Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals, guitar, harp); Steve Howe (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Rick wakeman (piano, organ, keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals); Alan White (drums, percussion). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Montreux, Switzerland; Saint Martins Church, Vevey, Switzerland and Advision Studios, London, England between 1976 & 1977. Originally released on Atlantic (19106). Going for the One is perhaps the most overlooked item in the Yes catalog. It marked Rick Wakeman's return to the band after a three-year absence, and also a return to shorter song forms after the experimentalism of Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Relayer. In many ways, this disc could be seen as the follow-up to Fragile. Its five tracks still retain mystical, abstract lyrical images, and the music is grand and melodic, the vocal harmonies perfectly balanced by the stinging guitar work of Steve Howe, Wakeman's keyboards, and the solid rhythms of Alan White and Chris Squire. The title track features Howe on steel guitar (he's the only prog rocker who bothers with the instrument). "Turn of the Century" and the album's single, "Wonderous Stories," are lovely ballads the way only Yes can do them. "Parallels" is the album's big, pompous song, so well done that in later years the band opened concerts with it. Wakeman's stately church organ, recorded at St. Martin's Church, Vevey, Switzerland, sets the tone for this "Roundabout"-ish track. The concluding "Awaken" is the album's nod to the extended suite. Again, the lyrics are spacy in the extreme, but Jon Anderson and Squire are dead-on vocally, and the addition of Anderson's harp and White's tuned percussion round out this evocative track. ~ Ross Boissoneau Upon the release of 1977's GOING FOR THE ONE and its predecessor, RELAYER, the gap between albums was the longest to date for Yes. In the interim, keyboardist Patrick Moraz, who replaced Rick Wakeman, departed, and Wakeman returned to the fold. Thus re-energized, the band found its feet again and recorded the finest of their mid-period releases. While the artful ambition of RELAYER hadn't totally disappeared (this was still '70s prog rock after all), there was a new level of visceral energy and concision on the title track and "Wonderous Stories," the latter as close as Yes got to a pop single at the time. The more expansive side of the group is represented best on the epic "Awaken," a multi-hued piece that would remain a concert favorite decades later. Beautiful! "Turn of the Century" Tear Jerker
"Awaken" Jon Anderson's favorite piece of music in Yes's career. That should say enough. The whole album is enough to make anyone realize what music really is. I'll back Anderson up; "Awaken" is the best piece by Yes. So emotional! Submitted by mharden12 (Cincinnati, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Great Lost Yes Album I remember getting the vinyl copy of this album upon its release and then totally immersing myself in it, then saw the tour. Wow! Steve Howe was my hero--
That was a forgotten memory until last month when I got the remastered CD. And I've immersed myself in it again. Wow, the whole band is my hero! All five songs are so different, so energetically played, and so creative--I'm sorry, but I don't know of many--if any--bands currently around that will play and solo with the synergy that these guys did. Where have all the solos gone in todays rock?
The reason this didn't get 5 stars is sound--even remastered the sound is dense and not as clear and defined as it could be-- maybe that's why its so good--
Highly recommended

Yes returns in a big way After a three year hiatus from the studio, Wakeman and Anderson patched things up and recorded one of the great progressive rock albums of the decade in "Going For The One". We get to see the many facets of Yes' repertoire in this "Whitan Sampler" of their many talents. The volume begins with the mainstream-esque title track; a scorching, swirling number that will no doubt get you out of the chair and dancing around. Next up, "Turn of the Century" - an acustic-dominated throwback to the Yes days of yore only with a very fresh and seamless touch. The work contiues with "Parallels", a song written by Chris Squire which melds a sweet bosanova with a little hint of political savvy (why can't we all get along?). Continuing, Anderson get his two cents (pence?) in with the beautiful "Wonderous Stories", a track featuring Howe's trademark versitility as he plays the vachalia to drive this gem along. The album winds up with the cosmic "Awaken", a 15-minute Yes classic where everybody gets into the act. "Awaken" displays the band's strengths with its smoothly changing tempos and intricate melodies where every note has been carefully plotted and expertly placed. This collection of works may be Yes' finest to date; it contains the philosophical lyrics and attention to detail that made the group famous as well as a healthy dose of musical progression. For those looking to build a collection of this band's material, "Going For The One" surely takes its rightful place with the Yes flagships "Fragile" and "Close To The Edge" - be sure to include it! Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England. Originally released on Atlantic (19202). The '70s model of Yes runs out of gas. Recorded in a morale slump and an impending haze of drink, Tormato's decent tunes are sabotaged by Rick Wakeman's increasing penchant for cheesy textures and the band's thin overall sound. Going For The One
$22.79 A release flowing from the tide of The Nu-Asian Underground, a "reflection" of current electronic music. Influenced heavily by the sounds of the Mid-East, a wide range of tempos are represented on this 12 track piece. Resident DJ at the famed Anokha Club in London and a long term collaborator with TALVIN SINGH, the producer/artist melds techno, dub and trance with ancient middle eastern chants, live percussive and melodic instruments. Tones are fortified with reverb, chants of brilliant male and female vocals are looped around spacey tones that conjure visions of flares in the night sky or flowers blooming at super speed during a time-elapsed film. The artist appears on ORIENTATION with the track "Connection" on Poets Club Records. The sampler captures the essence of Nu-Asian music, a style that originated in London and contains sounds from India mix with ...
