Foxtrot is where Genesis began to pull all of its varied inspirations into a cohesive sound -- which doesn't necessarily mean that the album is streamlined, for this is a group that always was grandiose even when they were cohesive, or even when they rocked, which they truly do for the first time here. Indeed, the startling thing about the opening "Watcher of the Skies" is that it's the first time that Genesis attacked like a rock band, playing with a visceral power. There's might and majesty here, and it, along with "Get 'Em Out by Friday," is the truest sign that Genesis has grown muscle without abandoning the whimsy. Certainly, they've rarely sounded as fantastical or odd as they do on the epic 22-minute closer "Supper's Ready," a nearly side-long suite that remains one of the group's signature moments. It ebbs, flows, teases, and taunts, see-sawing between coiled instrumental attacks and delicate pastoral fairy tales. If Peter Gabriel remained a rather inscrutable lyricist, his gift for imagery is abundant, as there are passages throughout the album that are hauntingly evocative in their precious prose. But what impresses most about Foxtrot is how that precociousness is delivered with pure musical force. This is the rare art-rock album that excels at both the art and the rock, and it's a pinnacle of the genre (and decade) because of it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Easily the most angular and eccentric Genesis album, FOXTROT is where Peter Gabriel's idiosyncratic lyricism bears full fruit. "Get 'em Out By Friday" and "Watcher of the Skies" brim with Gabriel's quirky combination of poetics, politics, and philosophy, and with the tricky time signatures and instrumental flights that are early-Genesis trademarks.
Though these are some of the most powerful, memorable songs in the Genesis catalog, FOXTROT's centerpiece is the 23-minute epic "Supper's Ready," a prog-rock classic that moves through several sections, shifting tempo, mood, and tone colors as it weaves its rich, complex tale. This composition would become Genesis diehards' most beloved tune, known as a concert favorite for years. SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND may be the definitive Genesis album, but FOXTROT runs a close second, and is just as much of a gem in the '70s progressive rock crown.Spin (01/04, p.48) - "...This album established Peter Gabriel as something of a prog neorealist. Thom Yorke would carry the torch..."
Q (12/94, p.162) - 3 Stars - Good - "...`Supper's Ready,' the 20-odd minute suite that occupied all of Side Two, looks worrying on paper but still holds up rather well, chiefly because it's a well-made collection of short episodes rather than a vast swathe of noodling..."
Mojo (Publisher) (3/01, p.82) - "...[Their] breakthrough album....dominated by 'Supper's Ready', which finds Gabriel managing to sound soulful while singing such lines as 'A young figure sits by the pool/He's been stamped 'Human Bacon' by some butchery tool'..."

5 stars The explosion
At this point in Genesis' growth, the group had made a couple of trippy, mildly psychedelic albums in somewhat an extremely weak "Moody Blues"-esque vein, that were passed over by the public for a good reason. Here on this album, they exploded on songs that rocked hard and spoke messages that were even grittier, while maintaining a flair and a self-contained sense that is impossible to ignore no matter how you look at it. The songs are great, and the album as a whole is everywhere and nowhere. It is great, and it will grow on you if you let it. This shows that Phil Collins could work with others in a group without taking it over, and in fact, Phil only took the group over when Peter Gabriel up and left suddenly after their opus, "The Lamb Dies Down On Broadway". This album shows what Genesis were really all about, and it shows just how powerful they were as a unit. You won't forget it if you listen to it.

5 stars Genesis's "Suppers Ready" proof of God
Amazing length, musical talent, and lyrical passage. The finale progression especially, very uplifting, gives you that sensation of hope.

One of England's prime jazz-rock -- or, more accurately, rock-jazz -- outfits, most of the members of Colossuem had apprenticed in blues bands, and it shows very strongly on some of the material here. Both "The Kettle" and "Butty's Blues" are essentially tarted-up 12-bar blues, although they work well in a grander context; in the latter case much grander, as a brass ensemble enters for the last part, drowning out everything but the guitar, an indication that this recording is in dire need of remastering. "Elegy" is a fast-paced, minor-key blues that stretches guitarist James Litherland's vocal abilities. Things do get far more interesting with "The Machine Demands a Sacrifice," which offers solo opportunities to organist ...

Recording information: Crazy Beast Studio, Northeast Minneapolis; Electrical Studio, Chicago, IL; Third Ear Recording, Minneapolis, MN; Wall2Wall Recording, Chicago, IL.
Issued in 2007, ARMCHAIR APOCRYPHA marks a period of change for indie-pop vocalist/violinist Andrew Bird, as it's both his debut on the Fat Possum label and his first solo album without longtime collaborators Kevin O'Connell and Nora O'Connor. Recorded by the Chicago-based performer in Minneapolis with a cadre of local musicians, most notably multi-instrumentalist Martin Dosh, APOCRYPHA furthers Bird's inventive, genre-melding aesthetic, with the swooning "Heretics" calling to mind a folk-inclined Pavement, and the spare "Scythian Empire" blending delicately plucked violin with a warm keyboard sheen. A showcase for Bird's plaintive vocals, dynamic string lines, and utterly unique songcraft, ARMCHAIR APOCRYPHA stands out as a transitional album and, even more importantly, one of his finest outings.
With Armchair Apocrypha, Andrew Bird takes another developmental departure from his previous works, though not nearly in as drastic a fashion as his previous album-to-album jumps in style. This has become expected of Bird and is one of the merits that make each of his releases highly anticipated. Where in the past Bird has impressed listeners with his violin artistry and vocal delivery, and later his use of electronic looping and whistling, with Armchair he allows the songs to breath more on their own, using the aforementioned elements to blend into the structural integrity of the songs rather than predominately featuring each component. This is not to say his previous approaches were ineffective, but rather an observation that is one of the essential reasons Armchair Apocrypha holds together more cohesively than Bird's previous outings. ...
