Personnel: Daniel Johnston (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul Leary (guitar, bass); Regina Carter (violin); John Hagen (cello); Bobbie Nelson (piano); Sandy Smallens (bass); King Coffey (drums). Daniel Johnston's major-label debut is, arguably, his finest moment. With considerable help from Butthole Surfer Paul Leary, Johnston has never sounded so self-assured or confident before. Some of the songs are more polished, but they're never slicked up to such a degree that this sounds like a user-friendly approximation of Johnston's style; in fact, there are plenty of tracks that return Johnston to the keyboards ("Delusion & Confusion" and "My Little Girl") for his freewheeling, primitive workouts. Exhibiting some of his strongest songwriting to date, Fun is a rewarding record that never loses its initial, visceral appeal. ~ John Dougan To the surprise of nearly everyone who had followed his career, Daniel Johnston was signed to Atlantic Records, which released FUN in 1994. Produced by Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers, the album is a perfect presentation of Johnston's music. He evolved from primitive self-recording, to working in a true recording studio, to finally finding a sympathetic and appropriate producer in Leary. The first three songs alone show the wonderful range of this collection. "Love Wheel" is propelled by an incessantly rocking combo, "Life in Vain" is gorgeously embellished with a rich string trio, and "Crazy Love" finds Johnston alone at a Fender Rhodes piano, singing about one of his favorite subjects. Leary had the good sense to recognize the core strengths of Johnston's powerful songwriting and he let nothing get in the way. FUN is both well-produced and directly honest. This is the Daniel Johnston album to start with.
Rolling Stone (12/29/94-1/12/95, p.176) - "...Recalling the spirit of the prelapsarian Pee-Wee Herman, it's an aural dada playhouse wherein `Kool-Aid flows like wine'....Johnson and his motley playmates...are the cat's pajamas in some surreal cartoons." Spin (10/94, p.112) - Highly Recommended - "...it's good to hear Johnston backed by Paul Leary on FUN....Scrapping the lo-fi aesthetic, [Leary] finds the hooks that Johnston's technical limits had hidden..." Entertainment Weekly (10/7/94, p.76) - "...Thankfully, his eccentricities--spare production, wavering pitch, erratic phrasing--have made the major-label transfer practically intact, only better recorded..." - Rating: B+ Musician (11/94, p.92) - "...He tugs at your sleeve with such intensity that you figure he must be onto something even though half the time you can barely make the message out..." Daniel Johnston Fun Songs Fun Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) GLOSSY VERSION OF DAN IF HIS LO-FI (early) STUFF IS HARD FOR SOMEONE TO GET INTO . THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START . THIS IS GREAT STUFF AND I WOULD PUT IT UP THERE WITH LENNON OR DYLAN . BEING A FAN I LOVE HIS LO-FI RECORDINGS BETTER . BUT EVERYONE THAT I PLAYED THIS FOR WANTED A COPY . SO THAT SPEAKS FOR IT'S IMPORTANTS . I BELIEVE (SO FAR) THIS WAS HIS LAST ALBUM OF HIS I REALLY ENJOYED . AND I USUALLY PLAY IT OFF AND ON EVERY YEAR SINCE IT'S RELEASE . Daniel Johnston FUN collaboration Daniel Johnston's 1994 collaberation with Paul Leary in the album "FUN" is way too often overlooked among Daniel Johnston's works. Leary does a great job of producing Daniel's songs, preserving in full the musical "idea" and Daniel's reknown "genuineness". When I finally located it, I listened to nothing else for several weeks! You'll love it. Submitted by jd10000 (Houston, Tx,, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Soul. I really like this album, when you listen this music, you understand that this is "really" music, you close yours eyes and your heart go fast, you are on a trip between dreams and ilusions. $11.89 Personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals); Dez Cadena (guitar, background vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Charles Dukowski (bass); Robo (drums). Personnel: Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar); Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Robo (drums). Photographer: Ed Colver. Perhaps the best album to emerge from the quagmire that was early-'80s California hardcore punk, the visceral, intensely physical presence of Damaged has yet to be equaled, although many bands have tried. Although Black Flag had been recording for three years prior to this release, the fact that Henry Rollins was now their lead singer made all the difference. His furious bellow and barely contained ferocity was ...

Additional personnel: Michelle Anderson (Uilleann pipes); Marisa Bissinger (saxophone, flugelhorn); Rick Benejamin (trombone); Laura Carter (zanzithophone); Robert Schneider (piano, organ, bass, background vocals). Perhaps best likened to a marching band on an acid trip, Neutral Milk Hotel's second album is another quixotic sonic parade; lo-fi yet lush, impenetrable yet wholly accessible, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is either the work of a genius or an ...

Unknown Contributor Roles: Dan Toohey; Don Thrasher; Jim Pollard; Kevin Fennell; Greg Demos. The cult of indie rock thrives on the unexpected discovery, and in 1994 Guided by Voices was just the sort of musical phenomenon no one figured was still out there -- 30-something rock obsessives cranking out fractured ...

Additional personnel: Wayne Rhino Flower (guitar, bass); John McMahon, Gretchen Yanover (cello); Eric Akre (percussion); Chad Shaver. Recorded in May and June 1994. Beneath the wacky guitar fooling and somewhat nasal vocals, Built to Spill write great love songs, whether its bouncy pop or fragile melodies.
