Recording information: Ardent Studios, Memphis, TN (1970); Headley Grange, Hampshire, England (1970); Island Studios, London, England (1970); London, England (1970); Olympic Studios, London, England (1970). Arrangers: Robert Plant; Jimmy Page; Charles Obscure. On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping "Immigrant Song" is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, "Celebration Day" turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and "Out on the Tiles" lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. "Gallows Pole" updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is an infectious acoustic romp, while "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of "Hats off to (Roy) Harper" actually outstrips the epic "Since I've Been Loving You," which is the only time Zeppelin sound a bit set in their ways. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine LED ZEPPELIN III is the sound of rock's brash enfants terrible beginning to mature. While the take-no-prisoners blues-rock of the first two albums is still prominent in the band's tool box, other implements are beginning to appear. The delicate acoustic whispers that would run through much of ZEPPELIN IV have their folk/blues antecedents here (the lambent "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp"), the results of the band's creative encampment in a woodland dwelling. At the same time, the heavier tracks are unprecedented in their ferocious swagger. Robert Plant's bone-chilling battle cry and the band's savage riffing on "The Immigrant Song" do full justice to the song's Viking imagery, and it's easy to believe that the "hammer of the gods" Plant sings about is being swung straight in your direction.
Rolling Stone (11/26/70, p.34) - "...their music is as ephemeral as Marvel Comics, and as vivid as an old Technicolor cartoon....Their albums refine the crude public tools of all dull white blues bands into something awesome..." -Lester Bangs Q (11/94, p.143) - 5 Stars - "...Zeppelin were spinning around like a carousel...from the crunchy riff anthems ('Immigrant Song') to blues rollercoasters ('Since I've Been Loving You') to tail-shaking boogie ('Out On The Tiles')..." Led Zeppelin III Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Probally their very best. Great acoustic songs. Really shows Jimmy Page's amazingness. Submitted by ChrisMoulton6 (Sarasota, Fl, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Eclectic and versatile I absolutely love this album although it's unlike any of Led Zeppelin's others. This one rocks hard with tracks like "Immigrant Song" and "Out on the tiles", but it also has some great folk tracks like "Gallows Pole" and "Bron yr aur stomp". Then there's some of the finest blues I've ever heard in "Since I've been loving you" (an unmitigated masterpiece!) and "Hats off to Roy Harper" - which is so very, very good and authentic sounding that you'd swear that Page and Plant had managed to summon the souls of Robert Johnson and Elmore James together in order to write and perform this one! What's so very good about "Led Zeppelin 3" is it's a perfect mix of light and shade - it has melodic and folk numbers, it has hard rock, and it also has blues that sends shivers down your spine. In one word, it's 'phenomenal'! Submitted by James Richardson (Elizabeth, South Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Three is sweet... Easily, the boys' best release. From the 2 power chords on the ramp before the vocals kick in on "Immigrant Song", to Bonham's steady "tin-can" percussion on "Gallows Pole"...This is the true LZ
fan's tastiest "din-din"...Be sure & try the "Tangerine" for dessert...& as a night-cap, probably the best blues track they EVER recorded, "Since I've been loving you"...As has been already stated in other reviews..."3" ages like a fine Merlot...Mega shelf-life...Betcha' it becomes one of your favorites, too. Spectacularly Good The best selling successive string of albums in history are Led Zeppelin's first six masterpiece albums. The lowest selling of these six great albums is LZ-III, having sold 6-million copies(tremendous for most artists but mediocre sales for Zeppelin). Initially confusing or flying over the heads of most fans, this brilliant album has steadily gained in stature with the passage of time. All of Zep's music has aged exceptionally well, but none better than this album. This is the one that shocks and converts more doubters than any other. If you are not familiar with this entire album then you don't really understand the variety and depth of Zeppelin's music. It's probably my favorite album of all time, bar none. I recommend it highly, and promise you will not be disappointed. Submitted by bobby.mick (Shreveport, La.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.45 Personnel: Shannon McNally (vocals, guitar); Shannon McNally; Dave Easley, Dave F. Easley (guitar, background vocals); David Stocker, David Stocker (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Sam Price (bass instrument, background vocals); Wallace Lester, Wallace Lester (drums); Sean Staples (mandolin). Audio Mixer: Jared Tuten. Recording information: 07/13/2005/07/14/2005. Photographer: Justine Szymala. New York singer-songwriter Shannon McNally moved to New Orleans in 2003 to seek her musical fortune, and her 2005 studio album GERONIMO was the result. This live set features songs from that release, as well as from her previous JUKEBOX SPARROWS album and her BOLDER THAN PARADISE EP. McNally's strong, supple voice and evocative songs come over well against a workmanlike musical background that translates GERONIMO's lush production into more prosaic bar-band terms. McNally's solo song "Leave Your Bags By the Door" and the stately, melancholy country of "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" are both highlights, while the Native American salute of "Geronimo" is a suitably emotional finale.
