggio (Brolo (ME), Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A sign of things to come. At this point in the trio's career, David Crosby's drug use was becoming more and more obvious, and more and more obnoxious. This resulted in him only contributing vocals and one song on this album, the third album the group put together at the time. The contributions that Crosby could have made to some of these songs would have made them more elegaic and graceful than they already were. "Cathedral" might have been more majestic, for instance. Stills dominates the album, with Nash contributing his usual amount. It all adds up to a good album, but definitely the tip of the iceberg of the inevitable breakup that followed. That is what people who remembered those days will remember about this album, and that is what it stands for. It's good, but it just isn't as good as it could have been. Essential listening for all CSN fans This was the first CSN album I ever heard and it remains my favourite along with their debut. What it has in common with that record is that Graham Nash's contributions stand right up there along side those of Stills and Crosby. His song Cathedral is a masterpiece but there isn't a bad track on the album. Buy it! Submitted by Colin (Lancaster, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
